I fix laptops for a living and the old x55dc asus was a shockingly flimsy laptop, you could actually twist and bend it and the touchpads aren't great... although that was the old models, maybe they're better built now

Is the battery life only 4 hours? Was about to hit the button but that might be a deal breaker for me. What's the battery life on the Dell mentioned?

hi there, have you got links for those 2 laptops you mentioned? cheers  ...also...
..
on that intel comparison site, why is the quad alot cheaper than the dual, when the hq procesor is alot faster than the U model, and better specs overall/more up to date etc.. ..weird no?

20 Dec 16#30
1. It's a dual core, don't get hung up on the fact that the branding is i7 as if it had been a quad core the price would be noticeably higher.
2. The reseller only offering a 3 month warranty of their own will keep the price down a bit. I doubt it makes much difference to the price but a bigger one to peace of mind maybe!

Yes I know but then my point is 'why not a quad-core i7'. It's just a weird mix of parts, it's good value for what it is but I reckon it'll draw less well informed buyers in based on the marketing names and numbers and in reality without an SSD it would be largely infuriating. And back to my other note - the Dell machines are better balanced, in fact Dell is normally very good at having all components complement each other and nothing outwardly mismatched. The short Asus warranty doesn't instil confidence - it may work fine for years but then why not give longer?

You can do transcoding with the encoder in an iGPU as well.
I didn't take issue with Intel's mobile branding but now that you can get quad core mobile i5s alongside dual core with HT i7s as well as quad core with HT i7s it is starting to get a bit confusing.
This does seem like a weird mix of parts that marketing cooked up but it's still fairly good value for what you get albeit being a refurb with a limited warranty which takes the shine off the deal.

Yes, that was the usage case I expected but this laptop has a dual-core i7 not the quad (which I honestly think ought to be named an i5) and then if you're doing that kind of stuff you've suggested, I'd imagine a bit of GPU transcode which is why the cynic in me can't help seeing this laptop as choosing marketing names and numbers over real-world use (like massive hard disk storage but no SSD, no GPU but i7 CPU, more RAM than normal, etc.) - I suppose at least they have included an FHD display.
And FWIW, I'd choose the Dell options provided over this Asus, the Dells are more balanced machines with proper warranties as well.

Great.. discussion can only keep going.. People will be the judge of it and their specific needs.
There are audience for everything that there is for sale in the market.

The i5 is a quad core (2.6 – 3.5) v your i7 which is dual core with HT (2.5 – 3.1): https://ark.intel.com/compare/88194,88962
As you can see from that link the £100 difference in price is more than covered by the upgraded CPU.
It also comes with Radeon graphics but not sure how that compares with the Intel integrated but as the i7 has only 15W for the CPU + GPU and the Dell has 35W for the CPU alone plus whatever the Radeon requires I expect the Dell is a lot more accomplished.
No doubt there is a niche audience for a laptop like this with lots of RAM, a large HDD and a dual core CPU and they will be delighted by it as the price is very good for what it is just not worth what you suggested it is.

As I stated above the price seems fine just not worth a grand with the addition of a £100 SSD.

Not getting carried away at all, again if you can kindly provide one deal with similar or better specs for about £550 I will take this deal off at that very minute.
Can only agree with warranty part only.. everything else is below par with considerably more money being splashed

Do people frequently need lots of processing power in the CPU but no real graphics, is that a common requirement? Asking seriously as normally I would expect a high-end CPU to be paired with at least a moderate GPU.

Discrete GPU is for gaming, visual content creation and in some cases video transcoding/encoding although CPUs tend to do a better job at that due to more flexibility.
Quad core CPU is for video transcoding/encoding, music creation, heavy multi-tasking, visual content creation, running VMs etc.
So there are more tasks that can utilise a quad core CPU but don't require a discrete GPU than benefit from a dGPU alone but many gamers seem blind to this.

Woa boy, you've changed the goal posts there as I only referred to your claim that it's worth a grand plus by adding a £100 SSD; which it isn't even it is was new and with a full warranty which it isn't.
The price seems fine to me after a short perusal but don't get carried away.

Much appreciate your comment but rather then proving me wrong, kindle prove yourself right by giving some example machines which provide all included specs plus 512gb ssd for £553.10 (437.98 + 115.12)
Thanks again

The CPU is equivalent to a 7th generation i5, integrated graphics, slow hard drive, so how exactly is this worth over a grand just buy adding a hundred quid SSD?

Three months warranty is indeed low and I completely agree
Also nobody mentioned of HDD being 5400 rpm which is painfully slow.
Yet this deal provides too much compared to the money being paid for it.
I am personally planning to stick crucial 525gb ssd (Amazon for £115.12) which makes this laptops in league of monsters that cost £1000+
Hope it helps someone.

Recently bought a Zenbook UX305CA from here as a refurbished product. It was in amazing condition not even a fingerprint on it. Although there's only a 3 month warranty I feel confident the item is essentially new (return/restocked)
