Curve, the virtual credit / debit card that has already launched on iOS has finally launched out of private Beta on Android.
After signing up to a free Curve card, you can assign your other cards to it and switch between them at will, paying via conventional means or contactless. It works incredibly well and is a great way of keeping track of transactions etc. Purchase notifications are pushed to your phone instantly, email receipts can be switched on and receipt image capture, currently on iOS, will be coming to the Android app in the future. No Android Pay support as yet, I hope this comes at some point!
The card itself (the entry level 'Blue' version) was previously paid for, but it is now free for a limited time. A 'Black' version is also available which will offer a higher cashback rate in the future as is a black version with an included card wallet.
As well as the cards you load on the app, a built in reward card is included. This is empty on a normal signup, but if you sign up with the code 'VIOMM' (NOT my code mods, can provide evidence if required) then you will be credited with £5 the first time you use the card. For each friend you refer, you will get £5 also. Pretty great really.
There are some useful value add features I've enjoyed in the time I've had it on iOS, such as the ability to withdraw cash against credit cards with no fee (as the CC just sees it as a regular transaction) and the excellent foreign exchange rates. I used it abroad and got better rates than my Fair FX card!

Monzo is cool, but also completely different. I like Curve because it integrates with all the banking services I use already, but makes them better. I don't really want to switch banks, top up Monzo, etc. etc.

I've been using Curve a while, literally the only thing that I don't like is the fact you can't add what are effectively pre-paid cards (including my PayPal debit card) and the fact it is a pre-paid card itself (which stops it working in French petrol pumps!). Oh, and that they aren't supporting Amex at the moment, although I have it on good authority discussions are underway to make this happen!

I'm struggling to see value in Curve anymore. Previously when it integrated with American Express & allowed you to withdraw cash without very low caps, it was useful.
The only use for it now that I can see is to put all of my cards into one place, but I keep seeing major outages. I've started carrying around another card so I don't get caught out with a down curve card, which to me defeats the purpose of having it.
Tempted to ditch Curve now.

I asked them about this recently - I'm also an Amex user - and I have a feeling it'll be back. Customer experience is important to Amex and if Curve can deliver, I think there's a future.

My Barclays cards don't support Pay. Pay doesn't let me withdraw cash free from credit cards. Pay doesn't give me cheap foreign exchange.

This card can be used in Android Pay.
From what I understand from skimming over the front page, Curve connects to all your other cards which is handy if you've cards that aren't accepted everywhere. They also offer 'low' exchange fees.
Personally, I'm signing up because they also offer cashback (and because free £5!!).

Anyone actually got any cashback from this? They say they have about 50 retail partners but cannot find a list. Anyone knows what shops give you cashback using curve?

Curve don't do cashback specifically, you can sign up for the rewards program, but that is not active. Any cashback you receive on your usual cards will still come through though...

Like Paul, I've been using the beta on Android for a while, its pretty stable and actually makes using curve make sense. If you only use Curve for expenses, makes tracking your expenses really easy!

That's what I have. This card will use the Mastercard wholesale exchange rate I presume, as does Supercard, so Supercard appears better for POS transactions

Hi Paul thanks for your help a few questions these may sound stupid but if the card is lost what happens? Also do you have one pin number or separate pin for each card? What happens about the pin (s) also regarding using card abroad do you get 2 charges 1% and then my original card rate as well or will I just get billed in gbp and then 1 % on my curve if that's makes sense. You can turn the card on and off in the app. The pin is across all cards. Each foreign currency purchase is just one transaction, as you'd expect.

(1) So Curve (app) will in essence know all the 3 digit codes (at the back) of all cards?
(2) Do they run a credit check on you?
(3) If no credit check then whats the approval process ie do you have to send copies of Passport, D/Lic, proof of address or biometric etc?
(4) Do you have to send documentary proof of being self-employed or an Entrepreneur?

Unless anyone has actually received explicit direct confirmation from Curve, it looks like they DO hold the CVV (presumably, they are circumventing the regulations as they are a financial product provider rather than an e-commerce retailer)
If so, it is only a matter of time before they are targeted. I think I'll give this one a miss, but thanks to the OP for making us aware of this deal.

Got my card today verified my bank card and phone number.
But could not activate the Curve card as it was still showing pending.
The faq said to log out and then back in but this just sends an email link which then starts the sign up process again in the app no option to enter a pin.
Not impressed so far with google pay I just took a picture of my card and was up and running in mins.
Now locked out of the app with a Curve card I cannot use.

very good point - that's likely how they getting around not falling foul of the regs and if that's the case (as in a Financial product & not e-commerce retailer), then users of Curve may also be stretching to say the least, their end of their contractual responsibility re use of their cards with their banks/credit card providers.

