Lowest I've seen it yet for the full size, 6gb version of this card.

£253.19 on Amazon currently for the same version (GV-N1060WF2OC-6GD)

Be aware that this version features 2 x DVI-D, 1 x Display port and 1x HDMI. This suits me as I have older, 1080p monitors but aware this isn't for everyone.

The 3 X DisplayPort version (GV-N1060D5-6GD) is currently sitting at £238.98, so a small saving to be made if 2 x DVI-D works for you.

If that RX 480 8GB for £210 is still on then that's a way better deal.

In most cases that's probably true, unless you've got an older CPU. I don't know if anythings changed lately, but Nvidia's drivers have always had less CPU overhead than AMD's. So if you're using older hardware then the 6 GB 1060 will probably perform better than AMD's offerings.

26 Dec 16 2 #3
Also if you're planning to put together a Steam Machine, or use Linux, as AMD cards still don't play well with anything that isn't Windows.

Or if you're putting together a low-power, low-heat build, in which case (no pun intended) a 1060 would also be far more suitable.

VRWorks is also now incorporated into the Unreal Engine, so I'd also expect this to ultimately be better for VR than a 480.

Otherwise, yes, dropping down to an 8GB 480 only loses a bit of performance, but does save £20, and should still include a copy of Civ 6.

Is this or the rx480 a worthwhile upgrade on a GTX 780?

26 Dec 16 #6
I need a bit of advice and this might be the place to ask.. Im looking to a buy a new graphics card to replace a GTX 760. Is this worth buying?

Ive noticed you can get a 3GB version on amazon for £188-£195, whats the difference?

I think I either have a i5 2500k OC or i5 3570k but im not sure if this needs updating or can handle a card of this calibre? I also have a 800w PSU and 8GB RAM. Advice from anyone on a suitable card would be greatly appreciated..although I have a preference to Nvidia as Im under the understanding that these are better compatible with intel cpus? (My PC knowledge is limited, converted console gamer from about 2 years ago)
vulcanproject to macleanie
26 Dec 16 1 #7
Yes this is twice as fast as a GTX760. No if you have either of those CPUs you aren't in desperate need of replacement, but an overclock probably wouldn't hurt.

Compatibility isn't an issue for any card and modern CPU. Nvidia is the market leader however for several reasons cited.

The difference between this and the 3GB version is this is much better for modern games since many can easily exceed 4GB of video memory usage. More memory can help smooth the experience a great deal.

This applies to your 8GB of RAM to a certain extent as well. 8GB of system RAM is edging towards the minimum required in some new titles. I have observed several games using all of that. Consider doubling it sooner rather than later, although this isn't critical.
fishmaster to macleanie
26 Dec 16 #18
The 3GB version is slower, as Nvidia thought that would be a cool feature. For this price it's a choice between the RX480 8GB and the GTX 1060 6GB. The GTX1060 6GB is a bit faster, the trump card (pun?) for the RX480 cards is they're a lot faster in DX12/Vulkan supported titles of which there's about 2 or 3 titles and will be more coming next year. I'd just buy whichever was the cheapest, if I had an old computer then I'd get the Nvidia as they appear to work better from the tests I've done.

Summary:

Buy the RX480 4GB or 8GB unless you have a rubbish CPU then get the Nvidia unless the CPU is really underpowered, then upgrade the whole system.

26 Dec 16 #8
Thank you so much. Will look to improve my RAM. I was edging towards the 3gb 1060 on recommendation but it seems with paying the extra £30 for this deal for a smoother game. I do play the latest releases at 1080p so I want something decent! That said my 760 did hold its own pretty well! Would you recommend picking this up or is a 970 better? 1070 is out of my price range. Would prefer not to exceed £250!
vulcanproject
26 Dec 16 #9
At 1080p a GTX1060 is the sweet spot for new cards. Best 1080p cards right now. It is pretty much twice as fast as a GTX760 at that resolution. If you got 35 frames before on a few games, you'll end up with 70 with the same settings with this.

Even at 1080p games can now easily use much more than 3GB of video memory. Absolutely worth the extra money especially going forward.

The reason why you should go for this over a GTX 970 is because it is a bit faster, it'll be quieter and cooler, uses considerably less electricity and has more video memory. All round it's a newer superior card and a much better buy for modern games.

Just for self assurance, will the rx470 be enough for 1080p gaming on max settings ? I don't see myself buying a new screen anytime soon hence went for the rx470 which is £70 cheaper...

I am sure you'll get back £50-60 on a GTX760 if you flog it on facebook, shpock, gumtree etc. Don't let it go for less than £50. You'll definitely get that.

