Standard O2 refresh trick means a 'buy-out' payment of £144 plus £9.99 initially. Cheapest I could find at the moment for a brand new iPhone 5s.

Step by step guide for this deal

1) Follow the get deal button and purchase the phone

2) Receive your phone and sim card.

3) Put the sim card into your phone and go onto myO2 (app or website) and from there request the unlock code.

4) Call 202 from the same sim card as it will make things much easier, go straight to the I want to leave o2 department or something like that (I think it's thinking of leaving us? Press something) as that will connect you with the right people much quicker.

5) Tell the person you want to pay your device in full and cancel the airtime. They will ask you why, tell them you don't think the airtime is a good value for money, but you want to keep the phone because you think it's an outstanding value for money. They will ask you for card details, you tell those details and that's it, they cancel it for you in about an hour.

6) You own the phone from that point, assumed that you have done this straightaway, there won't be any charges, otherwise you will have to pay as much airtime as you have used.

7) Unlock code will come through in about 2 to 48 hours.

I have tried O2 refresh once and probably won't try it again. I did everything within the cooling off period, paid for the device and cancelled the airtime. Ended up being sent a bill for the full airtime charge and 2 months direct debit charges. It took over 20 calls to get the airtime charges lifted off my account and I am yet to have my direct debit reversed. Great deal if it works for you with no hiccup. But when it doesn't, a very messy situation.

Can someone help me please?! This is working out £177.99 for me? How do I get it at £153.99?!

Bought a gold one on Thursday for my daughter. ordered at 22:20, received text following morning saying it will be delivered between 09:04 and 10:04. could not believe how quick it was despatched.

Dialed 202 from phone, spoken to o2 customer services and paid the device off. they asked could they do anything else and I explained that I was going to unlock and put her old sim back in the phone. she currently gets 4 gb for £10.00 from virgin. O2 offered me 4gb for £11:00.

I declined their offer and they said that they will disconnect the contract after 10 days, Within 24 hours I received a message asking me to insert a new sim and then connect to iTunes. Kudos to O2. no issues at all with thus deal.

Either way you end up paying £153.99 for the phone if you want to avoid paying monthly airtime. You can pay £9 at the time of order and then pay the £144.99 outstanding handset balance (£153.99 total) to cancel the airtime contract. Alternatively to avoid another CCA pay £153.99 at the time of order and cancel the airtime within the 14 day cooling off period. I did the later and got a £10 credit from O2 because it tried to bill me incorrectly. So the phone ended up costing me less than £145 after the account was closed and O2 bank transferred to £10 credit back.

Remember to get O2 to unlock the phone for free before cancelling the airtime otherwise it will be locked to O2 and probably cost you money to get it unlocked. Also make sure you cancel the DD straight away to avoid erroneous O2 billing.

is this still available? I can't see a £144 up front deal on the page. There are £153.99 deals in the 'pay for your device in full' section though. Would the cancellation thing work with these?

Surpremo you pay £9 when you sign up to the deal and then the next day you pay the £144 to pay the handset off + you ask for the airtime contract to be cancelled.

I got this deal, and asked for the unlock code the day I got it (after making a call). I then rang CS the day after to ask and waited three days, then they told me it hadn't been used on the network so couldn't unlock it. Thats the perpetual problem I currently have. O2 are useless at codes, and why they still lock handsets in this day and age I don't know.Anyway two more requests saying its not been registered failed, even though I always ring CS on the phone/sim i got, but still they deny it. Its put my whole family off O2 and I am only doing this for the cheap handset. Next time I will think twice...

You can get a iPhone SE for £221 on the refresh contract. I bought my daughter the iphone 5S on the 20th of December, went into the shop the 21st of December and paid the phone off + asked for the airtime to be cancelled. I was assured that was it, but on the 4th of Jan £9 was taken from my account. Live chat agreed it was an error and will refund and would send me a copy of the chat transcript, not had the money or transcript but that was only last Thursday so hopefully its all sorted now. I hadn't cancelled my DD because of what someone said about it affecting your credit rating if you cancel it and they try and take it in error?

You need to click on one of the tariffs to see the cost of the phone, then follow. The cancellation process and pay off the device. Process is probably on the first page. To be honest though, I would look at an SE refurbed like new for £220 I think it was will last much longer.

I'm on my 2nd refresh deal with o2 (the ordering cancelling contract scenario) i'm not adverse to jumping through hoops to get something cheaper but o2 really are a pain in the ****, i've been charged the full airtime balance £342 even though i queried and got the charge reversed (wasn't told to cancel DD, i kept that open because I thought if I cancelled it they wouldn't be able to refund the £18 they'd already taken) I'm now waiting for my unlocking code on the 2nd phone i've had to request this twice.

