Google 'blind vodka taste test', grey goose come out on top in any....no
You're fooling yourselves, falling for the marketing.

Professional taste tester Isark said: “Vodka is an almost flavourless white spirit that can be made from almost any agricultural product that has fermentable sugars.

“Grey Goose is just a French produced grain vodka in a fancy bottle that’s sold at a super-premium price £38, and just like French perfumes, we Brits have bought into Grey Goose’s clever marketing big time.

“Most drinkers would struggle to tell the difference drunk neat never mind with an added mixer.”

Some brands also make claims to be filtered multiple times or come from water sourced from glaciers. But none of this makes a difference, Isark added.

Grey Goose is grossly overpriced anyway. £22 is about 150% of the price it should be.

I don't really care about Grey Goose and definitely don't care what this Isark guy said, what I do care about is my own taste buds and how I feel the next day and I have to say there is HUGE difference between cheap nasty Vodka and good high quality Vodka.
there is no doubt about it.

Just picked up x1 Captain Morgan Spiced Gold 1l, x1 Courvoisier VS Cognac 1l, x1 Remy Martin VSOP 70cl, and x4 Ferrero Rocher for £78 from the Hagley Road Birmingham Morrisons. Very happy.

Just a note to say that the Captain Morgan and Courvoisier were priced incorrectly in the aisles but when I asked at customer services the prices scanned correctly as per the website.

They were all out of Grey Goose though. Expecting another delivery today.

Sorry just tasted Grey Goose, should have know better, French vodka would not stand the test. £36 a bottle is laughable but £22 is at best ok. Black cow is better and cheaper and English! Reyka is from Iceland but cheaper! My opinion but I won't be buying GG again.

The vodka I often see compared to Grey Goose and we haven't yet tried (but I've told my brother to pick up at Costco this year) is Kirkland Signature (French distilled, not US).

https://rebelbartender.com/2011/07/14/review-kirkland-signature-vodka-or-is-it-or-is-it-not-grey-goose/

"Are they the same thing?....The rumor’s foundation is certainly easy enough to see. Nearly identical on the nose and tongue (slightly vanilla-y, slightly sweet, very smooth) it’s not until the finish where the two really differentiate themselves. As previously noted, Goose just sort of fades off into a very mild burn with no real standout flavors. Kirkland, on the other hand, is far more distinctive: a slightly more noticeable burn and notes of charcoal and olive that might lend themselves well to a martini.

Impressive as the Kirkland vodka is, however, the best thing about it might be its price – assuming you already have the Costco membership, you can get a 1.75 L handle of it for $27, less than a single 750 mL fifth of Goose costs."

http://www.riverdavesplace.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-100134.html

Also, on a slight tangent, Kirkland Small Batch Premium Bourbon is made by Jim Beam if you believe this forum post from 2012: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?posts/13856777/

http://i.imgur.com/o4QXO.png

Edit: Here it is on the Costco UK site:

Kirkland Signature French Vodka 1.75L £39.99 (inc VAT)
£33.33 (exc VAT) http://www.costco.co.uk/view/p/kirkland-signature-french-vodka-175l-116515

Can see one tag on this Deal is "Price Glitch", being pedantic but it isn't!

Not sure if Barrack Street, Glasgow are only putting out 5 bottles of "ordinary" Grey Goose (as was on the shelf at 10.40am) - though I didn't look that hard. 3 left now if that's all they've got!

As others are saying, the Citron and other varieties are on offer as well. The lady who served me was asking what's so good about it. Just went by what my sister said - apparently it's "cleaner" tasting and (I think) you get less of a hangover with it (depending on mixer?).

I bought my sis Patron Agave Vodka a while back (Amazon offer) but she's not tried that yet.

Absolutely there is a real difference between Smirnoff and other brands. Smirnoff is a lousy vodka, like you it gives me headaches in the morning.

I actually find the Waitrose own brand fairly smooth, probably on a par with Absolut.

I didn't rate Grey Goose that highly, although the Adnam range is really good, as is Chase, both of which I liked better than Grey Goose...

Been lots of blind taste tests and the results vary enormously .. But the premiums rarely get near the top . But people buying into the marketing will defend it to the death . Same as iPhones .. Style over substance , limited , screens way below other makers , but folks are prepared to fork out £1400 on a 2 year " deal" just to have the latest model. If you believe it , it must be so . Anyhow the amount of chavs knocking this stuff back in spoons , it must be good .

These taste tests are so subjective its incredible.

Everyone has a different palate, and that test seems to conclude that cheaper vodka is better, might say more about the tester then the vodka!

After the 4th visit in 15mins (as I was limited to 2 x 1l bottles) I was ask to stop by the manager saying limited to 2 per customer not 2 per transaction. I smiled and laughed I'd already got eight. There plenty of of Morrisons locally

You can stick to your Supermarket value range Vodka then. To those of us with taste buds capable of tasting the subtle complexities of superior Vodka we will enjoy this excellent Vodka at a reasonable price. Oh, and enjoy the hangover from the impurities left in the cheap vodka . Personally I've never had a headache from drinking this all night but Smirnoff will give me a headache almost immediately.

