Got this in a Email, Its just one way and the routes are mostly to london area but it may help someone.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
You may be wondering why we are offering you car rental for 1 pound. You may think there is some kind of catch. But don’t worry, there is a logical reason behind our crazy offer!
Often we need to re-locate a vehicle, to be ready for the next rental or to return it to the manufacturer at the end of its lease.
Transporting the vehicle by truck is very expensive, so if you can bring the vehicle to where we need it, we charge you only 1 pound, and we both benefit!

Inspect it before you take it, make sure the existing.damage matches then photograph it when you return it and be sure to mention you took the photos when you return it. I usually use novacarhire they are a broker and need to get involved if there is a dispute. Always helps to have someone with experience dealing with the car rental companies

Rented from Europcar and Interrent once a fortnight for the last 18 months or so.
Never paid for the extra cover, never left a car back without getting it signed off, never paid a penny in damages.

Exactly this. Make sure you get the car checked and signed off there and then...otherwise damage may magically appear.

Simply go around the car in good light and take pictures of any scratches/damage etc use a finger or pen to give an idea of size next/alongside it.
The photo will be time stamped before you leave so just need to ensure time on paperwork when you leave is correct.
Use this for every car we check in or out at all our bodyshops saves us a fortune if people claim scratches or dents etc that arent related to the authorised work weren't there beforehand when they were.

Yes, your bank will gladly pay them and make you have an unauthorised overdraft on your card so it can change hefty interest from you and other fees as applicable.

You can buy excess insurance separately online for peanuts, but you need to have it in place before you book the car rental.

They don't recognise this and put a minimum hold on your credit card of about £1200 . Any damage is paid for by you upfront , then you have the nightmare of claiming it back . Been there done that .

I do this every time I hire. You can see the employees face drop as soon as I mention I have external cover.

Do you still need to pay the young driver surcharge with this? It says anyone over 21 is eligible but then gives the surcharge as an option.

Nah just hire a car from these for a normal holiday and don't take out the super all inc insurance .. Nightmare . Or drive over a cliff .. Make sure your life insurance is up to date .

Yes thanks mate, for revenge, I will hire a car for£1, pay £200 extra insurance, then drive their car off a cliff into the sea, that will teach them.

My method is to take out the super dooper all inc insurance then thrash the car . If you don't have the all singing insurance they scrutinise the car with a microscope . Pay the extra and they don't even look at it ... Changes the dynamic when you can horse the car , park anywhere etc etc . But it costs more than the car hire itself .

had that on a motorcycle.
They claimed I had thrown the bike down the road, despite their sheet stating the damage was already there.
They dropped it as a 'gesture of goodwill' but refused to return my deposit.
Took them to court, they ended up paying out of court the claimed amount (Deposit + fee + a couple of years interest)

Have rented a few vehicles over the years, Europcar the only ones to try and totally scam my credit card over fake damage after I returned the vehicle :disappointed: They seemed so cheap when I booked, but wow, so keen to claw back some profit

Looks to me like a cost cutting exercise. Lease hire companies employ staff to transport vehicles.
