I bought one of these without the pass through socket for the same price a month or so ago as the WiFi was very patchy throughout my house. All up and running within 10 minutes and works brilliantly. Would heartily recommend this to anyone.

Never used or needed a WiFi extender/booster. I have a variety of wireless networks set up on my router... would I need to duplicate the security settings etc on this device or does it rely on the router for that?

Hmm I was about to buy one of these wifi extenders but just bought another router instead. It's about half the price but only 450mbps. I'm not exactly hot on my networking tech so I'll have to double check that I've made the right decision.
