I posted this a couple of weeks ago when it was 119.99. It is now 109.99 but with DISCOUNT CODE - 10% off the marked price this reduces it further. Enter code: 10LAPTOP at checkout. Also available in store.

Received a bit of bad feedback from some who had bad experiences with it. For my part I have bought 2 and have had no problems with either. Its now below the hundred quid mark which in my opinion is great value for what it is.

Hope this helps someone looking for a cheap last minute xmas present!!

I'm typing this on one of these as we speak.
Perfect for light use and lying in front of tv surfing, which is what the majority of people use this type of machine for.

If you are a power user, then you have no business thinking about getting this machine, and you need to move on.

It is no Surface Pro, but it is IMO very competent at what it does.

A lot! This only has an Atom processor, 2Gb RAM and small storage. Think of this as quarter of what the cheapest Surface Pro is and can do. I have a similar one which is great for watching videos and browsing, but when you start putting heavier things on then it really slows down. I just put some awesome old games on like Portal which it can actually run quite well surprisingly!

Good deal so heat!

Apart from the Linx being slow and laggy compared to the MS Surface, also the screen resolution. The Linx tablet doesn't have full pen support, does not have a pressure sensitive digitizer screen (no specialised pen) The MS Surface Pro does, and is ideal for artist, art students and graphic designers etc.

haven't found it to be slow generally but then I've only used for Kodi, Office and general browsing which is what it is intended for. Agree that the keyboard can easily disconnect in certain circumstances - its magnetically connected so care needs to be taken.

These are really good tablets for the price, I bought one slightly over a year ago for just about the same price. In many ways it is better than our iPads: connectivity is easier via the HDMI and USB ports and storage can be easily and cheaply expanded with a SD card. The keyboard is a real bonus, I got a nice case from Fintie which tidies it up well. The only issue I have had is that the tablet takes a long time to charge (I'd say about twice as long as an iPad), I don't think there is anything wrong, and it is not a big problem as I charge it overnight and the battery life is good.

I'd certainly recommend this machine if one needs a larger tablet that is almost a laptop, it is excellent for streaming, browsing and running the MS Office programs that came with it. At under £100 this is a bargain, so I've added some heat.

But isn't that what these types of things are best used for anyway?

You know, sitting on the sofa watching a video or browsing the internet whilst your loved one wears your trousers and takes control of the TV?

I may be old-school, but when I want to do anything 'heavy', the last thing I want to use is a 10" screen. I would rather use a dual 24" screen PC setup any day over any laptop or tablet, be it a Microsoft, Apple or Android.

With a keyboard, laptops/tablets maybe OK for the odd email, Word document (other word processors are available ), whilst on the move but for serious work (video-editing, photo-editing, power-browsing, checking HUKD;), tablets just stifle workflow (IMHO of course).

I would actually like to see a side by side challenge/comparison between a PC user and a hip tablet and/or laptop user with the same 'heavy project' just to see how they would compare and what the difference would be time-wise for completion of the task.

Like I said earlier, it's probably because I'm old-school.

I got one of the 12" linx's for £200 on black friday. Initially was impressed but i tried to use it for work and it just kept having problems, stupidly slow charge time, keyboard was very temperamental and software froze fairly regularly/laggy on web browsing. That was with 4gb ram so i would question how well this will run with half of that. Ended up returning it.

Just my experience but if this model works out similar i would probably pay under £100 for it despite the problems. Heat for the price.

(I purchased Tesco Connect tablet PC (Windows 10), but returned it to Ebuyer recently. When you use Skype on that device it loses 20 to 30% of words from your conversation and the video quality is just awful.)

I've had a love hate relationship with this tablet. I loved it when I found it would run all my desktop applications. It is very tough, for example I dropped it on the floor recently during a "hate" moment and the screen stayed intact. I actually had to jump on it to break the screen and... the tablet still works. Overall I'd give it 7/10 but it can be hugely frustrating at times with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues.

If streaming and emails are what you want, get a Chromebook. This is a full operating system running on a paltry 2GB's of memory and a very small amount of disk space, whilst Google's offering is designed for web use.

I've tried going down this route before; at first it seems like a great idea but pretty quickly the thing becomes slow, sluggish and needs updates.

Save your cash for a better laptop or buy a similarly-priced Chromebook. Windows 10 has its uses but this really isn't one of them.

