Well, as one person is spending a whole day skiing in the mountains, one person is using it for a scuba expedition, and one other is holidaying in the Philippines, I'm starting to feel a bit left behind.

So, will the battery and SD card last long enough for me to free fall from a balloon on the edge of space?

Hi, I know I'm massively late to the party here with Go Pros so excuse my ignorance, does anyone know if these would make a decent in car DVR? I'm looking for a cheapish DVR but a quality one too, I know these were initially built for action but I'm just wondering if they'd double up for in car use or if there's a better option I should consider for around this price? Cheers!

You can use it as a dashcam. Depending how long your journeys are, it might not be able to record the whole thing.

Gitup Git2, costs around £80 with a waterproof case, records in 2k, has removable battery, looping video and a lot of other features that you'd like. Beats this gopro camera easily.
Or you could buy a Mobius, it's a great camera too around £40 mark.

This is a a fantastic deal. I also bought one at Argos for £150 and thought that was a great price for a 1080p 60fps recording and a two year guarantee. You will not find this quality in a copycat model.

Personally I would look for someone like Argos or John Lewis to price match this rather than buying from Curry's. Can't go wrong for 99 quid though.

Been looking to get one of these to replace my broken video camcorder. dam it op this is the last thing I need to see on Xmas eve! Word of advice to anyone wanting to buy a sports cam... having a Ltd panel on the back will make your life much easier.

I own the Xiaomi's Yi sports cam I have manged to get some great footage off it, but it's a pain in the **** not being able to see a menu or even see what your recording!

muscle memory is needed for Xiaomi's cams as 1 click for taking photos 2 clicks for recording. That's the last thing I need when I'm stood on top of a half pipe about to drop in and I'm **** around with buttons.

Think I will treat myself op...Heat

I got my son one of these from Argos for £150, this is a great deal. 1080p 60fps, waterproof to 40 metres, LCD screen and can even control and view what the camera is viewing on your iPhone/iPad in real time.

I was looking at the Hero 5 Black but unless you're a professional and need the extra features or want 4K this is great and at £250 less it's a no brainier.

24 Dec 16 #49
Bloody auto correct on my phone yeah I meant LCD. this will be more than enough for anyone wanting a sports cam. Yeah you can't take out the batter or replace it but then again from reviews I watched moat people are getting 2 hours of footage with the LCD on as well.

Purchase a decent portable battery charge and you can also charge it while your not using it??

also have a look on eBay for kit. There's plenty on there and you will be able to get yourself sorted in no time.

fishmaster
24 Dec 16 1 #57
No, as soon as you buy it and you will, just ask the store assistant where the bin is and drop it in there, they've all come out of the bin and put back on sale, which is called recycling.

No need just take a sneaky peak in their bin, you might make it out without the alarm going off or you could ask for one for free, that's what I do (the latter not the former as that's illegal). So far I've not succeeded but the law of average says I will one day.

so i recently bought a cheap waterproof action cam on ebay for £18

the pics and video are awful.

i never wanted to spend £100 on one, but I wonder if the £50/£60 ones will be any better than the cheapo one or i'm just better off getting this?

are there any cheap cams that are any good (doesn't have to be as good as go pro, just needs to be usable!)

If the battery is a worry on a long journey, you could always use a power bank or USB socket in the fag socket in the car to give it constant power.

Biggunspaul
24 Dec 16 1 #73
I think the max SD card size this will take is 64gb.

I have the hero 4 silver and use a 64gb card and find that's more than enough for general holiday use,and if I find it does ever get near full I just export the footage to my iPad.That said,if you plan on recording car journeys of 2 hours plus,it will soon fill up.

24 Dec 16 1 #91
I wouldn't personally unless you want to use it as an action cam too. Why:

1 - Its not really designed for it so you miss out on a lot of features that something like a Nextbase 312GW has as standard e.g.GPS stamp, speed and importantly auto protect in the event of an impact etc.

2 - The Nextbase 312GW is a really good camera and costs less than this one (around £85)

Horses for courses but to buy this as a dashcam is like buying a smartphone to use solely as a camera. Hope that helps
Dodge62
24 Dec 16 #92
Not really - no zoom capability and a very wide field of view. Not sure if this model has selectable field of view, but even the narrowest will be very wide angle - you won't be able to get in close to whatever you're filming. Also quite hard to point it exactly where you want it.

24 Dec 16 #95
FYI
PROS
Rugged design. Numerous mounts available. Built-in Wi-Fi. 1080p60 video capture. Extremely wide field of view. Affordable.
CONS
Clunky interface. Front LCD not backlit. Can't be removed from case. Built-in battery can't be swapped in field. Two-hour recording life per charge. Lens shows a lot of distortion. Omits image stabilization. Requires optional accessory for tripod use. Doesn't include AC adapter.
BOTTOM LINE
The GoPro Hero+ is a solid action camera if you're on a budget, but it can't be removed from its case and you can't swap its battery.

