2 years guarantee included. You pay £549 for the camera and claim back £200 from Panasonic before 09/1/2017. Cashback offer has just recently been increased from £100 to £200.

Other Panasonic cameras also qualify for the cashback offer, deal also available from other select retailers (i.e Currys/PC world, Wilkinson etc). Was looking at Amazon, but cashback not available, purchasing through them.

Seems like a great deal for £349.

Note: If your searching the internet for reviews regarding this camera, I would suggest also searching for model GX85 (Same camera, just named differently in America, as stated by brilly)

IN the market for a decent camera ---- like he idea of something a bit more portable but is something like a Canon eos1300d or eos700d SLR way better?

CameraDecision is pretty useful showing the pros and cons of two cameras against each other. Here's the DMC-GX85 (Edit - which I've been updated by brilly below is the same camera as the GX80) against the Canon EOS700D for example...

How is it and have you used SLRs before and how does it compare?
I am usually happy with a point and shoot but my wife wants a decent camera for action shots of kids doing sport and must admit using a SLR you get much crisper pics than the 150 quid point and shoot

I still have my Canon 450d thinking I might not get used to it. I needed something fast for capturing my kids and good under low light and this seems to be hitting the all right notes. I love the 4k technology too, my only gripe with it is that it's not RAW - Nevertheless, is very useful and I'm reaching for that function all the time.

I will say, its all-axle stabilization is disconcerting as it feels like there is something loose inside the casing, where in reality it's the sensor 'floating' inside the body. But saying that, you only feel that sensation when holding the camera pointing at the ground/sky axis so isn't normally noticeable. Just something to be aware of, and that it's not broken.
woldranger
25 Dec 16 #13
Looking at the Olympus M10, but this was one of the other options. The 5 axis stabilisation was one of the big selling points for the M10 for me.

They have the dual lens kit at Amazon for £489 and I thought I'd found a bargain until I noticed that Amazon are excluded. :disappointed:
SRS have it for £449 after the cashback making the second lens only an extra £100.

I saw that as-well. It's very confusing and potentially a great deal. Amazon uk was not on the eligible list on the panasonic site at the time i posted this deal. However when I checked earlier this morning it was!, but when I check 30 mins later it was gone, just check again now, and there it is again.

For action shots the A6000 will be better than the Panasonic as it has lightning fast autofocus, in fact the AF on the A6000 is probably the fastest you will get in a CFC type camera at anything like this price.
ACunningPlan
26 Dec 16 #31
Isn't the kit lens a bit soft though on the A6000? You might get fast auto-focus but the kits lens puts me off.

Look at the comparisons here :http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Panasonic_Lumix_GX80_GX85/noise.shtml

26 Dec 16 #38
Yeah I've seen that, but I'd like to buy from John Lewis if I had the choice - surely it would be easier with regards to after sales?

With regard to that, does anyone know if there's a warranty claim and you buy a kit, would you have to send in the lens too? I remember with Canon that used to be the case so I was screwed after selling the kit lens!

Is there a big difference between the 1347 (a6000) vs 662 (gx80) for low light iso?

Will it make the difference between a beautiful night shot of stars in the sky and a blury mess?

Looks like the a6000 even after two years has the better sensor but the gx80 has better features overall, especially for video.
zorbathegeek
26 Dec 16 #41
If you buy something online you're covered by distance selling regs, swings and roundabouts... don't look a gift horse in the mouth. :stuck_out_tongue:

SeanUSX
27 Dec 16 #42
This is amazing, that brings the camera down to under £300 with Panasonic cashback, Amex cashback and TopCashback. I assume there's no issue with using all three, seeing as they won't really talk to each other?
TK42
27 Dec 16 1 #43
Strangely enough you have better protection buying online than if you,d purchased in store regarding returns etc. The camera is covered directly
Panasonic for 2 years (once registered) at the moment.
woldranger
27 Dec 16 #44
But what I'm wanting to know is if you buy it with a kit lens, do you have to send the lens and body in or can you do it, body only? With my Canon a few years ago, it was in the small print that I had to send back both parts, which seemed odd
TK42
27 Dec 16 #45
I've only had to send back cameras with fixed lenses, guess it may depend on the fault, i.e. Focus or shutter issue etc.
robbino
28 Dec 16 1 #46
for those that got this camera there is a petition to get Panasonic to add LOG video profile, it would really make this camera amazing.
zorbathegeek
28 Dec 16 #47
You have to wonder whether they're saving it for the next iteration of a different model. Fuji seem to be amazing for firmware updates, then again their video is more or less an afterthought.

