Free for students if the Institution has the appropriate licensees. Not all Uni's may have purchased the required Office versions, and remember is tied to the account.
When people leave Uni the administrators submit the relevant email addresses to Microsoft and access to Office 365 will stop.

Be careful of getting this even if the link works if you are not a student. There.may be some post purchase verification. See the below response from Microsoft after someone moaned bits stopped working

Been thinking of purchasing this but we have 3 users at the moment using the £7.99 a month sub
Now if I purchase this which account will be deactivated? Think the best solution is to get everyone to copy their documents etc as a back up

Oh and verification was done prior to purchase using my .ac.uk address that won't work for a free (student) sub.

Spot on this, just changed from a free Personal subscription to this, expiry date is now 4years from the end of my free sub.
Better £60 for 4 years than £60 for 1 year.

Is there any point to 365 if you already have Office 2010?

If you want to use it on any pc without installing it, use Onedrive 1TB storage etc
Office 2010 is fine if you only use one computer, not worried about cloud backups stuff like that

Brilliant! Offline use for 4 years (expire 2021), use on 2 PC's, 2 mobiles, free updates, free 60 minutes a month Skype calls to phones in over 60 countries/regions and 1tb storage!! Bargain for final year dissertation. May even decide to do a masters to make use of this lol.

A bit of clarification, the "free" office 365 as a student is provided by the university that you attend. You sign in with your university email account and should be only valid while you're a student (some universities never kill the email accounts even after you graduate).
This product is for your personal microsoft account and not your university account. This is useful if your university doesn't have office 365, you want to have 1TB Onedrive on your personal account, or want a subscription that doesn't rely on your university account.
It's been £60 since 2012 well before they introduced office apps into university office 365 accounts.
This product is for your personal microsoft account, you can buy it in your final year of uni and have 4 years of office, 1TB storage after you've graduated.
The universities pay microsoft a volume license subscription to have office 365 assigned to the university email accounts. So yes university students, faculty etc do get office for free* but it's under a university email account and you're more than likely no longer going to have access to that benefit once you leave university.
*University pays for it as part of their annual software license agreements.

Let's be clear: the free one is ONLINE only. This subs allows you to download and install Office for OFFLINE use.
I don't know about you folks but I have no use for online only software.

After adding to basket it requests your academic email address so won't be open to everyone just those institutions who have signed up.

yes it says verification is required, but not sure if that means you need an email that academic people get given?