No you can only transfer pictures to the ipad via the cable, you can't take them back off.But there are apps that allow you to do it,such as an app called send anywhere. With that app I can send anything to and from the ipad.

There is a downsideto that cable and that is the fact it won't read/copy anything you like, example,it won't read the SD card from my dash cam,but it's fine with the SD cards from my gopro and canon DSLR.

If you want a dash cam you are better off just buying a dash cam.As suggested earlier, the nextbase 312gw is a great buy award winning dash cam for around £80.

A proper dash cam will start and stop recording when the ignition is turned on/off and records in a constant loop.

I've been looking at the Xiaomi Yi 2 (the 4K model). it compares very well to the GoPro Hero 5.

Video quality is about the same, it's half the price, and the interface/screen is more responsive and less buggy.

The benefit of the GoPro 5 and session is that they are both waterproof without a case. That isn't a major concern for me as I don't see myself using it underwater anyways (though that's still a cool feature). The microphones sound significantly better on the GoPro 5 models too. By the looks of it, mics are one area Xiaomi have cut corners.

I could always use a lav mic to record audio with the Yi 2. That's fine if you are recording a video in one big long take, but post production audio syncing would become a royal pain in the ass if you are syncing up dozens of shorter clips.

As with all things, it depends on how you use the camera and what you are looking to do with it.

From the video tests I've watched and reviews I've read,

Apart from recording basic video, how is this any good as a dash cam ?

It doesn't have GPS for location stamps,it won't display speed stamps,it won't save recordings automatically if there is an impact.it won't start/stop recording when ignition is turned on/off.

If you want a dash cam, then buy a dash cam.

lets face it,you wouldn't buy a dash cam and use it as a action camera.

Hi all, im travelling quite some distance to pick some up tomorrow, i reserved more than i need, mainly because i know the amount of times i get calls in the morning to say it was a 'system error' and 'it says we have 3 but we cannot find them' so to be on the safe side, ive reserved more than i need and in more than one branch, if they are all available, then i can bring them down and post to anyone that wants any, ofcourse postage fees will apply, and possible a few quids to help me cover the petrol, not trying to make profit here, i am travelling over 100 miles, and my car is not eco friendly, so will cost me £40 easily to travel down, but i will check this post tomorrow morning and see if any interest and will buy accordingly if there are any extras. i have nothing to lose here, but i thought i can share my gain since i know a lot of people were unable to reserve, and lastly - collection is also welcome, i am based in wembley, london. thanks

Thank you for the advice  gonna give the 312GW a go!
frakison
26 Dec 16 #209
No problem, glad to help. I have the newer 412GW which isn't that different to the 312GW to be honest and its really good. The holder acts as a GPS antenna and the unit just slots in and out thanks to the magnetic connector.

When you watch the video back, it shows you a "live" google map, your speed and GPS location (this can be turned off if you're paranoid about it), and even telemetric data about g-forces?!? There's also a parking mode, not sure if I'd use this as I never leave the cam in unattended, but if you do, it will record any movement or impacts automatically. You can also set it so that it can protect files where something may have happened, I reduced this sensitivity down because the roads here are crap and it was filling the card with protected files just because I hit a pothole!!

Overall I'm happy with it, a lot of people have laughed and said it stupid but I've only ever had 3 accidents in over 20yrs of driving and all three were non-fault! Although I won in the end, this would have made it much quicker and easier to prove blame.

You could try the £1 powerbanks found in the Poundland type shops. They usually have a capacity of 1200mAh. That's not a lot, but keep in mind the battery in this Gopro is rated at 1160mAh.

That said I'm not sure I trust the quality of these ultra-cheap powebanks. I'd be more inclined to go onto Amazon and find one at a low price with good feedback.

I am well confused now with delivery thing. It clearly states and stated since I have been looking at it from Christmas day that it is not available for a home delivery only for collection. So, how you guys managed to get it delivered if the option is not available?
Noddydog
30 Dec 16 #255
In the first 24 hours of this deal appearing on HUKD the home delivery option was available on two occassions for a few hours. Some of us purchased the Gopro during those periods and opted for home delivery. But after those two occassions home delivery hasn't reappeared.

On a connected note has anyone thought of actually ringing the stores that show stock and asking whether they would be prepared to either post them to you or let a courier firm pick it up from them? This isn't all that hard to arrange and many courier companies have first time user cheap introductory offers. Alternatively use a service like Parcel2Go.

I've used this process of arranging collection (rather than the seller arranging delivery) several times over the years and bagged some bargains, particularly on eBay where some folks only sell via 'collection only' (thereby negating 98% of your eBay competition).
ant78
30 Dec 16 #256
i have never had a gopro before so im not clued up on them BUT the picture quality is crap to say the least, very grainy and pixelated or do i have a faulty one? Also when connected via WiFi to my android phone its so laggy its laughable !
Noddydog
30 Dec 16 1 #257
What lighting conditions are you shooting under? For example if it's indoors on a cloudy day then the camera will automatically increase the 'gain' (shown as iso or dB). This will result in very grainy videos/photos. On most action cams you won't get a great picture in low light, ie indoors. The Hero4 or 5 will do better, but you'll pay 2-3 times as much.