You can get some good deals using this method but be prepared for o2 being crap and plenty of phone calls trying to sort it out.

Value for money is subjective. For me value for money is about an experience as a whole and not just about a cursory comparison of two spec sheets. I've bought countless phones over the years - I'm part of a rather keen phone-geek community - and the one that has always offered me the best experience in terms of reliability, after-sales hardware support, updates, compatibility with other services my family use and choice of peripherals has always been the iPhone.

Now I know it isn't for everyone and that some people prefer Android for its 'flexibility' and choice of hardware; but for me this choice, and the constant need for manufacturers to churn out new devices to keep customers' interest, gives me a sense that whatever Android I buy will be forgotten and unloved after a year.

The way I see it, if an iPhone suits someone best and they can afford to buy it then it is good value for money. If an Android device is far cheaper - as with my P9 - it doesn't make it better value for money in my opinion, since I haven't enjoyed using it nearly as much.

I use my phone more than any other device, so I'm not interested in buying the cheapest one; I'm interested in buying the one that suits me best.

Fair enough. But which is better value for money? My sole reason for disliking apple products is the extreme pricing. Maybe I'd be a convert if I try one. But I don't have that luxury. P9 Vs iPhone is a fair comparison as I believe apple and huawei have similar layouts because huawei is basically a cheap apple.

Best to cancel the direct debit before the date O2 will attempt payment. Usually O2 take the DD around 14 days after the bill date and this should be shown on your bills. If you leave it to O2 to tell you to cancel the DD then you're wide open to its mistakes and left trying to get your money back. I cancelled DD as soon as it was setup and visible in my bank account.

Once O2 present a "correct" final bill for 88p I will pay it via card but if I'd left the DD active O2 would have already taken £9 and according to the my "final" bill today it's planning to take a further £171 in 14 days LOL. I think not.

I did delete the direct debit only after they told me it is okay to do so. The direct debited my account two times within one month i.e: they charged the full monthly charge the very day I received and activated the sim to get an unlock code and another charge in a month's time, which was ridiculous!

As the owner of an Huawei P9 and an iPhone 7, if I had to return one and get a full refund it would be the £192 P9 rather than the £600 iPhone 7 because for me the experience is better and more reliable.

The thing is they were pretty good on reversing the termination fee and it showed up 3 days as promised on my online bill.l just wish they had a system where departments talk to each other so we wouldn't have these problems.

22 Dec 16 #65
Yup O2 is very poor in this respect and I would never use it beyond getting a deal.

When I purchased the phone I assumed O2 billing was going to be problematic and it would attempt to take DD payments even when the contract was cancelled. Hence cancelling the DD at the same time as the airtime, informing O2 of this in writing and the reason I use live chat to keep transcripts of how poor O2 is in terms of doing what it says.

If the bill isn't cleared within 3 working days as stated by O2 I'll raise a formal written complaint with O2 and if it fails to resolve the issue after 8 weeks I'll use the Ombudsman Services to seek resolution which is a cost to O2.

In the meantime I've been told in writing by O2 to cancel my DD and that I don't owe anything. Equally O2 has been unable to take any money in error from me by DD due to it already being cancelled.

I'm not full of hate... Better quality apps? Snapchat is snapchat, Skype is Skype, facebook is facebook etc. etc. Admittedly the apple App Store is more "refined" but there is a lot less choice. And good for iMessage? Any modern phone has a good message service refined for that particular phone. Sending photos, videos, emojis is not limited to iMessage.
The only thing I envy apple users for at the moment is Super Mario Run.
I think that iPhone are very nice, I just think that people buy them without actually knowing why sometimes. My sister recently bought a google pixel. I think she was silly to do that to be honest. The iPhone 7 is a better phone than the pixel. The only advantage pixel has over iPhone is marginally better camera.

Had the same situation but still got a email a day after DD was due saying I still owe them, if not paid in 4 days they will add charges to my bill.So called o2 and again told I owe nothing.Btw if I didn't cancel my DD (live chat adviced) they would of took the 'early termination fee' after being told multiple times they wouldn't!!!
Most people reading this probably think I didn't follow the rules doing this sort of deals but I followed it to the letter 110% and still got all this **** , not worth the hassle.
joeluken
22 Dec 16 #62
Just an update I received my "final" bill today from O2 which was for £171 airtime !! I contacted O2 via live chat and was told its automated billing system had added an early termination fee in error because its system shows cancellation within the cooling off period. The agent confirmed the total amount will be waived and the account credited within 3 working days. I was also instructed to cancel my direct debit which I already did when I cancelled the airtime. I always request a transcript from live chat.

