*To get this price you need to order over the phone and ask for a price match, as the website still lists the higher price*

The Denon AVR-X2300W is currently £399 at Richer Sounds, but they advertise that they'll beat any lower price when notified.

Hifonix currently have the same model for £379 - https://www.hifonix.co.uk/detail/denon-avr-x2300w-black-7-2-channel-av-receiver-with-bluetooth-wi-fi

I rang Richer Sounds on 0333 900 0093 and notified them of the Hifonix price, they matched and then knocked off an extra £5 making it £374. This also makes 6 year supercare slightly cheaper too if you want to add that.

---

Fully loaded with the very latest audio and video technologies, the AVR-X2300W delivers incredibly immersive surround sound, optimised via extensive sound tuning – not to mention plenty of amplifi er power.

Key Features & Benefits

- 7.2 channel AV Receiver with 150W per channel: Enough power to fill medium size rooms with unique Denon sound
- Built-in WiFi with 2.4GHz/5GHz dual band support; built-in Bluetooth: Improved network stability especially in WiFi-crowded homes

ihotuk messaged me for some advice - but thought i'd dump it all here aswell for others.

First questions you’ve got to ask yourself with any speaker set is…

1. How big is my living room, basically how much space am I filling with sound
2. What kind of speaker do you want. Style? Bookshelf? Floor-standers?

MOST IMPORTANTLY. Goto the likes of Richersounds, ask them to setup the set in a demo room so you can hear it. Sound is such a subjective thing sometimes and these guys are happy to help you decide what you like best.

The first question will dictate to some degree the type of speaker you want, if you have a very large / gigantic living room then you’ll likely lean towards floorstanders / bookshelf style setup.

If however, like most people in the UK. It isn’t… Then it’s more a personal preference kind of thing. Now below I lean mean towards the style speakers, Monitor Audio or Dali will do you well at the “Big size” speaker side. Although you can get Q Acoustic floor standers to compliment a 2000 or 3000 series rear.

£100-£300?

My favourite (Mainly as my last 2 5.1 sets have been KEF) – I’ve been using KEF 3005SE set for a number of years. I’ve also had the T205 set (£1.5 flat slim speakers) previously which I loved. If my KEF 3005SE broke, i'd likely replace them with the KEF E305 or buy another second hand set of the 3005SE. For me personally, they're my perfect 5.1 set.

Also remember, you need speaker cable!

http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-cables/qed/micro/qed-micro

I go for QED Micro or Original personally.

Also plugs, Richersounds can normally put these on for you

http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-cables/cambridge-audio/4mm-banana-plugs/gale-4mmbanana-gd

Then also a sub cable

http://www.richersounds.com/product/hi-fi-interconnects/audioquest/black-lab-sub-cable-5m/qudi-bl-sub-5m

Another great thing - speakers don't really become obsolete now.. Once you have a great set - you've got a great set.

Purchased my Denon from Richer Sounds yesterday. Pulled in this deal when phoning them directly and they gave me a further £10 discount as I had a VIP voucher. Took out the 6 year extended warranty as they said if I don't make a claim I can have the money back!?!! Total price £405 - well happy!!

Na i get it mate, i think we're in agreement definitely. I just think some buyers could get a bit fixated on power output as an indication of a good or bad purchase - when in reality it's probably something that should be low on their list of priorities. Unless of course you got a big room for this and you're going all out

One day... ONE DAY... I will convince my wife to let me convert our garage into a cinema room.

I am not saying people wouldn't be happy buying a cheap AV, I am talking about a future purchase. Just because a demo sounds good doesn't mean in the future you won't maybe add 2 extra speakers, or buy new ones. I am only adding to your "should I buy a cheap AV" info, not competing against it.
spritey
30 Dec 16 #80
I think any issue with power output is likely to be identified with a demo, whack it up and see how comfortable you are with the sound levels. Given the typical sized living room in the U.K, i'd imagine most will be fine from an output perspective with even a £200-£300 AV Receiver.
rev6
30 Dec 16 #79
Yeah I see now, I missed that.

You were talking about the negatives of spending less, which is around £200, £300, not £399. I am saying if you do buy a cheap AV, you might need to upgrade it when you upgrade speakers, as we all get that upgrade bug. The X1300 to the X2300 for example is 70W difference which is quite substantial. The X2300 and X3300 are the same though.
spritey
30 Dec 16 #78
No i didn't, thats why i said amplification...

