On the other hand I think most people have it wrong.

There are a lot of people that have brand new cars on their drive, yet they drive 5 minutes away to work and back everyday.

Then they come home and watch a 32" 720p LCD from god knows when for the next 4 or 5 hours.

If I am going to spend a lot of time using it then yes I want the experience to be good. That is why I have this TV and an 08 golf

On image retention taken from the hdtvtest website on reviewing the oled LG E6V

'To minimise the risk of image retention and screenburn, like the previous generations of LG OLED televisions, the E6 will automatically dim its light output in a gradual manner after static elements (channel logos, test patterns, etc.) have been present on screen for more than one minute 105 seconds. The auto-dimming happens so slowly that most viewers probably won’t notice it until they need to perform user menu action, in which case the screen will brighten up suddenly as the auto-dimming is halted.'

And according to the avforums review it still doesn't work as they had image retention within minutes of use

That sounds like a workaround hack. :disappointed:

7 Dec 16 #67
Also there is flickering (like when you have a migraine) momentarily on busy screens when it automatically tries to upscale to 4K, which you can't turn off. Advice from customer services, always use it on game mode as it's the only one that doesn't do it.

It really has it flaws. But still love it:

Raised a call with LG support services. 3-6 week wait between communications and their best advice was to restore factory settings. Really disappointed.

Having had this tv for just under a year and paying £2300 for it, this is a great deal.

Love the TV but the image burn on it is terrible. After watching a channel with a logo (albeit bright white) for an hour a day, it's burnt in after only 2/3 weeks.

I'm on the fence as to get one of these TVs, but this screen burn comment has me very concerned. I could not accept this no matter how much I'd paid for the screen and it would irritate me every time I watched it.
Does it have a feature to "clean" the burn out (for want of a better phrase)
As a later model Panasonic plasma owner, I too am starting to think I'm better off with what I have for a while.

For a TV costing so much money, you wouldn't expect this kind of flaw. Would this not be covered under the warranty ? Does this happen with just this model or all OLEDs ?

5 Dec 16 #61
The price is definalety an off putting factor, commonly pointed out on every deal that comes through on this site.

Image retention does happen on this TV, but it has software built in to maintain your screen and it usually wears off in good time anyway, unless you just play COD with the HUD up 24/7 of course.

This TV is great for anyone not able to sit bang opposite the TV and for those who hate bloom and light bleed. If you don't know what those are, then it seems logical you don't buy this TV and head over to a KS7000 deal page.

I'd swerve AO.com, we recently had a 50" Samsung delivered, the delivery driver didn't realise I could see him from our flat, to say he was heavy handed is an understatement.

Pay a little more and get it from JL...or in the event of a fault you'll have to be on the ball with your consumer rights.

I paid just under 2k for the 55ef950 less than 12 months ago which is now loads cheaper. It's superb but I had to fiddle with the settings a lot to minimise the vignetting and pooling. I've heard this one's way better in that respect. yes, it's expensive but it's a great TV. Heat added.

I'm a big fan of Samsung's screens and the KS7000 is a great product for the money but there's a night and day difference between OLED and LED.
taikonautzero to vinsona85
4 Dec 16 #44
If I watch my oled tv in the dark and the scene goes black I can't tell where the TV is anymore (some led sets can achieve this effect by turning off the backlight). If a white dot then appears in the scene the only thing I would see is the white dot and I wouldn't really know where in the picture it was because there would be nothing else illuminated, even faintly, apart from the dot (in an oled screen the pixels are the light source).
The intro for the film 'Under the Skin's would demonstrate this beautifully.

But it's still a deal. A TV that usually sells and is discounted to £1,799 is a deal in my opinion, 5/6yr warranty or 1yr warranty - it's still a deal.

