Status update - I've found out how to get telnet access and change the root password without having to solder leads to the camera's motherboard, but it only seems to work on the original camera firmware (i.e. it won't work if you've updated to the latest firmware). To work out why, I'm going to need to solder leads onto my second camera (which has the newer firmware) - I may find time to do that tomorrow.

On the original firmware, when a microSD card is inserted the camera will look for a file called "snx_autorun.sh" in the root of the microSD card and run it if found.

So if you create a file called "snx_autorun.sh" in the root directory of your microSD card containing the following bash script, and insert it into the camera, the script will change the root password to "toor" (or whatever alternative you choose by editing the below) and start a telnet server:

#!/bin/sh
# Set root password
ROOT_PASS=toor
###
# Change root pasword
echo "Changing root password" > /dev/console
echo -e "${ROOT_PASS}\n${ROOT_PASS}\n" | passwd
# Launch telnetd
echo "Start telnet server..." > /dev/console
telnetd &

You'll then be able to connect to the camera over telnet using Putty with username "root" and password "toor" (unless you changed it in the above script). You can find the camera's IP in the Mi Home app.

Next step is to try to get some useful services running. It already has a simple web server running (albeit with no pages to serve), but I'm keen to get an rtsp stream out of the thing if possible.

Let me know if the above works for you and you can telnet into your camera.

After brute forcing overnight... *drumroll*... the standard root password for these cameras is "ismart12".

That means that we can remove the portion of snx_autorun.sh that changes the root password, leaving just the following:

#!/bin/sh
# Launch telnetd
echo "Start telnet server..." > /dev/console
telnetd &

Once you insert the microSD card with the above script in the root folder and hear the double beep, you should be able to telnet into the camera using user/pass: root/ismart12.

I'm continuing to explore getting an rtsp feed and ftp server running. The cameras come with a very simple web server that serves pages out of /tmp/www, which should help.

All of those have the same answer, use the third party RTSP hack.

Full thread about the hack here: https://github.com/fritz-smh/yi-hack/issues/118
Samtap easy setup here: https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks

With this it will provide an RTSP stream which you can add to third party apps. You can also create a script to work with it to either leave permanently in 'daytime' mode, and not enable the LEDs or switch to B/W, or you can make it turn to B/W at night without switching on the LEDs. I have tried both but found the quality is not great either way pointing out a window to a lit street.

Frankly at the moment, the Digoo BB-M2 works better for that, sure this Xiaomi has the potential to be the better camera in time as it is hacked more, but for what you are asking I have found the Digoo to be better right now. You can turn off the night mode on the Digoo, then if you use a web browser to remote log into it, you can lower the fps down to 5fps, which increases exposure and gives a much better night time image.

Thanks man, the video instructions were still pretty awful, but I managed to get it right, I was using the wrong section to add devices (there's two options to choose how to add devices). Working great, quality isn't the best, nor is the FPS but it does the job. Now just need to get 2 sd cards and hook these up somehwere

does anyone know if there is a way to download video from the app? In discovery you can play but you can't seem to control or download the video. The motion detection clips can be shared, but cant see a similar option for the continuous record.
I assume there is no cloud storage on these. It seems like it accesses the local SD, but it does seem to cache motion clips on your mobile once you've played them once.
The reset times between motion seem to be quite long too. would be nice to be able to set that.

I followed this video and it worked first time - link.

When you get to the scan QR code, it should come up with a QR code on the screen, hold the screen up to the camera as in the video, you may need to move it around a bit to get it to see it.

Can you help me please? I installed the stupid app, selected Mainland china as a locale since the U.S one doesn't show any options to choose camera models. So anyway, I see two options for a camera one has brackets, I select with no brackets, and it asks to put the camera in setup mode with pin, so I hear some chinese crap voice, but the next instruction says scan QR code, and doesn't even let me scan instead it goes to 'connecting' then proceeds to reach 100% and fail.

