I know people hate the "Was" Or "this time ago" but I got this new 2 years ago for £200 with Mario kart 8 and a download game with 2 years warranty at Tesco.

I can't understand why people would think £150 for it second hand is acceptable for the time and age of it, especially when it'll treated like the next Sega Dreamcast in 2017

Please wait till the Switch comes out before considering getting one

PS, my opinion (To prevent Triggers)

After the actual Switch reveal a couple of days ago, this seems way more attractive now considering this will also have the new Zelda game.

Both suffered poor 3rd party support mainly because Sony (and now Sony & Microsoft) wooed them all to produce their big releases to their platforms, and Nintendo & Sega either couldnt or didnt try hard enough to win them back.

I'm a Sega & Nintendo fan but can see quite simply had Sega managed to get releases companies including Konami & Rockstar to bring titles such as GTA3, Metal Gear Solid to the dreamcast and provided the easy development tools & incentives Sony did then the Dreamcast could have been more successful, it's hardware was capable although the GD Rom was limited in capacity, the system prone piracy both also unattractive to developers.

The Wii U - is as system as a fan of Nintendo I wanted to buy into but it was (and still is) overpriced for what it is, it relies mainly on 1st party releases which whilst good are an expensive price of entry and having felt the same with the Wii which I did buy unfortunately WiiU will need to be sub £100 before I start collecting the Nintendo gems - both PS3 & Xbox 360 were more powerful and also now considerably cheaper - the last generation changed the landscape as now big releases are on both platforms with very few exclusives (unfortunately).

Hopefully Nintendo will manage to resolve some of this with the Switch, they need to provide good easy current generation - cross platform development tools, reasonable prices & return to developers and perhaps most importantly sell a lot to make it a viable platform for releases - of course a lot of that will depend on price and availability - doing the typical Nintendo 'thing' of not having enough to satisfy demand worked in the 90's to keep prices high but for a company now not the market leader it's not the right approach.

I don't care anymore tbh.

I was probably 7 when it came out, so it's probably one of them consoles you had to have to understand. I'm just using the Internet on how it failed, at the time all I knew was Sonic adventure and Crazy Taxi.

I think using GD discs that can only hold 1GB would been questioning the developers who wanted to make games for other consoles that had 4.70gb (DVD single layer) to use.

probably why the Dreamcast had lots of Arcade ports due to them not needing much memory.

No way GTA 3 would been on if it survived.

again Dreamcast & Wii U failed for completely different reasons.
Dreamcast was actually a very capable machine with great specs and fantastic games, when it launched it was the top dog.it failed simply because PS2 was exceptional and was successor to the mighty PS1 so there was so much hype and good karma.

whereas Dreamcast was successor to the Saturn another failed console and carried it's bad karma.

Wii U on the other hand was too late, had weak outdated hardware (so no third party support) and wanted to force the gimmicky tablet scheme (failed miserably).

Dreamcast had tons of third party support,Capcom,SNK and EA,...all supported it.
It failed because no fault of it's own mainly being unlucky and it was infact ahead of it's time.(first console tvat allowed online play).

Wii U though, failed because it was a poorly designed, outdated console which led to lack of third party support.it jad many issues and Nintendo were responsible for all the issues.

I've never mentioned it spec and power. but apparently the Dreamcast didn't market it well and it still used cd's (old tech), not many liked the controller and had lack of third party support. Oh and EA were evil to them also, doesn't sound that different to me personally.

EeEverything was wrong with the Wii U..out-dated hardware, relying on gimmick (tablet controller which was based on popularity of tablets at the time but failed),the name, miserable marketing, pricing and more.
Dreamcast on the other hand, was very advanced for it's time and had probably the best launch lineup.it only failed due to launch of the mighty PS2.
So,nothing really similar between Dreamcast and Wii U except they both failed.

When I bought my Wii U a few years ago it had Super Mario 3D world, Pikmin 3 and Bayonetta 2/Mario kart 8 on the verge of release. That's your lot and it was worth the outlay. Xbox One in comparison has one game so far that I want to play (forza horizons 3). You literally compared it to the worst console that has ever been released (in my 25 years of gaming anyway). I usually buy every console at some point but at this rate Xbox one might be the first one I skip.

I wont vote either way on this, i don't think it's a good deal, however considering the price of new Wii U's these day's its the cheapest you will get a Wii U for.

