Point is IT components are priced in dollars. 52% voted for a 20% price increase. Most corporations wanted it the other way. You. Plus the increasing demand for SSD in place of spinning rust is tightening prices in the short term. In the medium term prices will fall (in dollars).

There are some things that must be said, it's Hot UK folk lore: Tardis jokes, Henry the vacuum cleaner snorting coke and posting pictures of scantily clad ladies in underwear where appropriate. I don't make up these rules, they're in the *terms and conditions that we all agreed to when signing up (you did read them before agreeing I assume?)

Anyhoo, Happy New and here's looking forward to a lower cost 2014

*terms and conditions may not explicitly state these rules

We're talking about flash memory though which bar a huge crisis, should be getting cheaper over time, especially two years.

Apply the same to laptops for example, which tend to follow a similar trajectory. Wonder what the response would be to a two year old laptop, that's still the same price.

Yes it has the drive you mentioned. Just looking ahead & also saw the "mini USB" drives & as I have no use for the DVD additional cheap storage would be good. I think my DVD is fixed so I assume I would be limited to SD or USB but nay just wait and see how I get on with current storage.

OK so now I have been less patient & checked the link it's an internal SATA drive so similar question does anybody know if I can remove the DVD drive and replace with this or any other drive on an HP Pavilion 15-au110na

31 Dec 16 #65
You'd normally replace your existing hard drive with this SSD drive.,,, a simple swap in most cases. If you did need a second hard drive (use a larger non SSD for storage) then you could use an adaptor that replaces a laptop DVD drive and allows a second hard drive to be fitted : Example

EDIT: that laptop you list already has an SSD drive in it, 256 GB M.2 SSD... do you need another SSD drive?

31 Dec 16 #63
Might be a dumb question but will this fit into a new HP laptop which has a "multi-format SD media card reader" slot fitted ?
exact model is Pavilion 15-au110na

The point is that the USD has risen against virtually all other currencies, save the Swiss Franc, in the past 6 months. The USD is on a tear. The price of gold, which saw a huge rally in the first 6 months of 2016 has collapsed since July when the USD began soaring against virtually every currency on the planet.

Markets are also beginning to price in the collapse of the Euro in 2017 - which will result in the USD being even stronger - so enough of this blame everything wrong in the Universe on the BREXIT vote cr*p now please.

Agreed. About a year and a half ago I was waiting around for the price of this drive to drop to around 45 quid. I would often see it around this price and ignore it because I knew that it had gone for less than 45 quid prior.

£66.42 a year and a half on is ridiculous. It should be about 30 quid.

You can see that it was 47.99 quid on Amazon in November 2015 when I bought it. Must have been less than 45 elsewhere. The point is, look what the price has been since.

To put it into perspective a couple of days ago they wanted amost 75 quid for a drive that cost 80 quid in 2014....

https://www.extremetech.com/computing/240531-ssd-pricewatch-ssd-prices-expected-jump-quarter-thanks-limited-nand-supply-surging-demand

I feel its a mix between shortages and the referendum. But as someone who voted to stay - it is becoming a bore to hear over and over the exit is the source of all our problems. They'll come back down in a few months once supply catches up I'm sure.

Honestly there are very few games that benefit from an SSD. The only one I've come across is Sims 3 which can turn a 20 minute load into a 5 minute one. However that is very extreme. I find just having your OS on a different drive to the one you store data on sees the biggest benefit. Specifically for me Payday 2 would often crash and black screen - once i moved it to a different spinner it didn't happen once.

Of course SSD's are beneficial, but 960gb is overkill unless you have specific needs, such as silence for a small media PC or video editing.

HertzVanRental to Sheepiestar
31 Dec 16 #49
No as it just fits into the same connections that your old drive fitted in; assuming it is the same physical size drive. You will need an disk drive enclosure though to enable you to connect the SSD to the laptop and clone the old hard drive. They're only a few £ on Amazon and can be then used to give you an external HDD that you can use with your old drive in.