I'm connected via Wifi on my iphone, not using a 5Ghz network.

I tried the other camera option but it asks me to connect to its own wifi, which then asks for a numerical password.

Also if I try connecting via Scan QR Code mode, it keeps saying product scan failed, and if I zoom too close it's too blurry to scan correctly.

What a headache this is, I'm regretting it already

Maybe, the camera may have an app/script that can check the version / download the firmware itself. Probably worth posting your question on the git link.

Also I noticed that the Hotukdeals link goes to a page where it states its OOS, whereas if you use this link, http://www.gearbest.com/ip-cameras/pp_607361.html then its in stock and comes with a US plug adapter. Still the higher price though.

Flagging this so I get updated on the comments. Interested in how that firmware turns out, mines are still in transit can't wait to get a hold of it.

I'd be interested in grabbing the firmware of the camera. I'm guessing the APP sends a link to the camera with the firmware download.

Hi no1knows. Hopefully you saw my update. The problem was that I created the .sh in a Windows editor which terminated each line with a CR and a LF. Once I'd chaged it to Linux format of just a LF it worked fine. I can now Telnet onto the camera. Keep up the good work.

Given the similarity between this and the iSmartAlarm Spot, I wonder whether I could pull some code/binaries off the Spot to increase the functionality of the Xiaomi. Would anyone be willing help me copy the firmware from their Spot onto a microSD card and then share it with me? Should simply be a case of me creating a script for you to put in the root of your microSD card that will run when it's inserted into the camera and copy the firmware to the microSD card.

That might also make it possible for me to create a Spot clone using a Xiaomi camera...
no1knows
7 Jan 17 1 #99
That's strange, yes lowercase is correct. I had some issues with the formatting of the .sh file when I created it on my Windows PC. Try downloading it from here straight to your SD card. This only includes the telnetd portion of the script, so won't change the root password. Also, telnetd seems to die on my camera after a while, but I can always connect shortly after the double beep.

Let me know how you get on.

Yeah, from your picture it looks like they probably fit just under the lid or base of the outer box, but I don't seem to have them. Will have to wait for others to comment if they have them or not, my guess is that it was done for certain batches, either the first batch got them as a bonus or after the first batch shipped they decided to add them to future batches.

Not sure what you are talking about on either of those points. I don't see any stickers in my boxes for my two. Both of mine are from Gearbest and are made up of the main box, inside that is the instruction leaflet and a white box with three 'compartments', one is open and has the camera fitted in nice and snug, the one above it if you fold out holds the USB cable, the larger one below if you fold out houses the pin used to push the reset button.

My fasttech one arrived today.

Same packaging as on the other page.

Looks nice.

Like the stickers so u can make it look like an animal.

The ones that are arriving do they contain an empty white box - I'm guessing it's probably for the USB cable.

Do u have the option not to update the firmware or does it just do it?

Can someone confirm the telnet script works with the new firmware?

I get the 2 beeps when I put the card in containing your script, but I can't telnet on. I've even tried rebooting with the card in, but still no luck. I was trying a few cameras. The Sricam SP012 problems for me were that in tinyCam I could only get the low resolution stream, no control of the motors and the native app required creating an account and gave only the same functionality as the Digoo, the only plus it had was wired Ethernet as well, no good behind a window though as the night vision cannot be turned off.

The Digoo BB-M1 has a few apps that work as 'native' but none of them made by Digoo, the best seemingly being the Vue Smart Home app, but they all crash all the time, the Vue Smart Home app being the most stable. It streamed high resolution to tinyCam but still no control of motors, one of the motors works in reverse, no good behind a window as the night vision cannot be turned off.

The Digoo BB-M2 has its own, manufacturer branded app, streams high resolution to tinyCam with full control of motors, and the native app has more options to configure, including the ability to turn off the night vision so this one is suitable for behind a window.