For some perspective last year for around 6 months you could get a new Wii U with Mario Kart 8 for £140 from Smyths Toys (its worth owning for Mario Kart 8 alone)

As for the console its self, on paper the Wii U failed, however I purchased one and have really enjoyed it. The Wii U has a lot of fun local multiplayer games you can get 4 people around the TV and one on the gamepad enjoying. The Xbox One and PS4 just don't have local multiplayer games, most games require each person to have their own console, tv, copy of the game and subscription to play online.

Comparing the Wii U to the Xbox One and PS4 is like comparing apples to oranges, however as a long time Xbox owner I have to be honest it's surprised me just how much i've enjoyed the Wii U.

The wii u had an appalling spec for its time but don't understand the wait for Switch comments. The wii u has its own excellent library of games and full compatibility of wii software which now has high quality hdmi output. That's 2 good libraries of software to enjoy on a modern television. The Switch hasn't even launched and will take time to build up a library of software and is cartridge based that will keep game prices higher for longer.

There's still a huge number of good reasons to own both wii u and Switch when it comes out.

Unfortunately Nintendo were not motivated to reduce price of wii u because they couldn't manufacture any more chips except at very high costs so they just managed existing inventory of chips so they would last until the new console. The wii u was a commercial failure so they were not motivated to redesign the model to use different components when sales would have been low anyway. End result wii u was more of a niche product and there was absolutely no reason to discount when discounting would only lead to higher demand which they couldn't fulfil.

7 Dec 16 1 #131
I agree it's not really worth the £150 as pre-owned now - but brand 'NEVER' worth it new?
For the Nintendo games alone it's been a fantastic console for my kids (and me), co-op games on Super Mario 3D world, Smash Brothers, Mario maker, Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Splatoon, Donkey Kong, Paper Mario and even for the odd port/revamp like Windwaker. It's easily had over 300 hours of play on it so well past the £1/hour entertainment value mark. The other 3 party games sometimes really were poor in comparison to Xbox/PS but we didn't buy one for those. Overall still very happy with ours and gets a lot of regular use.

For this actual deal - price wise - I'd wait. They will come down even more in the New Year.

1. It was a rhetorical and slightly sarcastic comment on my part. I thought that was obvious, hence me referring to time wasters on gumtree, but no contradiction anyway as you are reading it literally.
2. 1000 'heaters' disagree with you.
3. Of course you can say something 2nd hand is "hot". It is the difference in price between the 2nd hand price and the RRP price that will judge it hot or cold. It won't automatically get heat just because it is 2nd hand and therefore cheaper.

If you are not happy about 2nd hand items being posted on HUKD, you will have to take that up with the HUKD team really.
djaydearz
7 Dec 16 #122
you have contradicted yourself there. Gumtree not having time wasters is a good thing (or did you mean gumtree does have time wasters?) anyway never had an issue buying or selling off gumtree

secondly you cant state something being second hand is hot because its cheaper than brand new....of course it will be cheaper.

its like saying buying a 4 year old second hand car is HOT DEAL compared to buying it brand new

I do agree with most of the comments that £150 is way too expensive, but too some this could be a steal as it could provide many hours of fun, for me I've had my wii u for about 6 months or so and I managed to pick mine up for £100 second hand and it was mint!

I've also got an Xbox one with a big catalogue of games and I must say I've had more fun and enjoyment out of my wii u, that's not too say I dislike my Xbox as I still play it daily, some people prefer different things!

Except there were over 100 million Wii consoles sold, compared with only 13 million Wii Us, so now that they're both out of production it will be about 10 times easier to find a second hand Wii, so it stands to reason that second hand Wii Us will maintain a higher price than the Wii - just probably not this high! £150 is expensive for a preowned one at this point, when you can get a new PS4 or Xbox One with a game or two for not much more, and I can't see them getting more valuable so I highly doubt there is an investment opportunity here.

Yep, those recent developments have certainly breathed new life into mine! There are some great games on this console, just unfortunately not enough to make it a success, but it would be well worth purchasing at second hand prices (not £150!) for the Mario games, the Zelda remasters (+ Breath of the Wild if you're not getting a Switch right away), Pikmin, Splatoon, Wonderful 101, Xenoblade, etc., plus if you're into the whole CFW it can be made to play GameCube games and injected VC titles, effectively giving you every Nintendo console so far in one!