A very reassuring reply from Curve re: the CVV:
"As prescribed by the PCI-DSS regulation, we do not keep the cards CVV in our database. For us, keeping our users' details (cards and personal) safe is hugely important so we only store the minimum we need. CVV is used only on card registration at which point we tokenise the card details. It is that token we use to make transactions on the card and which makes it possible for us not to store that sensitive information."

I am not sure that I am reassured. So they save the data as a "token".
What is a token? Does this token stay within my phone, or with Curve?
How is the token unecrypted, is at the point of sale?
Who else can unencrypt the token?
If it is compromised, who is responsible for any losses?
Also I take issue with the word tokenise!
The fact that I need to go through support to get the answers has meant that I am out, they are fired!

From what i understand from that documentation - tokenisation makes data like CVV safer to store on infrastructures that are actually responsible for the day-to-day transactions ie the actual buying/paying transactions with the difference credit/debit cards stored within Curve, but do not altogether take away the vulnerability of collecting & storing such data...as the CVV still has to be stored 'offsite-location' somewhere and so hacker will not target the payments-side infrastructures of Curve that uses tokenisation, they will target where the data is store offsite-location instead....so the vulnerability still exists unfortunately.

"Meanwhile, their customers’ real card data is stored at a highly secure, offsite location"
translation for the layman = yes it may not be within the app ie on the phones/devices but it is stored by Curve someplace (offsite-location). :stuck_out_tongue:

CPT 500 = £5. Tap it and it'll change the display to pounds. You can now make a contactless or chip and pin transaction of up to that amount by ensuring the 'reward' card is selected before you pay.

I applied and got the card within 3 days,all activated. Very good service so far.
I have a concern that it displays the pin number on the mobile app. I think this is a serious security risk if the phone is stolen or hacked. More over certain banks like HSBC got online fraud prevention by monitoring the usage of the card and cancel the suspected transactions. This may not work for Curve card as HSBC may only see all the transactions as from Curve. I am not sure ho much fraud protection system Curve has.

If you are linking credit cards etc to curve, this would presumably invalidate any protection you have with the credit card company under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 for transactions over £100?

So, you would probably be far safer using your usual credit card instead of curve for transactions over £100 - as Section 75 protection is far greater than a standard charge-back (s75 makes the credit card company jointly liable with the trader or retailer, so s75 claims are almost always successful. In contrast, charge-backs are discretionary.)

a friend who decided to get Curve cant seem to be able to set a app passcode or get past setting up an app passcode within the app, he says he has successfully verified his added card and his phone number but says after entering a 4 digit passcode nothing happens, it just stays there.
He also recved his Curve card in 3 days over the Holiday.

Paul (OP) as a very well respected tech blogger (in the Android world) and suspect its a code from Curve direct. Besides, you could use anyone's referral code and you both get £5. If you choose not to use it, neither party gets the £5.

The faq said to log out and then back in but this just sends an email link which then starts the sign up process again in the app no option to enter a pin.
Not impressed so far with google pay I just took a picture of my card and was up and running in mins.
Now locked out of the app with a Curve card I cannot use.
Anyone else had this problem? I have sent them an email.

CVV is used only on card registration at which point we tokenise the card details. What is a token? Does this token stay within my phone, or with Curve?
How is the token unecrypted, is at the point of sale?
Who else can unencrypt the token?
If it is compromised, who is responsible for any losses?
Also I take issue with the word tokenise!
The fact that I need to go through support to get the answers has meant that I am out, they are fired!
(I don't use apple/android pay).

but...from what i understand from that documentation - tokenisation makes data like CVV safer to store on infrastructures that are actually responsible for the day-to-day transactions ie the actual buying/paying transactions with the difference credit/debit cards stored within Curve, but do not altogether take away the vulnerability of collecting & storing such data...as the CVV still has to be stored 'offsite-location' somewhere and so hacker will not target the payments-side infrastructures of Curve that uses tokenisation, they will target where the data is store offsite-location instead....so the vulnerability still exists unfortunately.

translation for the layman = yes it may not be within the app ie on the phones/devices but it is stored by Curve someplace (offsite-location). :stuck_out_tongue:
I have tweeted them asking them to reply to all the concerns raised here.
Edit it's over £500 a month, that's why I guess, I just used card chip and pin instore as much as possible to not hit that limit

2/ Is it possible to add a card that is registered to different address
I have a concern that it displays the pin number on the mobile app. I think this is a serious security risk if the phone is stolen or hacked. More over certain banks like HSBC got online fraud prevention by monitoring the usage of the card and cancel the suspected transactions. This may not work for Curve card as HSBC may only see all the transactions as from Curve. I am not sure ho much fraud protection system Curve has.
If you are linking credit cards etc to curve, this would presumably invalidate any protection you have with the credit card company under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 for transactions over £100?
So, you would probably be far safer using your usual credit card instead of curve for transactions over £100 - as Section 75 protection is far greater than a standard charge-back (s75 makes the credit card company jointly liable with the trader or retailer, so s75 claims are almost always successful. In contrast, charge-backs are discretionary.)