One thing I don't like about any of them is that the night vision IR leds are visible. If you used it as a security camera as they show in their marketing, anyone breaking in would easily see several red LEDs together and would obviously know where the camera is.

I sold my Sricam and one Digoo BB-M1 for what they cost, kept one BB-M1 but took it apart to see what I could do about the IR LEDs, can disconnect the board completely but that causes it to be in permanent night mode (black and white image), other option was to tape over the LEDs, which was fiddly and still not perfect, but not hard to take apart anyway.

Then after I preordered the BB-M2, this one got listed on Gearbest and I preordered this as well, higher quality camera, by a respected Chinese manufacturer, yes please. Probably won't get to test until the weekend. Not sure what my final setup will be but I am also looking at the Digoo SB-XYZ wireless doorbell, however they are working on a mains powered successor to this already so I might hold out to see what the v2 offers. Plus hoping Xiaomi release a video doorbell shortly as well.
MrFizzy
5 Jan 17 #82
nige182, this is too spooky. I too have two of these Xiaomi cameras and also the Digoo BB-M1 and Digoo BB-M2. It's a shame you need a different app for the two different Digoos. Personally I like the BB-M1 better but only because it is incredibly quick with the positioning. The BB-M1 app does however absolutely hammer the phone battery. In tems of picture quality and build quality the Xaomi wins though. I especially like the wide angle lens.

Fantastic work no1knows. Seems you came back with the password before I'd even had chance to have a go. Seems our good mate John, sorted us out. He's the chap I'd have turned to as well. If it doesn't break anything then it seems a good idea to change the root password, especially now it's out in the open! I take it the root password is the same on the updated firmware. Best be careful about future updates in case they change the password and remove your SD card trick (although hopefully you could still get the hash via the serial route). I've been putting off upgrading my firmware, but my second camera has just arrived so I'll give it a go on one of them and report back.
nige182
5 Jan 17 1 #80
Thanks for all your hard work on this no1knows. I've had two delivered the last couple of days but no time to check them out. I also took delivery of a Digoo BB-M2 which I had preordered.

In terms of size and design, this one is by far the nicest of the cameras I have had. It only lacks the motors to reposition but I don't need those and I doubt most people really do. Do you know if you can turn off the night sensor and IR lights?

If anyone does want one with motors, I have tried the Sricam SP012, Digoo BB-M1 and Digoo BB-M2 (all 720P, not 1080P unfortunately). Of these I recommend the Digoo BB-M2 easily, they are all similar quality cameras in terms of build and video quality, but I found the BB-M2 takes the edge in terms of the native app, functionality (this is the only one you can turn off the night sensor and IR lights, plus it has some other added functions in the app), and ability to function with tinyCam Pro on Android.

Well done, more progress and sounds like it works on the newer firmware as well. In addition to looking at rtsp/ftp have you managed to find/stop whatever process phones home to their cloud service? Also how have you found the wifi range on it?

It will be great if we can have a cheap, well spec'd and nicely designed camera with hackable firmware.

Also noticed its gone back up to $29.99 / £24.04 and the GBCE code wasn't working for me the other night. This is despite lots of embedded ads on most pages I visit stating its only $19.99 !

@MrFizzy, I managed to get root access over serial before changing the password, so I have the hashed password. I've also checked and it's the same on both my cameras, so worth trying to brute force if we can. Do you know how? The hashed password is "rJ0FHsG0ZbyZo"

Edit: I'm brute forcing now using "john" on linux

@welshbob, changing the root password shouldn't affect anything - the Mi Home app still works fine. Not sure if updating the firmware resets the root pass to default. Not a problem if it does...