Hope that helps.

I perfectly understand where your coming from and again as people who have replied to you have said we have to consider the currency valuation correction following the referendum. We were always told that based upon Moore's Laws stuff should get faster and hence cheaper.

In regards to your price comment I think you are correct it should be cheaper but as somebody else posted supply issues could be effecting the market. I attach below a graph of an 850 EVO 250GB, something definitely happened to supply around a year ago before the referendum effect kicked in.

Would this be suitable to replace a hard drive in a mid 2009 intel core duo MacBook Pro ?
HertzVanRental to Sheepiestar
31 Dec 16 1 #42
Yes. I upgraded my 2009 Macbook Pro a number of years ago with a 128GB SSD and it's so much faster than my iMac which was one of the last ones with an HDD; it's quite a difficult mod on an iMac, but easy on the Macbook Pro version you've got.

I also took out the optical drive and replaced it with a cheap 1TB HDD and the SSD runs the operating software and the HDD is just used for data storage/music/photos - I got the necessary enclosure case for the HDD from eBay and use the optical drive, placed in another case from eBay, now as an external unit. Well worthwhile upgrade and can't see me changing it for some time to come.

I upgraded my laptop from an HDD to an SSD the other day and it was easy. I didn't need the Windows 10 key. I just bought a cheap hard drive enclosure and then used free cloning software Macrium Reflect - very simple to use.

I did a very approximate performance comparison as follows:

Time taken to open a word document from start-up with HDD: 1 minute 24 secs.
Time taken to open a word document from start-up with SSD: 26 secs.

Performance difference is incredible and feels like a new machine that won't now go into the bin!

A good reason to retain your HDD either in a second bay - or failing that bunging it an external enclosure. I keep a copy of the SSD in a partition on it - so in the event of failure I can still boot the machine. Also HDDs tend to die slowly giving warning signs so you can swop ahead of the catastrophe. SSD can die without warning and forensically recovering lost data is much more difficult.

But then oldies will remember when HDDs ran on a wing and a prayer. Its now a mature product as good as it will ever be. SSDs are still improving in leaps and bounds.

No my little buttercup you seem confused. You have not considered the supply/demand trends, strength of the pound comparative to the US dollar, emerging markets, faults in production leading to recalls, natural hazards affecting production, availability of raw materials used in production, increase demand over holiday season. The idea that ALL products get cheaper over time and stay cheap is at best KeyStage Three Geography. You have also failed to take into account what the consumer is willing to spend, how the prices compare to other vendors and finally by having a quick peak at the heat at the top of the screen will show what people think of the price. The price could go higher in the next few months because of the factors above, who knows.

Shut the door on the way out, there's a good chap.

SSDs are great for speeding up the OS and apps. Less so for data. If your HDD is fast enough to deliver video than the SDD will only be called on to deliver data at the same speed. Hence if its a desktop it is sensible to retain the old spinning iron for data (for free!) and use a small SSD for the OS/Apps. Actually for most people a 120Gb SSD is sufficient for that.

If its a laptop with only one drive bay then you have to decide where to keep your data. Cloud, SDHC, NAS ... there are many off-device options especially for data that is accessed only occasionally. Just think through how you use your storage. Everybody's needs are different.

You forgot that nvme ssds have typically 3x faster iops

The difference between this drive and a 850 evo will be the iops and the cache which is pretty large on the 850 evo (12gb) - other drives typically have smaller caches and degrade more so when its full.

Honestly, i feel most of the increase is tied with flash shortages due to the various disasters faced over in Asia recently, in addition to vastly increased demand by businesses for flash storage, rather than politically. It does apply somewhat - but in this case I don't feel thats the main factor.

SaleChaser to MrKillChill

At the end of the day the difference between this and a 850 evo is minimal. The only time there is a major difference is between a traditional Sata SSD with the average 500MB/s read and write speeds against a NVME SSD where speeds can exceed up to 3GB/s read and 2GB/ write.