It's clear O2's systems are pants either by design to take money it is not owed by DD or just poor. The moral is ensure any associated DD is cancelled and O2 is informed of this in writing i.e. live chat to avoid your money being taken and having to depend on O2 to refund. Also always request live chat transcripts for future reference.

Good luck !

I think the key is the device being recognised as active when O2 tries to process the unlatching request. It appears to take around 24 hours for the bit of O2's system that does this to see the activation and confirm it's still live.

Already tried this last week and went on as mentioned in the post.

However few points to note / remember:

There are 2 options on the website:
1) Either pay the device in full. Once you receive the handset, unlock it and then request for a airtime cancellation.

2) Just pay £9 as mentioned, once you receive the handset then pay entirely for the handset and then request for air time cancellation.

I opted for 1) however beware that the customer advisor was very reluctant to accept the cancellation through this option. He said the cancellation is possible only via option 2. However after arguing and negotiation I finally managed to get things sorted.

Thought of sharing as this would help anyone interested.

"Mines gone completely wrong!!!!
1. Got phone
2. Made a call using sim on phone to my other mobile (30-second call)
3. Placed request for unlock
4. Called and cancelled airtime and paid off phone.
5. Got a text saying cannot unlock as phone has not been used on network!!!!!!!

Sims now been turned off so cannot make another call, customer service say they can't unlock as not been used on their network even though the phone shows a call made and I got a call received on another mobile!!

So looks like phone is locked on o2 so going to have to return under 14-day cooling off period! And order again! Complete waste of everyone's time!"

No I couldn't do the unlock bit first as I had to go in store this morning, I struggle with my hearing, so they helped me in store to speak to the call centre. I'm hoping its all as I can see the device is paid off on my account but the airtime bit is still there, but the lady on the phone said her manager would action that today.

Did you get the unlock confirmation email before cancelling ? Just wondered because I'd read on another deal that the person requested the unlock and then cancelled straight away. Got an email back from the unlock request about not being able to unlock because of cancellation. May be worth checking.

Also beware of O2 taking out airtime by direct debit even though the airtime is cancelled. I cancelled the DD and know O2 tried to take it today lol.

There has been lots of discussion in the past about iPhones only locking on the apple data base when the first sim is activated and lots of people about 6 months ago bought iPhones and used the three sim to "lock" it to three which means it doesn't actually lock. This has to have changed from what has been said here or something must have changed which is what my rely was about, if nothing has changed then there are lots and lots of people who have been lucky enough to get an already unlocked phone from o2. Either way I deleted my original comment and the one you were replying to was a reply to those that corrected me, so no need for further discussion On that one

Stuck between a rock and a hard place!
Technology just doesn't let you keep what you're happy with it moves on and prevents you from staying the same.

Bought mine in 2014 and it's a great phone. I don't have any reason to upgrade yet though and you have a point, I've mainly had to upgrade because I've found the iOS updates have tended to make my previous iphones run poorly. I'd rather not upgrade but then, you need to for security.

Funny how people feel the need to chime in with snarky comments about the spec, speed etc and make derogatory comments about who this device would be fit for. There is nothing wrong with this device in 2016, it's still nice and responsive and nippy. I'm sure you can find someone out there who claims otherwise but my personal experience is quite the opposite. Also spec are entirely irrelevant with Apple products, since you just can't compare with an Android, where the components are off-the-shelf and the code is not designed to work with the components used from the ground up. This is why iPhones don't need ludicrous amounts of RAM and 630 cores.

No offence to Android devices or Android users - I'm using a P9 myself - but why do people seem to get so much joy from being critical of others?

I wouldn't want this device as my main phone these days as the storage is a bit low and I prefer a slightly bigger display etc, but for this money I would recommend this over any Android in the same price bracket for a relative or friend who isn't into tweaking and fiddling with themes and keyboards and suchlike. iPhones are just easy, and I get far fewer headaches from family members with them.

All the new iphones I've had via O2 have been locked to O2.

The network lock isn't on the iphone as such just on the Apple database that compares the device number to its database when a sim is inserted in the phone. If it's database shows locked to a specific network only a sim from that network can be used and only that network can request the unlock.

Iphone from Carphone Warehouse are sold as "sim free" and in the past these have locked to the network of the first sim inserted. Since Three don't lock the trick about unlocking a "sim free" phone using Three came about.
eslick
21 Dec 16 #36

Good to know, didn't used to be the case you had to put the sim in to lock it and there was as mentioned the three trick.
joeluken
21 Dec 16 #35
Unless you activate the O2 sim in the iphone O2 will not be able to unlock it. I tried and O2 stated the device wan't active on their network and could not be unlocked. I then activated the 02 sim and by device IMEI appeared on the My O2 info. Then requested the unlock 24 hours later and it was then unlocked.