It's better if you try your Gopro outdoors to see what the pucture quality is like. Remember these cameras were originally intended for outdoor action and, being the size they are, both the sensor and lenses are quite small. This means they won't (with current technology) capture as much light as some other types of camera.

Finally there is an 'auto low light' feature on the Hero+. This will get rid of some of the graininess, but the frames per second (fps) will drop to around 8 whereas UK video works on 25fps. So you'll notice the video will appear much more jerky.
Noddydog
30 Dec 16 1 #258
It's possible the laggy wifi streaming is actually down to the 8fps (opposed to normal 25 or 30fps) when 'auto low light' kicks in. Try the same thing tomorrow outdoors, when it's bright, and see if you get the same result.
ant78

KC1 - search on CCBETTER HERO on Amazon. A 'best seller' set of accessories should appear. They are currently £23.95 and have had 188 reviews. Can't seem to find a link from the Amazon app to copy and paste here.

Sameerpawar - it was the Kirkcaldy store. Most days when I looked within 100 miles or so there were none available anywhere. Dunfermline did have them in one day this week (Wednesday I think), and Kirkcaldy today. When I collected at lunchtime the person serving me said they had 3 in stock at that point. I've done a check tonight and none available now. Worth keeping an eye on the currys website a cpl,of times a day.

Same, very blurry and kept having NO SD - Even though using Sandisk Extreme card. Was on Chat with them, reformatted and manually updated the software. That seems to have solved that issue. Looking online, it's not the best for pictures indoor (iPhone quality is better). Need to take it for a test outdoors.
Noddydog
31 Dec 16 #266
I've also been having 'no SD' and 'SD ERROR' messages using a brand new Sandisk class 10 32Gb Ultra micro SD card. But I've also been having issues since I updated the firmware (which was a big hassle). For example the gopro switched off at one point with two bars shown for battery. I couldn't turn it on for 15 mins and even trying to charge it didn't work (not even a red recharge light on front). Then all of a sudden it worked again for 10 minutes or so until battery turned off.

I'm not impressed with tge Gopro software apps on iOS either. The Capture app shows an old version of the firmware for my camera. But if I use the Android version it shows the latest version. I tried using the Gopro training app on iOS and that just wouldn't log in with my Gopro account. I tried contacting their customer support via the dedicated section of the Capture app, but no dice there either with an error message.

I'm beginning to think Gooro is all glossy brand with poor support and quality underneath.

But it's interesting we're both having issues with these Sandisk cards. My one works fine in other devices as does other micro SD cards in this Gopro.

Not sure where the problem lies, the card or the Gopro. I'm on the verge of sending both back.

As for image quality. Hmmm, it's ok outdoors. I have the advantage of using a lot of different cameras (it's my profession). What I'm seeing for something this small and at this price point is about right. It's passable but not as good for sharpness and (lack of) noise/graininess as a more expensive/larger camera or a newer iphone. The physics of light determines you'll lose something with a small sensor and fisheye lens. Also Gopro aren't going to put their best codec in a middle of the range camera. Otherwise why on earth would you step up to the Hero4 or 5.

I purchased the £19 Zookki version when it was down to £13 in a lightning deal. Well worth it! The quality is much better than expected. The only downside of this particular kit (your one) is it doesn't come with the case. But even so, this is a great kit.
morgie
1 Jan 17 #270
I went for an Amazon's Basic case last week (another lightning deal!), seems to do the job but can't compare to anything. Basically a lot of choice out there, but I'd recommend people keep an eye on the lightning deals if they haven't already picked up some accessories.
thisisnadim
1 Jan 17 #271
Thanks for the insight, I'm pretty much getting the same issues. I spoke with GoPro again and they said the SanDisk card I have is the recommended one, however many users are having issues with Sandisk and recommended the Lexar 633x card. I now have arranged a return on the Sandisk and will order that card, which is a pain! (If this is the case, no idea why they still have these cards recommended on their website?!)

I too am getting intermittent issues when the Card does work, in some cases it records fine and then it switches off! In other cases when I stop recording it comes up with a Camera Busy and hangs, then after switching it off/on comes with trying to repair the file and then I get the usual SD Card Error.

They did say, try it with Lexar card, and if the problem persists they will exchange it.

The Gopro apps and desktop eciting software is OK, but I prefer FCP. Gopro training app haven't used that either.

Quality wise, will need to test it outdoors, once I get the Cam to work properly!
Noddydog
1 Jan 17 #272
Thanks, that's useful. I'll return my Sandisk and get the Lexar. Hoping this resolves the issues for both of us.
