If you get this, get some Panasonic Eneloops. They don't lose their charge over time like other rechargables.

Does it do any harm to charge batteries fast, reduce their lifespan or retention?

Absolutely. It can seriously shorten the life of your batteries.
The trouble is you don't know what condition or capacity old rechargeable batteries are unless you use a smart charger ~£25.

The batteries are pretty poor (1300 mha for AA's) but the charger works fine, find a maplin or even the occasional lidl rechargeable battery offer and this should be a pretty good deal

Quite right, sell those 1300's on eBay and get some 2500 instead

I have a Duracell 1 hour charger. The batteries last about 1/3 as long as when i charge them in my 24 hour charger.
