Yes, I suppose I can see their way of logic in that I guess?.
Depend's which angle your coming from really?, as what your stating is an assumption of what you assume to be common knowledge? (what is done in Industry, and what people are aware of is done in Industry isn't necessarily the same thing?).
Even though I get idea as to why they may want to solder stuffs to the Motherboard, I still fail to 100% understand why?.
This product is not a cheap £100-£150 Netbook or something? (where costs, and/or overheard's may dictate such 'practices'?).
This is a £450-£500 product, I think at that price I would at least deserve some kind of say (regardless of how 'remote'?), in how my own major purchase is/is not able to possibly upgraded, as and when I deem necessary? (it's a Computer, not an iDevice). :-)

Same Post here some days later:
Lenovo Ideapad 310 Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 2TB, 15.6" Full HD £499.95 @ John lewis
It saves a fair bit of space if the first memory piece is soldered in place. Not that unusual.

I was just going to buy this until I read the reviews on the John Lewis website .... that has put me off, but heat for the find.

AMD A12 deal, at John Lewis also right? ...can i ask what battery life are you getting?
i think this 310 model of lenovo is absolutely shocking, battery and speakers wise.
3hours max (under normal use of course- surfing/video). might be sending it back as starting to find other issues the more i use it..loud fan, weird disk usage, driver and graphics underperforming.
really sad! :disappointed:

That's really (but interesting still?), I don't think I've EVER come across (or for that matter heard of?), a Motherboard (PC, or otherwise?), that come's with it's own 'onboard' RAM? (of any kind?).
Never heard of anything like that before?. :-)
That's blatantly a new one for me ...

The OP's Deal link is showing as £499.95.
How'd you get it to £449.95?.
What's missing in what I'm seeing?.

My father in law bought this from johnlewis about a month ago because of the 3 year warranty. I gave him a small ssd drive so now has his 2gb hard drive in a small USB caddy in a draw.
Note this laptop has 4gb ram built in to the motherboard and the ram that is accessible to upgrade under a hatch is a Samsung 4gb ddr4-2133 sodimm. So whatever size ram you put in that one slot available, the motherboards own 4gb ddr4 2133MHz ram will be added to form the final count.
I fitted 16gb Samsung sodimm so now it's got 20gb of ram. Totally overkill but I had one spare that I was going to sell. He can have it for some rounds over the festive season! This amount of ram is normally around the £80-£90 mark and buying a £40 8gb ram stick to make a total of 12gb ram gives best bang for buck.

Why is this hot?
Graphics is way below average to do any form or editing/gaming and the 2TB is not even SSD (I would definitely recommend an SSD for your next laptop, it makes booting up/saving etc so much quicker and smoother).
Also 5 hours battery life for a laptop... I'm pretty sure they rounded up towards that number. So you can expect around 4 hours of battery life.

doubling your ram unless when you are using it you are near max on the RAM. An SSD will speed up any PC. I put an SSD in an old business grade dell for my mum, it made so much difference she hasn't even considered replacing the laptop. You will need to reinstall the operating system and any software on top, but it is relatively simple. You can also replace the disc drive with a caddy that will hold your HDD if you need large/slow storage for pictures and videos etc.

Yes, and yes, to both your questions, etc, hehe.
Doubling up the RAM from it's initial 8GB, to 16GB, will help HEAPS TOO! (AND could prove to be a wayyy cheaper alternative also?, so ..... ) :-)

Other than the obvious, eg. OP's Deal is double the Hard Drive, and double the RAM too (other than noticeable price difference, etc?), how does it compare with this too:
Lenovo IdeaPad 310 - 15.6 Inch Intel Core i7 8GB 1TB Laptop Bundle £404.99 @ Argos / £10 at Quidco on top
Eg. better/weaker CPU, Blu-Ray instead of DVD, or whatever?.
Thanx. :-)
I got my above link a few weeks back when it worked out at nearer the £400 mark, instead of the now nearer £500 mark, lol.
But I'm prepared to cash up the now £50 odd difference if the OP's Deal is notably much better than my already current offering, lol.
I've as yet NOT used my Laptop either! (so still new!), and from date of when I actually collected it, till today's current date equated to only just under 3 full weekends ago too (so very viable under Argos's 28 day refund policy, etc?, hehe).
I'm really deliberating here ..... :-)

Purchased the AMD A12 with 8gb RAM version of this on Black Friday, seems on the slow side to me (I'm not too pc/laptop savvy mind you) but does anyone know how I can speed things up at all? Any advice would be much appreciated  Merry Christmas all

Its a "U" cpu if anyone is wondering Dual Core not Quad i7-6500U
None of these deals are quite perfect for me. they either have an SSD and a pants screen or a good screen and a HDD! Still a good deal though, just not quite what I want.

You might as well not bother - it's barely more powerful than the Intel integrated, the only real benefit is nVidia graphics and driver technology. It's certainly not a gaming card, but would be ok for older games.
As someone else said, an SSD would be more useful here. Honestly even at £50 more with an M.2 128GB and the 2TB for storage.