I'm surprised it's been voted so hot. To be honest, getting a WiiU nowadays for £150 just isn't worth it. It is worth it for collectors, though.

Not going to buy this as it's just black standard. If anything, I'll try to get the Zelda Wind Waker HD Limited Edition set but if not, then whatever. In the event that the analogue stick goes nuts it can always be physically fixed too but having at least two is useful.

A WiiU by itself is only worth about £30.
Spasho
6 Dec 16 1 #87
Are you trolling? With the Dreamcast you can literally use any normal controller plugged to the console to play its games and access the settings.

How's that with the Wii U GamePad? Oh right. You can't. There are no third party Wii U GamePads anywhere.

All I can say is,I'm glad I sold my Wii U recently for £200 used.

It has a handful of great, fun games but the tablet controller was THE worst idea ever.

I hated using that thing so much that I couldn't invest more than 1-2 hours in any of those games.

I had 90% of its top tated games and felt sad and frustrated that I had to sell the console because Nintendo's stupidly of making that tablet controller mandatory for most games and the focus of the console.

Wii U failed miserably for these reasons: expensive to make tablet controller, failed concept of gimmick, outdated hardware, price, stupid name, very poor marketing.

Hope they have learned from this disaster of a console and make Swith a successful system.

Very true. Also, as gaming goes to digital only the last few remaining cartridge and disc consoles (i.e. PS5, Nintendo Switch) will be particularly valuable.

This console is pre-owned though. I would recommend buying a new one for £200 and keeping the box and inserts in pristine condition.

The Dreamcast plays perfectly as a normal console. The Wii U requires the tablet-y controller for several games to work and getting to the Settings doesn't work without it.

Hm. Considering that a new PS4 is around the same price as a used Wii u, anyone that doubts the collectability of these should take note. I get that people won't have the affection for this system that the NES & SNES can boast, but Nintendo products ALWAYS hold their value. Look at their last failed system, the Virtual Boy. This was a commercial disaster for Nintendo, but the secondary market prices have hugely increased. What's to say the same thing won't happen with the Wii U?
BTW, if anyone wants to buy one for playing and not for future scalping, it's a great system with great games, plus the fact that you can confidently turn on the system without multiple Gigs of compulsory downloads (take THAT Xbone & PS4!) is yet another plus in my eyes

Personally I would suggest holding out a few months and getting a Nintendo Switch which should be only ~ £50 more. It seems like a much more thought out machine with a lot more developers backing it. Also a very good chance that a lot of wii u games will get ported across.

I got my SNES CIB for £50 so can't complain.

6 Dec 16 1 #55
It's a strategy that keeps hardware profits fairly high but their user base fairly low so they make less money overall.
Pokemon Go majorly helped them turned them a profit this year... by adopting a new strategy (i.e. licensing games for another platform). Perfhaps they should go with the flow with the Switch... especially as the gaming tablet is a fairly easy format to copy in Android form.
bozzy
6 Dec 16 #54
....and there are full bundles going for 99 quid, opened, much like this "PRE-OWNED" deal. Even so, adjusted for inflation, the SNES would have cost you £260 new. Not exactly an investment is it?

Seems there are a lot of people defending their purchase to death with wild remarks instead of admitting It was absolute garbage out the gate and completed unsupported. Fair play to all 25 of you.

I get your point but it is an example of what is on eBay right at this moment. Just imagine what has been listed the last year or the last 10 years!
PraiseIsGone
6 Dec 16 2 #52
These are both buy-it-now prices, so really, you can't claim them to be worth that much without seeing an auction end with a bid that high. Not that I'm saying they aren't worth a good bit of money, but you get the point.

6 Dec 16 1 #49
I decided to pre-order the Switch from GameSeek for the time being, it sucks that they pre-charge but since I paid with Paypal so it's OK.

I remember someone saying about buying 2-3 Switches and then selling them on eBay could mean getting the first for free due to scarcity and people bidding like crazy.

Nintendo is gonna do that with the Switch. It's Nintendo. They did it with the Wii, Amiibos, GameCube Adapter and now the Mini NES.
Spasho
6 Dec 16 #48
Zavvi is kind of crap so don't give it too much credit. The Wind Waker HD Limited Edition 32GB pack is sold out at Amazon but they seem to get new stock if you keep an eye.