In terms of airtime contract the sim is "active" i.e. your contract has commenced when posted to you just not in your device. Your airtime billing has started even if you don't activate the sim with your handset. Your first bill will arrive about the same time as the phone and is a month in advance payable by DD 14 days later. Hence why I informed O2 I had cancelled by DD otherwise it would likely take the money.
joeluken
21 Dec 16 1 #34
My O2 purchased Iphone 5S was brand new and sealed. I tried using a Three sim first but the phone was locked to O2. Hence with this O2 supplied phone it did not lock to the first sim used as is the case with "sim free" iphones from Carphone.

I think there are some cases when people purchase nearly an O2 new iphone i.e. often used and returned during the cooling off period that have already had the unlock requested before being returned. Hence when sold on by O2 as nearly new these are already unlocked and add the confusion about Apple O2 phone being locked.
termin8r
21 Dec 16 1 #33
Actually they are locked to O2. I got a 5s on O2 refresh. I was led to believe by people on here that the first sim would lock it, so i put in my 3 sim. It would not accept it. It was definitely locked to O2.
plewis00
21 Dec 16 #32
O2 Refresh seems to be about as consumer friendly as 'cash back' on phones. Generally it works fine but when it doesn't, it really doesn't. I had considered doing this myself but it seems too risky and its clearly abuse of O2's system as they quite obviously don't want you to buy it and cancel it to get a cheap phone, it is inevitable some people will lose out.

Got one of these and an SE from O2 recently. Chose to pay the £153.99 upfront using the "pay for your device in full" option on the O2 website with the £9 pm airtime. When the phone arrived I checked it was locked to O2 and the next day requested O2 unlock it which is free. The unlock was provide same day at which point I contacted O2 to cancel the airtime which it did and there was no issue with the handset because it was already paid in full. The O2 sim stopped working almost straight away and I confirmed via live chat the next day that the airtime contract was cancelled and that I'd also cancelled the DD. Was told I'd receive a new bill in 14 days which would be a pro rate of the monthly airtime for the days it was active so less than £1 and I could pay this by card over the phone.

But when it doesn't, a very messy situation.

far easier to go directly to your bank and make a direct debit indemnity claim. recently had to do this as a change to a DD had not been actioned meaning the full balance of my credit card was paid as opposed to the minimum. my bank instantly refunded me the payment and said they would pursue the credit card company to get the money back. took one 2min phone call.

Agree, except the part about Ofcom. A threat to take it to the Ombudsman is far more realistic as it follows their own complaints procedure. Ofcom is a regulator and won't do much with individual complaints other than advise you follow the correct procedure - which O2 will know. Not to mention every case about O2 taken on by the Ombudsman costs O2 several hundred pounds in the form of a case fee - a far bigger incentive for them to resolve a complaint in the first instance.

Looks like a good price but this phone is from the year 2013.

In terms of what's under the hood it's almost comical!

1GB RAM
16GB storage
1560mah
8mp camera
4 inch screen
1.3ghz dual core processor
Gorilla Glass 1

I can see the appeal that it's an iPhone but I can't see this being able to run much in a year or so.

I'd suggest a Huawei p9 lite. Can still be got for 140 in EE stores. Much better phone and much better value for money imo. All you're getting with this phone now is an apple logo. But I guess for all the people buying for teenage girls that's quite important.

Completely agree with you but the 5S at this price is a great entry into Apple phones, if one is that way inclined.

I went for the SE. I've done the refresh thing before with no trouble

Yes you could do, if you want them to report missed payments to credit reference agencies and trash your credit file. Better to leave the DD in place even if that means they take the payment and have to refund you.

scouser on the o2 website I can't find how to ask for the phone to be unlocked? I've found something in FAQ'S, but then it just trips me back to a main page?

Thanks for this guide, as I've bought one for my daughter today and intend to cancel tomorrow after seeing recent posts like this

how do you go about with this "buy out trick" I've never used it before?
scouser100000 to FoxTwist
20 Dec 16 7 #13

7) Unlock code will come through in about 2 to 48 hours.

submitting an official complaint stating what you want and why, and asking for repayment of your costs to date ie postage, improper charges under threat of complaint to OFCOM works without fail

Anyone know what the SE is like? £264 for that on the refresh. My understanding is that you can cancel the airtime as soon as you have the phone and just pay for the device. Don't know how easy this is though?

Once the fees are factored in I doubt it. Not worth an entry on your credit report just to do that.