28 Dec 16 #48
I bought this camera a few weeks ago as thought Panasonic were not going to do the double cashback this year, a bit frustrating and have lost out on around £100. I tried to get amazon to price match with the new lightning deal they had the other day and get some credit back but the customer service is the worst ever now, no one you speak to can do anything about any problems so I would recommend buying from a place with a store.
The camera itself does feel nice and the size is good, focus quick and video stabilisation being effective. I have not done much testing though and my main problem with this camera is that the in body stabiliser rattles around a lot and the camera itself when on makes a lot of noise, like a humming and low fan noise which I find strange when you can have mobiles and tablets that run silent. In effect this sound gets picked up on the mic and in your videos, you can not bypass this an external mic as there is no mic socket.
I have been contemplating sending mine back but do really like the size and feel of the camera, just a shame about the noise makes. Does anyone else who owns this camera have the same problem?
woldranger
28 Dec 16 #49
Which lenses are you using?
metou
28 Dec 16 1 #50
I bought the twin kit but have only tried the 12-32mm which seems to give good photos and is well made, you do have to twist and unlock the the lens before use which is frustrating. My go to lens is the 20mm f1.7, I like the size, image capture in low light and indoor picture clarity.
metou
28 Dec 16 #51
I also have an Olympus 45mm f1.8 which has good on a previous Panasonic G model. Again not had this long enough to test with that lens.
woldranger
28 Dec 16 #52
I normally shoot with a 17-50 2.8 on a crop sensor Canon, with either the cheapie Canon 55-250 IS when I'm travelling or a Sigma 70-200 2.8 when I can manage the size and weight, so I'm thinking of 2 similar zooms to start with (I rarely change up to the 55-250 when I'm away, but it's nice to have the option). That's why I'm a little concerned about dropping down to an effective 24-60mm with the kit. Does the IS from the lens work in conjunction with the IBIS or do you switch it off? (I can't remember reading about that with this specific lens).
metou
28 Dec 16 #53
This camera does have a Dual IS feature and easy to reach "image stabiliser menu" were you can select different set ups depending on the lenses and use. If you have a Panasonic lens with IS then you can use the both together giving you the Dual IS feature.
Other four thirds lenses you can select either to use the IBIS or lens IS, if using an adapted lens then the option is just the IBIS.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuVtIPUSVKo (This guy is good and talks about the weight of the camera and stabiliser from TheCameraStoreTV you tube station).
Also the kit lenses are 12-32/F3.5-5.6 and 35-100/F4.0-5.6 so the apertures will not be as good from what you have been using, the Panasonic zoom lenses with fixed apertures cost much more.
woldranger
28 Dec 16 #54
Cheers. I'd since had a look and read up on the Dual I.S. scenario - seems it's only a specific set of lenses that work with it Dual IS so it doesn't matter which of the budget kits I'd go for, Pany or Oly, as neither will work with dual IS anyway.

Yeah, it's going to be hard to get used to not having a zoom with a 2.8 aperture. Maybe I'll decide to drop a decent chunk of cash and go for a quick zoom eventually.

I spoke to John Lewis CS department and they said that if I have warranty issues with a body I buy as part of a kit, but dont have the lens to send in with it, it's fine to just send the body only - that was a concern of mine as Canon stipulated that I must send both the body and kit lens in on the last one I bought.

28 Dec 16 #58
Yeah, an amazon lightning deal at the beginning of December with twin kit lenses of 12-32/F3.5-5.6 and 35-100/F4.0-5.6... Not at a price close to the current offers with double cashback though plus no cashback through amazon purchases.
peecee98
28 Dec 16 #59
This being one of the critical reasons olympus OM-D e-m10 MK ii won me over. It has 5 axis IBIS, so works even if the lens is not IS in which case Panasonic GX80 reduces to 3 axis IBIS. This gives Oly an edge over Panasonic. I hope I'm right.

I have bought Oly twin kit version from Jessops using current Amex offer, so the eventual cost comes down to £325 after Amex + Oly cashback. It gets two (kit) lens for the price of one with Panasonic even after their double cashback. I'm amateur at photography, so not very fussy about pic quality differences between two cameras but wanted to step into MFT and learning to work with lens in tight budget.

Received this camera+ twin lenses from John Lewis, price matched at £449 after cash back (matching SRS).

With what lens/lenses? I bought a couple of Lowepro Dashpoint's - the kit lens fits in the 20 perfectly, and the 20mm 1.7 is snug but is fine. I have the Dashpoint 30 as well and that's a great fit with the 35-100mm. They come with a shoulder strap but I prefer to attach them to the chest strap on my daypack.

I'm new to these cameras, I have the 12-32mm that came with it. The lowepro 20 looks like it will fit so I'll give that a try.

Asking as a newbie, why did you buy the 20mm, for the bokeh? The 12-32mm is really poor for bokeh, there's a really good YouTube vid of 4K bokeh with the £150 25mm f1.7, but if the 20mm pancake can do the same id rather get that.

It fits really well with the kit lens in the Dashpoint 20 - I use a paracord wrist strap but I'm sure the thin ones that comes with the camera would go in, with the 20mm it might be a bit snug.
I wanted something small, fast, reasonably wide and affordable and the 20mm gets amazing reviews. The only downside is the somewhat sluggish focusing. If you're new and want to learn, register on dpreview.com and read up a bit before posting - you'll get better responses and feedback that way.
