is it not the case that photoshop contains all of lightrooms editing functionality (and more) and the real difference is the cataloguing?
as for the differences in editing within lightroom and dxo - they are pretty similar but imo lightroom is more complete this is free though
neither is more subtle than the other either - that depends on what sliders you mash more than the programs

Yes it is - this is different to photoshop, and is an image development package where as Photoshop is a pixel-level image editor. This is all about developing your image before you'd take it into PS, and is a replacement for Lightroom.
Note - this software is not 'better' than Lightroom, but will give your images a different feel - LR tends to give brighter, bouncier images while DXOP looks more muted & subtle. In the hands of a skilled user it is possible to replicate the LR look in DXOP and vice versa