My trick above seems to now be working on the latest firmware, can anyone else test and confirm?
welshblob
4 Jan 17 #76
You might be able to dump out the hashed version of the root password by copying the appropriate file to the sd card by modifying the script. You'd then need to brute force it though.
MrFizzy
4 Jan 17 #75
Excellent work. Presumably there's no way of knowing the original root password and hence the ability to restore it. Any idea if changing the root password breaks anything i.e. can you still use the Xiaomi app? If you upgrade the firmware after changing the password, does the root password then get reset again i.e. you then lose the ability to log in with your new password? I have a camera I haven't updated yet so I'll try your script tonight. Thanks.

#!/bin/sh
# Set root password
ROOT_PASS=toor

Either xiaomi actually manufactured it for them, or they licensed the design + software. I really doubt they would have copied it so closely and managed to get hold of their code

All this xiaomi stuff is destined for the chinese market so it shouldn't mean any increased competition for the ismart product

Does anyone know how much range the WiFi has on these? I bought a couple of Sricam SP012 and they are awful for WiFi amoungst other things.
Very cheap but unless there are local ways to configure these other then the crappy apps supplied then it will be a no go from me. So rooting for no1knows efforts.

Interesting thread here (although not that useful) ... https://www.ismartalarm.com/boards/topic/2951/is-the-spot-camera-a-xiaomi-camera-that-costs-15

My guess is that xiaomi were either the original manufacturer or have cloned it. Given the comments in the thread though I find it odd that they are using ismartalarms code unless they are the open source bits. Expect xiaomi have changed the innards to make it cheaper to produce.

Edit : Wonder if this;
"I'm not allowed to say too much, but I can say this - We created Spot (design, specifications, development, everything), and Xiaomi really liked it."
Means that ismartalarms did a deal with xiaomi to licence them? It does sound like the hardware is different though so the original ismartalarm firmware may not work. Unless of course this is going to be an upgraded version they will release soon.

The only way to use this device is with the Xiaomi smartphone app - it has no accessible feeds or any other interface, so I'd guess it's not onvif compliant...

2 Jan 17 1 #58
I have. The initial set up routine is different - Xiaomi does it by creating a QR code that you show to the camera to get it onto WiFi and associated with your Mi account. iSmartAlarm appears to try to use Bluetooth to communicate with the camera, and doesn't recognise the Xiaomi. As I say, suspect this is simply a firmware difference since there are plenty of clues that the Xiaomi is made by iSmartAlarm.

Nice work no1knows. Keep us informed how you get on. I'd definitely be interested in making this little camera a bit more flexible and not tied to the Xiaomi app.

Just wondering, has anyone tried connecting these using the iSmartAlarm Spot app since thats in English and according to 'no1knows' has the their software/code over it?
no1knows
1 Jan 17 #55
It's definitely the iSmartAlarm Spot camera with modified firmware, their software/code is still all over it. If I had access to a Spot I'm confident I'd be able to clone the firmware onto the Xiaomi camera.

I've spent the day hacking mine to try to get telnet and rtsp servers running on it so it'll work with zoneminder and avoid the Chinese-only app and potentially dodgy cloud storage. Managed to root it over serial (took some dismantling and soldering) and get telnetd running for remote root access but no luck with rtsp yet.

Don't get the Sricam SP012, I could never get it working in HD with tinyCam, only the basic low res image. I also couldn't get the camera control working with tinyCam. The Digoo BB-M1 is a similar price to the Sricam SP012 and you can view the HD image with tinyCam, but again no control of the camera through that app. And although you can set up the Digoo with 3 different apps, none of them seem to be really updated and maintained. I am still using one Digoo myself at the moment though.

Still waiting for my Xiaomi that I had pre-ordered to try this, I expect the Xiaomi would be better though.

Friends don't let friends buy cheapy Chinese IP cameras. They almost never get updates and that means they almost always get hacked.

If you actually understand that and can reliably firewall them off from the internet, and monitor access, go ahead... But these just aren't safe for consumers.

You raise a legitimate issue.

However, aren't most of the problems associated with Wifi Cameras the fact that people don't secure it properly when setting it up and don't change the default passwords etc?
