While the government has "pledged" to fix the current rail ticketing disaster where you can end up paying more than double than you should be for a ticket, it may be a while before this actually happens. I came across this tool that allows you to search as you normally would for you tickets and it will search if it can be cheaper. Limited to five searches a day. Although the advertised way to purchase your split ticket is with Train Line it's cheaper to buy direct usually so you don't encounter booking fees. Hopefully this can help with the holiday travelling.

Yes it is always cheaper I agree, but this link is so limited, it only shows one train journey at a time so if like most looking for the best price you are flexible on the time you travel it would take an eternity to do that on this, the site I use shows trains either side of the time you enter and just scroll for more and then just check if it has changes and work it out from there :smile:

I use Split.traintimes.org.uk it doesn't do advance tickets, only on the day tickets but it'll tell you if it's cheaper to stick to one TOC for all or part of the journey. I.e. Manchester to Llandudno Junction it says it's £40, split at Chester comes to £39 but it also adds it's just £32 if one sticks to Virgin Trains for the entire journey.

Better versions of this around (like most MSE stuff tbh) that also let you look for return tickets.. their app version of this was also abandoned some time ago

I went to Sheffield from Edinburgh last week for a gig. Cheapest single I could get was £63. Used a ticket split site and got 3 tickets for a total of £32. Was also on the same trains I'd have been on if I'd bought the £63 ticket
