Anyone not using an SSD for their main drive should be considered a threat to society, SSD's have been around for years now and at reasonable prices, those that grumble about not needing an SSD should be approached with caution or not at all, sadly it's too late for many but if they're willing to make the life change they'll immedietly become a convert and preach the good news. Luckily many of us took the leap of faith 5 years ago and have never looked back.

Anyone know if this is any good for a late 2009 21.5 mac?

Apples specs say yes. From memory apple only started using non-standard harddrives in their laptops after the 2012 mac pro (the last one with a DVD drive) https://support.apple.com/kb/sp576?locale=en_GB

Should be ok. If you go on to their web site it tells you about compatability. I fitted a MX300 about a month ago to my 2009 macbook pro. Has changed my life!!

any good for a late 2009 21.5" imac?
I'm sure I've heard something about a thermal connection required otherwise the fans constantly spin at full speed.

If you're a gamer, which many of you I bet will be, don't focus too much on comparing SATA3 SSD speeds between themselves. Like this vs a Samsung Evo.
It'll make very very little difference, if any that's even noticeable at all. Just get a reliable SATA3 drive and play your games.

Anyone thinking of changing a HDD for an SSD and not sure if it is worth it, I would say definitely do it.
I had a laptop I found a real pain to use, so hardly used, until I did the swap last week and now it's probably my favourite way to browse, etc. Everything becomes almost instantaneous, such a big improvement.

How does it compare to the 850 evo?
gowf
26 Dec 16#16
One important note is that this is based on crucial's older 2D NAND technology whereas the MX300 in crucial's range is based on the 3D NAND, which is what samsungs latest Evo 850 range is based on. Theoretically 3D is more reliable because charge is less likely to dissipate from NAND cells.