I have about £60 of Amazon vouchers which I could use to drop it down to £175 but that's still higher than expected.

I'll take my chances. Already have a WiiU CIB and the games I wanted so I'm kinda set with it.
dr_spaceman

or how about the Legend of Zelda on Game Boy for £12,999.99
dr_spaceman

Right now on eBay there is a SNES brand new in box going for £1,500. A brand new in box Super Mario All Stars game going for £1,800.

A preowned Wii U or a PS4 for the same price...
I have a Wii U and it's fun to play when I blow the dust off it but this just seems way too much, given the previous selling price and the current state of the console market.

You'd have thought that the upcoming Switch would be making the price drop.
Nintendo have always been a law unto themselves :smirk:

A brand new Wii U sealed in its box will be worth a fortune in years to come! How many of us regret getting rid of our 80's and 90's Nintendo collection?!
ShadowWarrior241
5 Dec 16 1 #41
My thoughts:

Both Base and Zavvi have run out of new stock of the Wii U. There were reports of them ending production, and it is likely true. Black Friday has been and gone without a singe Wii U deal. I think £240 was the cheapest. A few days ago the price of a pre-owned Wii U from Cex went from £148 to £165.

I highly doubt new Wii U's will head down in price. Stock will just dry up as it has started doing already. Pre-owned I do not know. PS Vita's have stayed around the £90 range and seeing as this is a home console by Nintendo, it could stay around the £100-£150 range. There does seem demand for these.

Such a great back catalogue on the Wii U. Just like the dream cast - an underrated console.

Grab a bargain when the prices come down and enjoy a great library of games

So many threads about Wii U? Is someone trying to drum up interest! Too little too late, this is only a good deal if you knock off the 1 in the price, worth no more than £49.99. It's all about the Switch now, am eagerly waiting for the wonderful Nintendo Marketing department to give us a surprise/laugh! Take your pick..

I wouldn't post this as a deal because it's used and £150, it's a good price though.

The price may seem steep when the hardware specs alone are considered, but as with a lot of Nintendo stuff, supply and demand is dictating impressive market residuals.

Wiis are dirt cheap cus they ended up shifting north of 100 million em. Wii U is looking like they're gonna finish up having shifted only 13m or there abouts. That's MUCH less than even the GameCube. And their values are hiiiiiigh!
Bikertov
5 Dec 16 2 #21
IMHO, the should be much cheaper by now.

Technology-wise it is nowhere near the Xbone or PS4, yet they are starting to approach this price now.

Errmmm the switch is estimated at £200-250 new with the general consensus that Nintendo can't go above that if they want market share (stop laughing at the back!).So unless you're a collector why would you touch WiiU with a barge pole. All the Wii U games will be remastered on switch anyway....*waits for inevitable Nintendo didn't make enough units launch*
prankster101
5 Dec 16 #18
No... Two years (maybe three). Especially as Nintendo have made it necessary for the Gamepad in order for owners to operate the machine.

Gamepads are going to be like gold-dust in years to come, and will only go up in price.

This will upset the fella that thinks the price of Wii Us will only go up...

They have loads of stock on shelves locally to me and I can see at some point some massive wii u bargains
prankster101 to joanddan7
5 Dec 16 #6
A lot of people are selling their Wii U consoles because there are no games coming out for it anymore. But those consoles will soon be finding their way into collectors hands. So yes, the value of the machine will indeed go up - but maybe not for another 2 years.
Spasho to joanddan7
5 Dec 16 2 #10
Several games on WiiU won't work properly without the GamePad so it's a good idea to buy a second one as it's cheaper than buying separately.
Spasho
5 Dec 16 1 #9
The Wii was sold like hotcakes because they were very trendy back then. WiiU on the other hand, it's a commercial failure so it's hard to say what the future holds for the Wii U's value. The games themselves are probably the one thing which will become very pricey as WiiU gamers/collectors won't sell their copies. I sure won't.

Sniper Elite V2 UKV copies are very hard to come by unless you're somehow lucky to get it cheap.
Spasho
5 Dec 16 2 #8
Price is decent but it's a used Wii U (32GB edition). I'm hoping that the Wind Waker HD Limited Edition bundle becomes available for £150 or less but don't expect it to happen as it's not too likely. Oh well. The thing that's most important are the games.