Again, this goes back to the original question though. Your living room size, i would argue that a £399 AV Receiver is going to be more than adequate for most people. I've had a pretty good living room size - i've never needed anything close to what my AV Receiver is rated at. A £200-£300 AV Receiver from an output perspective would also be the same, just lacks the features i want / need. Despite any advice people get on the internet about AV Receivers or Speakers, they should go demo them.
rev6
30 Dec 16 #77
You forgot less power for the speakers, not that at that price you'd be too worried. It just means the next speaker upgrade might also require a new AV.
spritey
30 Dec 16 1 #76
Another question i've had so dumping what i put on here;

Should i buy this or go for a cheaper AV Receiver?

You can get cheaper AV Receivers from the likes of Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo and Sony. Around the £200-£300 mark. You’re going to lose some stuff though;

- No DTS:X and Dolby Atmos (New Object based sound)
- No Wifi / Airplay
- Will be 5.1 and not 7.2
- Less HDMI ports and less HDMI 2.0 / HDCP 2.2 ports

While DTS:X and Dolby Atmos are new – you want to future proof as much as you can with an AV Receiver as you don’t want the fuss of replacing it. Sure you may not need it now but in the future you may want to add some more speakers, if you a step down in the range you're limited what you can do without replacing it.

I spent £350 on my first ever AV Receiver, glad I did. At the £200-£300 range you’re losing some great features, at the £350-£450 range you’re getting those features and above than in cost you’re typically only getting more zones, amplification and perhaps THX cert (I over simplify but the reason this gets such good reviews and AV Receivers around this price point often do, is they offer great value for money on top of allot of stuff inside).
spritey
30 Dec 16 #75
True you can spend less, think mine was around £20-£30 (It's a QED one). You don't want to buy a cheap £3-£5 sub cable, it's an analogue signal and you want something well shielded. Also depends on distance and where you want to place your sub, the position of your sub is quite important.

28 Dec 16 #65
When I started out in home audio around 9 years ago I had the same questions, you almost feel like "What? Wait? You want me to spend £300 on an AV Receiver and then £200 on speakers? Are you mad?"

Then when you do it, you get it... You get complete clarity of sound and bass, fantastic audio processing and all round next level experience when watching a movie or TV. Now I spend £400 on AV Receivers typically and my speakers with wire cost around £1000-£1200... I'd view them as a mid end setup...

Took me a while to convince my parents of the same, they'd come round our house and love it but without that direct comparison especially in your own environment you don't appreciate it... Now they'd never go back. Their AV Receiver stopped working one day, you'd think they'd just use the TV sound until they got it sorted? Nope, they felt the loss of that sound made it impossible for them to enjoy TV / Movies. So didn't watch anything till they got it sorted.

I have some onkyo 5.1's but think they are bust as I have moved house with them 4 times and have been dropped a few times! The sub on the onkyo is massive and the wife hates it and won't allow it in the lounge due to its size and ugliness. I don't want to spend too much on the speakers but then I want a set which will justify spending this much on an amp so the best budget speakers with a smaller sub perhaps £200ish

Hot! Have a 4100w with Monitor Audio Silvers, and its incredible. Far better than my old Onkyo TXNR 626. wasn't impressed with the Onkyo at all, sound was too harsh, surround didn't have as good as depth as my old Yamaha either, ran stupid hot, had to get repaired once where it started smoking! Also ordered this from RS today, can't go wrong with this AV Receiver tbh. I already had £25 off though as they did a deal, so couldn't get them to return more with price match. Worth a try I guess.

Just ordered mine from Hifonix. Not worth faffing around for a fiver, reviews check out 5 star.

I think the attraction is really in the cheap 6 yr warranty, but I know what you mean.

Soooo tempted. Not sure how much better it is over my x2000 though, but nearly bought it at 399 on Black Friday... I suspect if it was an online link I'd have bought it by now... talking to a real person always puts me off...

I'm looking for a new amp, seriously tempted by this to replace an old Yamaha! Can anyone suggest any decent alternatives for similar price otherwise I might just take the plunge! How did you get the extra £5 off?

Richer Sounds will give the extra £5 off automatically as they give up to £100 extra depending on the size of the price match.

My Onkyo still works great also - a bit disappointed at having to upgrade myself but the Onkyo had no support for 4K - the Denon at least looks fairly future proof with 4K/HDR/HDCP 2.2 on all HDMI inputs, Dolby Atmos and WiFi.