Similar to the previous person, I've got a 760, but my CPU is an AMD FX 4300 which is a bit under powered. Should I bite or prioritise upgrading my cpu?
red_me765
26 Dec 16 #17
Yes i'm very tempted on this card, i'm running a older system now, built back in 2012.
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-GEN3 Intel
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB
Gainward GeForce GTX 570 Goes Like Hell 1280MB
As you see i have a older video card, would you think i'd be ok running the GTX 1060 on this old system, seeing my motherboard is only running at PCI express 2.0 and these newer cards are 3.0.
fishmaster to red_me765
26 Dec 16 1 #21
Yes this GTX 1060 will work in your system. The difference between PCI 2.0 and 3.0 is negligible. You don't need to upgrade anything apart from the GPU, and if you have 8GB RAM then having 16GB is useful for some of the latest titles. You could also upgrade to U1n(UEFI BIOS) although this is a beta BIOS. AN i7-2600K is good enough for any current titles, if you start to find it isn't then it should be an easy task to up the CPU frequency to 4.5GHz.

no reason to buy a GTX 1060 over an RX480 unless yiu own a gsync monitor

RX 480 is better value especially with the lastest relive drivers.

Freesync support (cheaper monitors compared to the gsync variants)
crossfire support ( 1060 doesn't even have sli)
and AMD cards age like fine wine, look at the 7970

as it stands

in DX11 both cards are neck and neck
in DX12 the RX 480 pulls ahead

a XFX GTR Rx480 8GB ( one of the best 480s) can be had from laptopsdirect for £225 with the which trial

also amd improved the DX11draw call efficiency with the lastest relive drivers so their cards should work better with older/weaker cpus

I have had a lot of both ATi/AMD and Nvidia cards and even to this day AMD tries hard to annoy me, the old cliche about their drivers persists for a reason.

The recent ones I have used this year caused crashes in Win 10 and constant Wattman warnings when NOTHING IS WRONG. This was on an old 7770 and on a 390X. Their game profiles updates are slow and support less games than special Nvidia gameworks features. CPU and memory management is poor considering they want you to pair it with their slower AMD processors.

In short Nvidia drivers and support are better and slicker, lasts for longer (7770 is considered 'legacy' and ended driver support by AMD like all pre-GCN cards despite only being 4 years old.) Nvidia performance across titles (especially) old and new is usually more stable and consistent. Nvidia just spend more on their driver team and support clearly. I could continue but for me this is a big deal.

Do I think AMD cards are crap? No I do not. Their price performance ratio is invariably superior to Nvidia products. However that isn't the whole deal when it comes to GPUs. Like buying the fastest car for the least money isn't always that smart, other factors incline me to Nvidia.

fishmaster
26 Dec 16 #32
You're nuts, I'm in no way ever a fan boy, you simply don't live on the same planet as me. So from my post you assume that I'm in favour of which brand ah yes you think I'm an AMD fanboy, that's insane. Also I disregard your post in every respect since you simply state I'm a fanboy without any scrap of evidence to support your insanity.

In reality at this present point in time you could buy either card and it wouldn't matter, so there you have it, you can buy either card, the RX480 is cheaper so that's why I said get the AMD, but wait a sec that makes me a fanboy, yes you're absolutely damn well correct I'm a fanboy of not paying more money than you need to, of course that makes me crazy, everyone should be paying more money out than they need, money grows on trees so why not splash out. I might be a fanboy of simple economics but I'm not an idiot adios amigo.
7800gtman
27 Dec 16 #33
The rx480 is far superior for new games being released thanks to dx12 and Vulcan. As it is also cheaper with similar dx11 performance it is pointless to spend more on the 1060 unless you are an nvidia fanboy. Its really this simple.

The real advantage of the GTX comes with its lower power and lower heat which also means lower noise. So most can just plug it in to their prebuilt machine without having to buy a new power supply, be concerned about extra ventilation, fan noise or extra running costs. All that's usually needed is a 6 pin power adaptor lead for a couple of quid off ebay.
And of course those who want a card for Adobe video editing there are the CUDA cores built into the GTX. Good deal the OP has found as well. Offered at about £216 via Flubit.

Good deal as purchased for £250 on amazon a week ago. Great card - upgraded from a 760.
dudedude
28 Dec 16 #39
I chose it because I had an AMD card before and the heat and noise is no good.

The fact is that Nvidia utterly destroy AMD on performance/watt. AMD generally wins performance/£, but after several years of use an extra few £ is kind of irrelevant.

Basically AMD always lose, but they just have better pricing.

I'm pleasantly pleased to find the DVI outputs on this card have audio pass through when connected to a TV with a DVI to HDMI lead. It's a quiet card, runs cool and overclocks well.