4 Dec 16 2 #33
I recently needed to upgrade my ancient 2004 model 480p Panasonic plasma (yes you read that right, 640x480 resolution) to something that I could play a PS4 on.
After pouring over reviews I chose a SONY BRAVIA KD43XD8088 as it was considered to have excellent blacks. I had a look at in the shop (RS) and thought it looked good. It cost close to £600 and had a 6 year warranty. When I got it home I soon realised that I wasn't happy with the picture quality; the blacks were far from excellent compared to my 12 year old plasma screen. Also, the screen uniformity was lousy, screen uniformity wasn't even a thing on my old tv, there was no variation across the screen at all. So, I discovered I'd rather watch a good 480p picture than a poor 4k one.

I bit the bullet, returned the Sony and bought the set I should have in the first place; an LG EG910V. This cost me £1200 with a 6 year warranty, twice as much as the Sony.
When I got it home I knew I'd be more than happy to live with it for the next 6 years, though hopefully it will outlive the warranty.

I think of it like this - £600 worth of disappointment or £1200 worth of joy. When I bought the Sony all I could think about was how much it had cost me, with the LG all I can think about it how happy I am with it.

I am very fussy about image quality and like to be immersed in what I watch so this may explain why I am so happy with a tv that does absolute black and has no noticable uniformity issues (as every single LED tv does to some extent, by the nature of the technology).
But even my 5 year old prefers the LG, she used to watch the tablet in bed while I made breakfast and this didn't change for the short time we had the Sony.
When we got the LG this did change, every morning since she's trundled downstairs to watch it instead of staying in bed with the tablet.

All I can say is buy something you're happy with and you won't be thinking of upgrading until you have a genuine reason.

To address some stuff on this thread:
> Brand loyalty - yes Lucky Goldstar did make some junk years ago. As did Skoda, SEAT etc. Are you going to hold outdated opinions forever, regardless of current form?
> Crazy spending this much on a tv in 2016 - for some prespective, a TV licence will cost you about £900 over the next 6 years.
> LCD versus OLED. This isn't really a fair fight - the most expensive LCD can't match the cheapest OLED in image quality.
> Curved screens - I don't like them personally but the curves on the LG oled's are very slight. Also, as the picture doesn't change depending on the angle it's viewed from the curve is a non issue. If you want to mount it in the middle of a wall then flat may be the better choice.

4 Dec 16 #32
Yes, burn-in is an issue, especially for gaming or bright HUD-like elements, such as on 24 hours news shows. Anyone who says it isn't is either blind, or doesn't own an OLED unit.

Input lag is higher than LCD screens, but LG have just released a game-mode for HDR content for their E6 model, which drops it down to about 37ms. Still not great, but much better than before. Hopefully there will be a firmware update for the B6 too.

It's a lovely TV, with serious flaws that I couldn't live with. I went with the KS7000 in the end.

I think you need your head examined if you pay that much for something that will be outdated within a year, what happened to the curved tv's the 3D tv's? OLED is just a new gimmick because people don't want to buy a new tv's unless their current one dies so they come up with these new experiences that don't really exist. once upon a time a HD tv meant something, and that wasn't long ago. now though people are almost shamed into upgrading because we are all sheep and have been taught to out do each other.
afroylnt to smudge92
3 Dec 16 3 #7
Agree to a degree - plasma is very close to OLED but my plasma has died and I don't want to buy a 2nd hand 35kg monster again so OLED is the only one that does blacks (not just dark greys) and a uniform (rather than blotchy) backlight. Personally 4k is of no use as I have no 4k feeds but yes OLED all the way.... it is the future...

Screen burn was more of a problem with older generation plasmas but not with the more modern ones. I could leave my plasma on a fixed screen overnight and only have a bit of image retention that cleared up in a few minutes normal use but no screen burn whatsoever.

Even on the older ones that did get it for channel logos etc the image quality was just so much better than anything else on the market that it was worthwhile putting up with their flaws. Think of it this way, those plasmas from years ago still have better overall picture quality than the TV's like Samsung KS7000 that everyone raves about and were half the price, you could pick up a Panny Plasma back then for ~£700 that would blow any of today's LCD TV out of the water other than the top end models which start around £1600+.

OLED also doesn't suffer from screen burn, it does get some image retention if left on a static screen but again it clears up.
