Paid £32.99 in Argos, but returned after getting for £24.99 from Game. Great game, got me to pick up my actual guitar again

Just so its clear for anyone reading this^ when you start of play tokens (which allow you to play any song on demand) are quite easy to get you get a few of them every time you level up but once you get to a certain level which is 10 IIRC they stop giving you them. So you either have to buy play token packs using coins (gold) which is very easy to get if your pretty good at the game you get about 200 coins per song. Or you can use hero cash which costs real money 1,800 coins gets you 3 play tokens or 45 hero cash allows you to play one song on demand you also get 5 free play tokens if you have none which is kinda nice IMO.
You will want to upgrade your guitar though especially if you want decent scores and to atleast stand a chance of winning in rivals mode and GHTV. Unfortunately this means you will have to save your coins and play a lot of crap songs instead of buying plays because as far as I'm aware there's no way to upgrade the guitar using real money. Im not sure theres 500 songs in GHTV but there always adding new ones and tbh there's that many songs I cba to scroll through them all whenever I want to play a song on demand. A fast scroll option would be nice but it is what it is.
TLDR: No its not ⓜicro transaction hell everything except content labeled premium or exclusive can be bought with the in game currency (gold) Its a fun game and I recommend it but be prepared to grind for play tokens and keep in mind premium shows can be played for free by earning 3 stars on certain songs on regular diificulty or higher only.

is it true this game is micro transaction hell & that the '500 songs' claim is false because they are not 500 songs available at any time?

I thought that too and put off buying until it was on offer recently but it's VERY easy to earn credits to play songs on demand. I've got 1000's after just a few hours so I don't anticipate needing to spend any real money on this game at all. There are quite a few songs on the disc anyway just like the old guitar hero games, so the 500 on top is a bonus IMO.

Just recently started playing the rivals mode after fully upgrading my guitar and learning to play on regular difficulty. I always seem to be matched against an expert player who hammers me which is a bit unfair should be matched against the same difficulty IMO. Hot deal though.