I know plenty who have had a bad experience with Currys. Just Google it. I my self have had several bad experiences. The most recent when they mounted my Currys TV also around £2000 scratched my furniture by installing the mount by sitting it on the sofa and then fitted the mount upside down and lop sided. Currys refused to undo the damage or the poor workmanship suggesting I should take them to court but it was their words it was their word vs mine. Laptop that didn't last more than 9 months and had to get my credit card company involved to get a resolution. Misleading staff trying to sell you warranty's you don't need in store, packaging a sale price up which actually works out cheaper if you buy the individual bits outside of their alleged sale. I'm Amazon all the way.

I'm afraid not, if windows update tries to reflash the firmware (which it's done to plenty of Linx tablets) it bricks them requiring a firmware flash which entails opening the tablet to reprogram the eprom (google it), something which both Microsoft and owners of Linx are NOT helpful with.

MisterMadHatter
19 Dec 16 #61
I don't think Windows 7 will work on this tablet as it uses a 32bit EFI boot loader. Whilst Windows 7 supports 32bit, the 32bit version of W7 does not support EFI boot loading (only the 64bit version does). I think the surface pro supports Windows 7 as it uses 64bit EFI boot loading. Hope that helps!

Unless they've updated the firmware to support 64bit then you're stuck with 32bit Windows I'm afraid. I can't find any mention of them updating the firmware to support 64bit and I'd be surprised if they have.

I love mine. Added an SD card and created a virtual drive on it that I mounted as a D: Drive and install all my software/files to for much more space. Perfect portable machine. Never had a single issue with the keyboard, and I keep a small USB wireless mouse (using one of the two USB ports) with it for ease. Running Windows 10.

Edit: In terms of performance, browsing the Internet and emails are great, watching videos great, no issues using it for work, typical applications like Skype, MS Office, Outlook, etc. have no issues, tablet use is very easy to navigate; TBH unless you want to play games on it it'll be fine for most stuff, although it runs the old GOG games nicely
MisterMadHatter
19 Dec 16 1 #66
Surely you have to draw the line somewhere between price and performance though. Obviously it depends what you want to do with it. It's like having a pushbike to bike a mile to the shops and somebody coming along and telling me I should upgrade to a motorbike. The tech reviews are fairly positive for this tablet at the £160 mark so for under £100 it provides a decent entry-level tablet for general use. You'd have to pay an extra £80-100 for the next level up and when you're buying a Christmas present for your girlfriend that's just not acceptable :smirk:

Heat for the price, though considering the age of the SoC I would have thought they'd have updated it to the newer Z8300 or above chipset by now, I bought the original Linx windows tablet over two years ago, and the specs have not changed since then, which for the PC market is very rare.

I have a Chuwi Hi 10 - similar to what you are looking at, but with full size USB ports. It works well as both an Android and Windows device. As Android, it lacks the latest Android version, but is reasonably current and works well. As Windows 10 it works best if you have an external keyboard to connect. The screen is excellent and it runs all the applications I need.

I bought one around Feb or March. I do like it though it does have some issues. the WiFi randomly stopped working for a while after a few months of purchase but then just fixed itself and has been fine since. The battery life is poor and drains even when not in use, if you fully charge it and leave it - even without use a day later it will be dead.

That's the negatives out of the way, I can say I do enjoy the tablet and essentially windows tabs are just a mini laptop - the software is the same. So anyone comfortable with windows 10 won't struggle to use it. I think it's very fast in comparison to the other tabs in the house, it has mini hdmi out so I connect it to the TV and use a wireless USB mouse to control it from the sofa. Can't do that with any other tabs that I can think of

I got this in Black Friday last year with the official keyboard attachment for 79.99. It works perfectly, one of the best Windows 10 devices I've used and with the attachable keyboard makes it just like a netbook.

I have one of these, and agree it's a love/hate thing, I wouldn't recommend it for my parents as navigating Windows 10 annoyances and occasional Wifi and keyboard dropouts is frustrating. It's a little slow responding to touch if there's more than one app open (i.e. Firefox and Memu), plugging in a mouse responds well.

I actually get on better with it if I lose the keyboard, as battery lasts longer, and it's a lot lighter (keyboard is weighted to keep the screen up), though it's still a heavy tablet.