Compared with what?

This is nonsense mate. I've done the taste test with premium and house vodkas before and believe me, you can tell. I don't like Vodka and can tell the difference, so I'm not sure what that says about the guys palate.

If you don't believe me try it yourself when your next in a pub.

As for the pricing, well. That's up for debate. Is it good quality vodka, yes. Is it better than house vodkas, yes. Make your own mind up on that.

HEAT for the price but the flavour / brand of vodka is a personal taste ...it's got nothing to do with price ... the more expensive doesn't always mean better ! e.g. Some people prefer shop brand ketchup to the Heinz ..half the price too :-)

I paid 13 euros for Tanqueray Gin 1L at Alicante airport, that is between £10/£11 depending on the exchange rate at the time, and surprisingly it is generally cheaper in the Spanish shops than the airport. Although £16 is a good price in the UK, it just goes to show how we are being ripped off with government duty on spirits if the normal price is £26.

Of course it's vastly overpriced .. Look at the price in USA . Made in France sent 4000 miles on a ship and still half the price ( yes I know .. Taxes) . But people are suckers for brand image , iPhones .. Dated , limited , but have the brand image . Glenn's vodka did win a blind taste test ( GG was about 8th out of 10) but we choose to ignore cos it feels good to buy into " the best". . Gives a certain street cred when folks come round .. GG (I have money) .. Glenn's (I am a scummer) .

I disagree about the taste neat, as I said stick it in the freezer, Smirnoff etc needs to be drunk with a mixer it's too harsh, a decent vodka is better straight

This is HUKD
It's all about supply and demand - which usually determines the price and resultant HEAT and popularity of a HOT deal
A 70cl bottle of Grey Goose Vodka @ £22 - Nationally available in a supermarket - even beats the Amazon online price

It's just another really HUKD

Which £10 vodka beat grey goose on a taste test and won several awards? It was from either Aldi or Lidl......
Halloway
7 Dec 16 3 #45
I don't care what Wikipedia says. It is overpriced. It is no higher in quality than vodkas in the sub-£20 bracket such as Stoli, Absolut, Finlandia and New Amsterdam. The brand is a triumph of marketing over quality, successfully pitching the product to people who have more money than sense and an overwhelming desire to be fashionable at all costs.

Wow, pleb-friendly 22quid for chav-tastic Grey Goose... Need to come a bit lower still for the price to match the quality though.

It's proper chav juice in the local Wetherspoons , £4.20 a double . Don't think the marketing guys imagined the Nike airmax, trackie bottom wearing charvers knocking them back though.

7 Dec 16 #35
Agree .. Style over substance .. But people love a bit of marketing . Morrisons had a litre of New Amsterdam stuff for £16 , owned by Gallo and made with American wheat etc etc . But as you say in most blind taste tests the results are all over the place , cos unless vodka tastes proper manky(Smirnoff ) it's much of a muchness.
jackojack
7 Dec 16 7 #33

But none of this makes a difference, Isark added.

dont ruin it by adding lemonade or coke, stick it in the freezer then drink with a slice of lime, belvedere is better imo

I like both goose and the dere, for £22 you can't go wrong at all especially if you get a bottle as a present as person receiving will think you spent a lot more. Grey Goose is not usually on offer.
Halloway
7 Dec 16 4 #29
Grey Goose is grossly overpriced anyway. £22 is about 150% of the price it should be.

We'll let you know - regarding your expert review!

Quote from Wikipedia:
"The wheat used in the creation of Grey Goose vodka is grown in Picardy, France. Distilled in the same region, north and east of Paris, the distillate is then sent to Cognac, France, where it is blended with spring water and bottled. The wheat used in Grey Goose is soft winter wheat, sown in October and harvested in August, which provides it with four additional months of growth in comparison to summer wheat. The wheat sold to Grey Goose is categorized as "superior bread-making wheat", and wheat that is soft.
Enzymes are used to break down the carbohydrates into fermentable sugars. The fermentation takes place continuously over six cascading tanks, producing a 20-proof beer. The bread-wine is then distilled into spirit using a five-step process. The water used in the vodka comes from a natural spring 150 metres (500 feet) below the blending facility in Cognac, which is lined with limestone, providing calcium-rich spring water. The vodka is also filtered through a copper filtration system in order to impart additional flavours. That water is then filtered to remove impurities. After the filtration the vodka is bottled in a plant dedicated solely to bottling Grey Goose. Grey Goose vodka is bottled with a replaceable cork rather than a screw-top cap"

wish it were belvedere and not grey goose :disappointed:

personally I find grey goose is all marketing and no substance. It makes a smooth drink but doesn't have any personality. In comparison, a belvedere vodka martini has a slightly oily mouthfeel and nutty flavour to it.

Of course I'm no vodka connoisseur, just a slightly obsessive collector of spirits - I'm sure there are much better lesser known brands in Russia and Poland.

p.s. it is an amazing price and I will probably buy some anyway
