Citizen and Seiko make quality watches and provide great value. I would stay clear of these Armani, Boss, Etc designer branded watches they are just plain junk.
Always go for sapphire crystal. Citizen eco drive is a great movement as is Seiko kinetic.

I have this watch with the black steel strap.
It is a brilliant watch. Scratch proof screen and never drops a second. Certainly worth it at this price.

Lovely looking watch. Really tempted! Trying to look for the black steel strap version but can't seem to find anything that is exactly the same but in black.
Found a Citizen CA0295-58E but it doesn't look as nice IMO.
This is a great watch, with built in radio controller so you never need to adjust time as it updates itself every night. Only thing I'd say is for the same money you can pick up an entry level Tissot or Hamilton. But if you don't care about brand name then this one here ticks all the boxes.

HOT. Great price for a great watch. I own the blue dialled version, accurate to the second, thanks to radio controlled time signal that the watch gets everyday at 2 am. I doubt you'll find another watch with similar specifications and quality at this price. I would highly recommend this watch to anyone
The only down side is that 4 of the 5 timezones are preset to USA timezones.

Thanks for the heads up on this, ordered. Came across it at EJ earlier in the week via PriceSpy comparison web site but was dissapointed as showing out of stock. At £170 I assumed it was a final clearance offer so certainly didn't expect it to be up for grabs again. Got the blue face version from Goldsmiths when it was on offer a while back, very happy to get the black also.

This is a very nice watch, I have a couple of Eco Drives, one is the black version of this. I was looking for a cheaper everyday watch, one I did not need to bother about but at this price with the RC feature it is too good to miss. Citizens are good but you can tell this is in the next bracket over the sub £100 Eco Drives just by the feel. I just returned one to Argos because of that.

Seriously, that's like watching a scrambled TV channel.
A good watch has clearly defined hands which stand out from the rest of the fascia. The hands on this just blend in with the rest of the dials, what a mess

Watch designs tend to follow trends. There are many examples of skeleton watches that lack a watch face so you can see the inner workings of the movement. However I find them terrible to look at.

With respect that's a fairly pointless comment. The design won't suit many I am sure, but to state what constitutes a 'good' watch is a bit arrogant of you. As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

To each their own. Great features on this watch.
What puts me off more is the reputation of Ernest Jones on here and the Internet as a whole.
Anyone actually bought from them and what's your experience been like?
Benno1uk
29 Dec 16#20
When you see watches like this which are 100% accurate and never need battery change / servicing, it does make me wonder why people buy watches such as Rolex /Omega etc for upwards of £5000. I get that they are beautifully made and automatic, but they must be charging at least 10 times what they cost to make and they are less accurate and need servicing every few years (at a cost of £600 or so).
UhNope to Benno1uk

Why do people spend £000s to hire a beach house in Malibu for a couple of weeks when they could just go to butlins for £200?
No idea either mate
I'm not sure you're serious? But this citizen is a proper watch. The boss one is just a cheap watch with a 'brand' attached to it. This will hold its value, the boss won't. This will continue to work in 10 years, the boss will be landfill
rimalpatel007
29 Dec 16#24
Thanks for your comment it was really helpful. I'm on a hunt for a new watch, I was really close to purchasing the Boss watch up until I came across this thread. I've only owned Armani watches ranging from £100 to £400 and never owned Citizen brand or now much about it. Are Citizen a designer brand, and what's so good about this brand compared to others?
That one requires manual time setting. I was not keep either. Saw it in town yesterday. Cheaper at Amazon.

30 Dec 161#33
That's not the black variant on the link you provided, it's an inferior model altogether. Not radio controlled time keeping and mineral glass on the face as opposed to the superior sapphire, the Ernest Jones offering is a far superior Citizen.
chrisbenwalker
29 Dec 16#26
Another member here if not sure if you're serious. If this really is a serious question, do a bit of reading on citizen and eco drives. I've had an eco drive for years and best watch I've owned. NOT a designer brand, it's a proper watch brand. And the difference between this and a designer brand, is night and day.

this is a cracking watch. I have ordered it last night. Thank you OP. I have been looking for the watch for over an year to get it on a low price. You can't get a radio controlled, 200 WE, Sapphire glass watch for anywhere lower than this price brand new. The other watch I bought from H Samuel last week for 90£ is going back tomorrow. That was a cracking watch too but simply just not good enough to beat this watch.

