Great deal, looked into flying from up north last year, it would cost a fortune and take forever via numerous countries, driving to London and paying 75 makes alot of sense

Might actually be trains too in the new year, but don't quote me on that

Yeah easy option without driving to Luton was flight to tivat (Montenegro) then a daily backpacker bus to Tirana Albania and then a bus across

My missus doesn't think so, but yes I agree, done a lot of Eastern Europe by train, bus, taxi and it's always fun

Not done much in eastern Europe but wholeheartedly agree throw a backpack on and take land route, you will meet so many people that you will remember for years

Went there a few years ago to renew visa for Bulgaria (before they joined EU) - fantastic, amazing etc etc words are not enough to describe it.
The scenery around (and views of) the lake is out of this world.
I went by bus from Sofia to Skopje, stayed there a few days and then on to Ohrid again by bus, all cheap as chips really.
If you have a few hours to spare, take a bus from Ohrid down to St Naum and then just walk across the border into Albania getting a new country stamp in your passport.
When I was there, there was a little café/restaurant a few minutes walk down the road, so it was possible to have a coffee in a different country as well - the border official was a bit bemused and couldn't understand why a crazy westerner would do such a thing !
Probably mean a different or longer trip maybe, but Matka is just outside Skopje and is also an incredible place to spend a day or two - check it out online and marvel at the spectacular photos of the canyon, which can be seen with a short walk from the bus stops there - if you love the photos then believe that it's even better when you're there in person.
Perhaps I should admit that I was with a fluent speaker of Bulgarian, and as Macedonian is very similar then it was all much easier, but basic English is common in tourist areas like Ohrid so not too difficult - we rented a flat in Ohrid for just under a week from an agency by the bus station.

What do you class as cold ? Anything around freezing can be seen as normal for that part of the world at that time of year, but it could be 10 or over - type something like '' Ohrid temperature January'' into google and it gives lots of results........ marvellous thing this internet.
I've seen people from parts of Africa wearing thick coats in Alicante in temperatures of 30 degrees because it felt cold to them, so it all depends on the individual.
Remember that if you're not near any ski resorts then it's going to be out of season in Eastern Europe in January, so there will not be as much to do and many places will be closed over the winter, so best check before you book a flight, although anywhere still operating might be glad of the business and it ought to be easy to get a table in a café or restaurant in Ohrid itself, but tourist attractions need checking I imagine.
If you're near the airport then it's a cheap break - providing you've got somewhere to sleep then you can buy food easily enough and anything else is a bonus, so look at it that way and work out if that would suit you, just in case the weather prevents casual strolls.

Might be good to add that we were told by locals that rich kids from Skopje go to Ohrid in droves during the Summer and annoy the locals with their flashy cars and so on, but can't be sure if it happens around New Year - Orthodox Christmas is 7th January by the way, so that could also affect things around then.

I can't believe nobody had said it! It was the first thing that sprung to mind as soon as you posted it, but I didn't comment as I expected a deluge of similar comments.
Love that you were waiting for it. Glad I didn't disappoint. :P
