That's good. Just some questions regarding the Tab S2

What version of Android does it have?
What kind of Android overlay does it have?
At £369, what internal storage does it have?
What version of USB does it have?
How does the SoC compare to that on the Pixel C?
Speakers?
Resolution?
Battery?

They appear to have less than 10 of these 32GB versions in the whole of the UK. They are collect only, and worst of all, you will be dealing with PC World for any follow up service.

Superb! Thanks OP. Just ordered. I was going to get one from currys until they sent me on a wild goose chase saying there was 2 in stock at my local. Turned up and said there were no 64GB in the country and only a couple of 32GB which will probably be display models. 10/10

No problems. At £299, I was close to accepting the PC world experience to get this tablet. If I am not mistaken, this is one of two tablets that have an official build of Android 7.x on it. (The Nexus 9 being the other one).

You never can tell with Google and their tablet development. You'd think it'd be easy. One large tablet, one small tablet. Good specs, good screen. Annual refresh.

Galaxy Tab S2 is £299, same as the 32GB pixel C. Internal memory is not so important when it has an SD card slot.

12 Dec 16 2 #18

Nice dodge, but you are talking about an 8 inch tablet versus a 10.2 inch tablet. Internal storage for apps does matter. You will absolutely get performance issues by putting apps to SD.

I've got an Acer Chromebook and a Nexus 7 (2013) at the moment, both are struggling, Chromebook especially has become unreliable lately. Been thinking of upgrading one or the other, but this is best of both worlds! Quite like the MS Surface, but at £600 a bit too much, and it's not exactly lap friendly with that kickstand.

Need to take a proper look at a Pixel then decide.

sancheez
12 Dec 16 2 #27
Probably/Maybe.

But when? Long, long, long after the native Google devices.

This is why I've given up on Samsung. I have a Tab S. Which was their "flagship" tablet when I bought it. When I got it, it was running Lollipop (Samsung's awful implementation of it). It *finally* got Marshmallow a couple of months back. It got Marshmallow AFTER my Google phone (Nexus 6p) was already running Nougat. Flagship, my ar$e.

They are soooooooo slow it's laughable. If you want your OS kept up to date, Samsung are not the way forward. Which is a shame, cos the hardware is generally excellent.

What do you guys think about the Asus zenpad 3s 10 compared to the 32 gb model of the pixel C (if/when it becomes available at 300 pounds)
lucifon to Intensivist
12 Dec 16 #32
Just had a look into it and seems like a pretty solid tablet. Looks really nice aesthetically. The criticisms seem to stem from battery life and Asus' android skin. Also performance seems iffy at times. Really depends what you want from the device. I'd say if both devices were £300 the pixel c would be a significantly better buy for day to day usage with it getting the latest updates first, well optimised for Android (performance and battery life), and overall solid hardware. But if you NEED external storage then maybe another option. The C is also more of a horizontal usage device than vertical (obviously it can be used both ways but it's certainly designed more from a horizontal perspective).

No SD Storage sadly but 64gb should be pretty solid. Can pop a usb stick in if you're just wanting to view a movie from external storage or something like that temporarily.

£100 is a nice drop. The 32gb version is actually £20 more on Play store lol.

They've gone the Apple route with no MicroSD but at least android can easily access external drives. The reason I won't get one is there is no 4g version, which means I might as well just use a laptop if I have to rely on wifi.

Heat given nonetheless.

12 Dec 16 #37
I would love one of these but my Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 with CM14.1 (Nougat 7.1) is still running great. Also slightly annoying, looking at the Pixel C page, is that Google have reverted to modified soft keys at the bottom and a smaller status bar at the top in the landscape orientation. For many years I ran mods that put all the buttons and the status bar at the bottom to save screen real estate but this disappeared as Google seemed to want us to use tablets in portrait mode. That said I don't have this better option on my wife's Nexus 9 running stock 7.1.1.

Same here been after a tab S 8.4 or 10.5 with LTE but nowhere has them anymore. The prices of them on eBay are astronomical compared to what they sell for on private forums when they do pop up.

The Tab S2 doesn't seems worse, so Tab S owners probably see no reason to upgrade.

Apart from the Pixel C and Shield K1 (which is OOS everywhere at reasonable prices and it's a 32bit soc) are there any other tablets which have implemented the Vulkan API yet?

I'm looking for a gaming tablet (preferably around 8/9 inch) and would love to run some dolphin games, hence the vulkan requirement. It's a shame Nvidia scrapped the new shield tablet, I'd have snapped that up.
mcav to Andy4Shurr
13 Dec 16 1 #48
I am pretty sure those are the only ones. The Nexus 9 doesn't, even if you could find one. The only other devices that I know of are phones - Nexus 6P/5X Pixel Phones.

The Nexus 9 *should* have got the Vulkan API, but it didn't because of the recent Google A55 Whole Transformation.
Andy4Shurr
13 Dec 16 #49
Yeah the nexus 9 looks like it is being killed off by Google, shame really as it's still got some life in it.

I hadn't seen any others but I thought I'd see if anyone else knew different. The tablet market has gone a bit stale of late.

i never understand what people use 32gb of space on. photos, music and video are all stored in the cloud. and you'd need a fair few apps to consume all of that HD space, by which point you're probably due an app clear out anyway.
mikedefieslife
14 Dec 16 #52
Do you travel much? Music alone can easily eat up 32gb let alone films and tv shows and other entertainment. Fortunately with Android you can hook it up to an external drive but it's not ideal.

Even the UK a report was out showing we can only get 4g around 50% of the time in some countries it's worse. Not that it matters since there isn't an LTE version of this tablet, so you are reliant on WIFI. Good luck on the plane, train, anywhere in South America, anywhere in North Africa, of even just wales.

The point of these devices is to be portable. If you're sat at home with it you might as well have a laptop, which can do more, faster.
maltikism
14 Dec 16 #53
isn't the point of a laptop to also be portable?
why you'd want 32gb of music stored on your device at 1 time is beyond me. unless you're going travelling in the jungle and won't be going by anywhere that has a WiFi hotspot for 6 months straight. surely you can make a few albums available offline, from the cloud? if you want a music and video device with large storage, why buy a web enabled device that's built around cloud integration, and has an average battery life?

Managed to have a quick play with a Pixel and keyboard last night, turns out one of my mates bought one earlier this year as a "developer".

Very nice bit of kit, keyboard is good despite the small size, although it does not have square brackets [ and ] unless you switch to US layout.... strange for a developer setup. But that minor criticism aside, I did like it, superb high resolution screen and premium build. Tablet magnets work only in landscape mode, although the split screen feature now gives you side by side layout.

One other thing, it's USB C so you'll need an adapter if you want to plug in a USB flash drive.

I can't comment extensively on heat issues as mine had a dead pixel on arrival. It is already back in its box with a new one on its way. I can say that I had updated the software before noticing the dead pixel, and I experienced no heat at all from it even while it was in a case.