For anyone who might be interested this Citizen Royal Marines watch is also a great offer from EJ. Until recently never ever seen reduced from £299 anywhere. Not to my taste really but considering the body is made from ion plated titanium, ultra thick Sapphire glass (2.5mm) and fitted with a very tough Kevlar strap that's a heck of a lot of watch for £135. Next cheapest around £240 with many outlets asking much more. https://www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/d/2829541/citizen+royal+marines+commandos+men%27s+strap+watch/?cmCat=OVM

I like military style watches - I have a Seiko 5 although the face of this one is quite a bit bigger - so I went to the nearest Ernest Jones to have a look. They only had the £349 Limited Edition version of the Marines watch with a bracelet, larger face, and without the Arabic numerals. Nevertheless I was impressed enough by the Citizen watches they had in stock to go ahead and order the watch you've linked to. £135, for Solar, Sapphire and Titanium seems great value.

I was probably very lucky.

Appears now in stock again, although the unit i ordered on Thursday evening is still pending according to customer service as now items in stock. So take your chances ... just don't take my unit :-)
I received mine yesterday. Haven't read the instructions yet as it isn't just a simple watch that I'd thought it would be so need to do so to get it up and running. Looks very nice and amazing quality though! Normally buy Seiko but very pleased with this one.

Citizens web site gives full details on settings in video form which I much prefer doing rather than picking through instruction hand books, the movement caliber of this watch is E650, enter that into search box and view the vid, it pauses at each step of the full set up procedure for you to set away again when you're ready to continue. As always with most things, being shown what to do is easier than reading sometimes confusing written instructions. http://www.citizenwatch.com/en-uk/support/setting-instructions/

Okay perhaps I spoke too soon, I looked at reviews etc and read the manual and I can see the watch is just meant to work whereas mine does not do anything. I've popped it on my windowsill facing the sun now with the crown pulled out hoping that it just needs some charge for it to start working.

Mine worked fine, didn't need any charge. I guess it's because it was the unit in store and was charged by absorbing the light in store.

I received my one of these yesterday, so it only took a day to deliver. It's a really nice watch. One other thing; I took it into an Ernest Jones shop (Welwyn) and they resized the bracelet for free in case anyone was wondering about that. My watch came working out of the box - I set it up from scratch using a video tutorial I found on YouTube (the wrong instruction book was included with the watch!). For those worrying their watch it dead, I think this may be normal as the watch takes time to recharge it's battery. I have a slight suspicion my watch was a display / return model, but for £170 I ain't complaining.

I think it still needs more charge, put it in chrono mode and pull the crown out to charge in the light. It is trying to run but insufficient power, they click in that scenario.

I believe they charge in any light too, not just sunlight so maybe leave next to a lamp as there is basically no sunlight today!

I've pulled it out so that it's on the second notch (furthest out). I'll try leave it there till Tuesday when I'm back at work but it doesn't look like there's any sun today anyway. :disappointed: Might have to just use a lamp as TheDobbus suggests!

Put it in the sun today and then I noticed that after a few hours the second hand was ticking and then left it there longer till sunset. I then followed all the steps in the video to set it up (well I didn't set up alarm and I started with the zero resetting before setting the time) and needless to say I'm a happy customer!
Checked the charge and it's midway in the grey zone now so that's good too!

Mine is still on the way but has been dispatched. For anyone waiting for theirs or who wants a brief overview I just found this video. It starts to wane a little but the reviewer is quite eloquent compared to some. I already have one and fully agree with his comments about quality and comfort.
Just out of interest does anyone have a recommendation for a nice leather strap to go with this watch? I like the steel bracelet but would also like to wear it with a leather strap occasionally.