It's worth mentioning I run Memu (Android emulator) on it and play games like 'Galaxy of Heroes' smoothly enough. It streams Steam games surprisingly well and you can plug a 360 controller into the full size USB ports. With a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable I can use it as a portable Kodi/YouTube device for kids holidays.

This tablet seemed good at first but became unbearably slow within a couple of months. Also the keyboard constantly disconnects which is very frustrating
KungFuNav
19 Dec 16 2 #96
I wouldn't say that the tablet slows down for no reason, it can slow down with more apps installed (that run in the background/startup), the most likely candidate might be that some of the Windows 10 updates cheekily turn on some of the privacy and location settings that may have been turned off before, it's worth going through the settings after any major update.

Also untick the option that allows wifi to function on standby should help with battery life: 'Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > [untick] 'On battery power, stay connected to network while asleep'.'

I've had mine for a while now but never had a problem with the WiFi or keyboard. The battery lasts ages, and charges up pretty quick. It's hasn't proven at all slow, albeit my smaller Linx with 1Gb RAM had frustrating lagging issues, but this one is great, albeit I havn't installed a tonne of software, just work software and a good selection of older games

For your power drain I'd recommend you change the power settings for battery to put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes. When I first bought this the power would drain at about 5% per hour even when asleep. Changing these settings has cured it for me.

I can't stand the mouse/touch pad on this. I use an actual mouse with it.

You have to press it quite hard to get it to click which means if you have it on your lap it risks wobbling everywhere.

I had one of these earlier in the year from Amazon, but it developed a problem where by it thought the keyboard was always attached. You could fix it temporarily by fiddling with the registry settings, but each time you docked the keyboard it happened again. Linx were no help, and it seemed to be a really common fault. However, before anyone writes these cheap Windows 10 tablets off as rubbish or underpowered - I'd personally say they're actually very competent at what they do. OK, you won't be running the latest games on them - but if all you want to do is social media, web browsing, emails and perhaps the odd bit of basic office stuff (Word/Excel Mobile are free) - then its absolutely fine. Once you figure out how Windows 10 works, and how to make the most of it in both tablet and laptop mode, then its actually a very flexible operating system.

RAM is less of an issue with TAblets than it is with PCs as the SSD in the tablet is higher speed thasn say a hard drive, If the RAM usage exceeds the 2GB it will use part of the SSD as RAM. This process is called Virtual Memory. Obviously more RAM is always best but its not as crippling as it is on a PC.

I regularly do presentations in work using mine. It is not slow by any means. It can run some full 3D games, albeit nothing from the last 3/4 years.

I purchased one of these on Monday and was reluctant to do so considering the last time I used Currys was several years ago and I received shoddy service then. It was due for delivery yesterday and made it to my local DPD depot but i didn't receive any dispatch confirmation. I phoned DPD several times and was told they were still loading vans. After phoning at 4PM I was told I would be receiving it today instead. I phoned today and they told me that it's been lost and to contact Curry's. I've contacted Currys and explained that it is a Christmas present and that it's required in time for Christmas. They responded with, "You must now allow an extra fourteen days in case the parcel turns up. After that time frame, we can either refund or replace it.". What a joke?! I asked why I couldn't just get one from the local store and they can sort out the delivery mess but apparently I'm the one who has to be out of pocket! Really not impressed...

21 Dec 16 #137
What i would do, is repurchase and choose free next day delivery or pick up in store if that suits better. If the other one turns up, either refuse delivery or accept and return. At the worst, you have to wait 14 days before getting refund on original purchase. If dpd say it's lost then it's doubtful it wont be.

21 Dec 16 #138
Thanks for this! My son got one of these last year and loves it - uses it all the time for homework, messaging and game playing. My daughter borrows it so much that I bought her one for Christmas a couple of weeks' ago. Still in mail packaging, so was slightly irked when I saw it was now £21 less than I paid for it a few days' ago. Called Curry's helpline and asked what they could do; amazing customer service and after ten minutes or so, while the checked with a supervisor, they gave me a £21 refund to the card I'd paid on. Top marks for Customer Service to Currys and another £21 in my pocket for Christmas - can't be bad. Always pays to call their helpline before going back in store!

21 Dec 16 #139

Funnily enough, about a few month's back on a different Linx Tablet HUKD Deal, a few people ALSO mentioned 'similar' also?, but ...

