Masterful marketing that they've somehow convinced people it's worth spending £100 on coloured light bulbs.
Do I need them? No.
Had I ever expected to spend £100 on lightbulbs in my entire life? No.
Am I tempted cus it's on HUKD? Yup.

Well worth it I got them on Black Friday from Argos for £75 and ended up getting more white bulbs for the rest of the house.really bright and turning them on and off when I'm down the pub just to annoy the wife at home makes them even better value for money.

Everyone has a particular thing they spend their cash on. For instance people who are amazed that people spend money on coloured lights probably think nothing of spending £100 on booze over a Friday/Saturday night. At least people that bought this have something to show for their money.

I honestly think most market research departments have discussion along the lines of 'how much is this worth? okay, double it'. Last I bought LED bulbs I think they were less than a tenner. Throw in a bit of kit that communicates over the mains ring and these should really be in the £50 region.
Though I get the impression Philips is seeing how much they can bleed out of LED lighting. I do like their Livingcolours [or friends of hue for wireless] mood lamps but I've only ever bought one of the Micro ones since they're so darn pricey.

There's no room for rational logical thinking here, earn more money and buy more ****, it's the only way.

Are b22 to e27 converters good with these?
How much power do they use being in an eternal standby too.

We have used the converters on ours and they work fine

Yes, works fine. I bought my Hue last week when it was on offer and most of my fittings are BC, so bought these;

What is the range with these? Could I put the hub in the house and the lights in the summerhouse (at the bottom of the garden) and control the lights from the house?
I have wifi in the summerhouse through PLC plugs.

24 Dec 161#9
if you've got wifi coverage they'll work
redduck to _RobP
24 Dec 161#17
Hue bulbs don't use wi-fi, the hub is connected through a wired connection to your internet router and then the hub connects to the bulbs via a Bluetooth connection called zigbee. no WiFi involved.

Indeed - they use zigbee - and operate on a mesh network so if the max distance was 10 meteres and you had a hub and two bulbs 10 meteres between each (20 metres from hub to last bulb) they all work

That's what I was going to say may need a bulb between as they talk to each other so pass on the requests to change. Have thought about how far my range could be too. Got a few in house now and not seen any issues

If you have PLC then I’d advise getting a hub just for your summer house using PLC > switch (outputting to both your wifi and philips hue bridge) and then they will work fine

Alexa works perfectly with Hue for me, once I setup the rooms.

25 Dec 161#48
Really? How so? Whilst I can’t get alexa to control harmony well atm there’s a new smart skill (already released in the US) coming out soon which will dramatically improve it. But until then it can do the lights perfectly - what problems have you had?
Gadgeteer
25 Dec 16#49
The smart skill for Harmony now available in UK. It works well but a pain as you have to say "Tell Harmony to" before command. I use Yonami to start activities but the Harmony skill is good for changing channels, volume, pause etc.
sh20
25 Dec 16#50
That’s not the smart skill (blue logo) it’s the standard skill (red logo). With the smart skill you don’t need to tell alexa to tell harmony. The standard skill also doesn’t add your activities etc as smart devices.
Thanks for clarification. looks like Yonami does everything the smart skill does. Still have to say Tell Harmony for anything other than activities regardless

It cans your network and sees all the scenes as devices, so I have 5 bulbs, but it shows 18 devices, because 'movie lights' shows up as a device, it's toilet. It doesn't understand the groups either, like 3 lights are set as 'front room', which it struggles with. It's embarrassing, I'm amazed they release it in when it's so unfinished
sh20 to meathane
25 Dec 16#54
I really like that it picks them up as devices as it means I can just say “turn on energise” and it will turn on the lights to that scene. Can’t think how else it would work well

Silly question but what exactly is the difference between these and regular bulbs. I understand you can control them by voice using echo etc but do they blow like a regular bulb or are they lifetime covered sort of thing?
sh20
25 Dec 16#55
Cool I’ll give it a go then. I’ve had a few hesitations though - does your phone need to be on/running the app, for the yonomi skill to work?
Gadgeteer
25 Dec 16#56
No, it's all cloud based so doesn't need phone once setup. There are a couple of exceptions that aren't cloud & need phone but Hue & Harmony are ok.