That was purely a well known (but at the time, not so well known) botched Window's 10 mandatory Software Update string that totalled MANY a unfortunate Linx Tablet at the time, etc? (the Linx Tablet per-say was totally innocent in that regard, as the Linx Hardware was not at fault, etc?, so ..... )

I have the exact same Tablet I bought more than 8+ months ago now?, and still (for no I nearly paid a similar price nearer that time in that regard in other ways ..... but, so far so good, for now at least). :-)

The Tablet itself is fairly robust! (in itself), rare, unfortunate, botched mandatory Software updates on the other-hand, is a different animal entirely?).

Bought one at £124.99 and returned it after a couple of weeks. OK, what do you expect at that price but it really is neither one thing or another. The keyboard and mouse are a real pain. The only good thing I can say is that the battery life is OK but what use is that if you don't want to use it.

No, the default power settings were set up to go into sleep on power button press iirc and hibernate was completely disabled. The problem with it was that whilst it was in sleep, the wifi adapter was still enabled so if I left it overnight and tried to power it up the next morning it was something like <10% battery. Disabling wifi adapter during sleep fixed it (although I enabled hibernate after x mins sleep also).

The TF101Really?

Is the Asus TF101 Transformer really 7 years old? Surely not!

I cheated and just had a look and it's actually less than 6 years old (general release around April 2011), but a good guess nonetheless.

Unless of course she borrowed the HUKD DeLorean 7 years ago and travelled forward in time to buy one?

Seriously though, The TF101 was my first tablet and I still have it in a drawer with my many many other under-used bits of tech.

Thanks, have ordered one for my bro for Christmas. Picking it up tomorrow, the discount code definitely says to have it applied on payment in store.
I have the 1010 light (16gb version) which I bought from Sainsburys on the £40 deal which was posted on here earlier this year and I bought a keyboard from eBay.
Although the 16GB is restrictive, I have been careful to install all my software to a 64GB microSD card which lives in it permanently. The 32GB C drive of this deal will be much easier to work with.
I have been really pleased with mine, the battery life is great, the keyboard is good and positive, the touchpad is a temperamental and takes a bit of getting used to. It's been a great netbook and has accompanied me on trips abroad. I've also used the mini HDMI port to connect it to the TV to watch a couple of movies.

I've received it today, and was testing Cortana, but found nothing was getting picked up.

I also tested via the voice recording app; updated the driver; and "boosted" the microphone settings to the max - all to no avail .... Maybe its a fault with the unit.

Hi, I am considering getting this via click and collect today to replace an ageing ipad 2 10 inch from about 6 years ago. Is this much of an upgrade real world use as opposed to just specs. Planning on just using for browsing, films, some low spec gaming and basic office work (word excel PP) but also like the option of using it as just a tablet so don't want a netbook or laptop only.

Can anyone confirm code works on click and collect?

Also planning on getting a year script to Microsoft office anyway, does this come with it included as I have read on some reviews that it did when first released, but does not specify 1010B. Hopefully someone who has just got one can confirm that? If it was only office mobile could that run on a desktop as well?

Lastly perhaps pushing it a little but for own personal reasons when visiting in-laws this holiday season will it run League of Legends for a sneaky game while dinner is being cooked or they've fallen asleep in the afternoon? Wishful thinking...
Djd1981

Can definitely apply code for click and collect as I got mine last night.........had an issue with screen rotation (option wasn't even showing on W10 data center) returned it this morning and they offered refund/exchange no questions asked. Decided to exchange and this one seems to not have the same issue as screen auto rotates out of the box. Just creating a USB recovery drive incase problems occur later!

Quick note about auto-rotate - I thought mine was also broken, but it only works with the keyboard detached. Kind of makes sense really i.e. you wouldn't want it in portrait with the keyboard. So, if you have a problem with it locked in portrait, detach the keyboard, 'Rotate lock' should now be available, check it is off, rotate the tablet to landscape (picture should follow) and re-attach the keyboard. BYU!

Don't frequent dodgy sites and the built in protection in Windows 10 is more than capable.

Hang out on pr0n sites and warez and crackz sites, running random programmes that download and installing 28 toolbars and you'll have a computer riddled more than a back street hooker. All the AV in the world won't stop everything. And will also grind your computer to a halt.
