Voted hot.

Why do people go for these over something with a wireless subwoofer? I understand it's bose, but at this end of the price range I doubt it's worlds apart, compared to a 3.1 soundbar.

Happy to be wrong.

That's not entirely fair. Some of their speakers are great. I have their Companion 20's and they are almost as good as the MM1's at double the price. This soundbar though, got crap reviews everywhere; you choose your battles.

This is definitely the best price I've seen the solo 5 and I was about to pull the trigger on one but I'm afraid the reviews put me well off it. I know most people only post up there displeasure and disappointment in general review sites, so it could seem biased, but the self proclaimed 'audiophiles' on dedicated audio forums seem to say the same. Please have a good read before purchasing. It would have to be a lower price for me unfortunately.

I have the Denon sound base. I think the model is dht-100. It is good. And perfect so the kids can't mess around with it, whereas with a sound bar it either looks messy on a wall or if free standing the kids will get at it. Granted, the sound isn't surround or has a dedicated sub, but the sound is louder and fuller, and does the job it needs to do at the moment.

I bought one of these and love it! Sound quality for the price is good, more then loud enough for the living room or listening to music in another room. Easy to set up and use, impressed enough by it I got my sister one for Christmas. Recently there were down at £77 and ~£99 as well.

I have a Sonos setup which I love, but the only piece of kit of theirs I don't have is the Playbar, and there is a very detailed tech review that put me off it to be honest. I do however have the Sonos sub, so if there is something like a soundbar at a reasonable price that i could get that could make use of that sub as well, that would be ideal. Any ideas anyone please? Cheers.

By the way, interesting recent review on there from the guy that has Sky Q

"Trying to watch anything on my sky q and it is extremely quiet so rang bose after seeing they helped a lot of people with the same problem only to be met with the least helpfull customer service representative I've ever spoken to. Effectively told that because I have sky q that it would be quiet and there was nothing they could do so I would have to just deal with it."

Mine arrived yesterday. It's attached to a 40" Sony in a slightly larger than average room.

It's improved movie audio substantially and normal tv channel audio is also much improved. Watched the force awakens last night and was grinning due to the sound improvement right from the start, wife was also impressed!

I looked at options with a wireless sub but don't really have the room or need for thundering bass, and what bass this does provide is more than I need (especially when my 2 year old is trying to sleep in the room above). The way my TV is mounted to the wall means I'd also need to mount a larger soundbar to the wall or the TV, plus find additional power for the sub. This just sits discreetly on a small side table beneath the TV. One cable for power and one to connect it to the TV, simple and in keeping with the aesthetics of the room I'm using it in.

I'm well into gadgets and technology but I'm not an "audiophile". You may be able to find a system with improved sound at a similar price, but for me the simplicity and space saving features this suited my needs more. The programmable remote is also excellent and eliminates the need to have 2 separate remotes lying around for the telly and soundbar. I read a few less positive reviews before buying but I'm more than happy with it and definitely don't regret my purchase.

First off, beats headphones are actually quite good now .

Secondly - Bose caters to a specific market. Their sound docks and little speakers are crap, I'll admit, but their bigger stuff, and headphones, are impressive.

My parents have the 520 - yes, you could probably build a slightly better system with a separate av receiver and speakers, but it's by far the best value/performer with the simplicity they need.

Bose is so overrated these days. Bose is not even a premium brand, Bang & Olufsen is a lot better and even Harman Kardon. The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 2 is the one for portable wireless speakers for a decent price. I would never go for Bose their speakers are just a rip off.

Beats are very very average at the very most. Bang & Olufsen are the speakers of choice for getting anywhere near the audiophile grade speakers and also for value for money the Harman Kardon Onyx studio 2 is the best portable speaker!

I just bought a Samsung HW-J355 120W Soundbar with Bluetooth & External Sub from Tesco Direct for £89 (but they just put it up to £124.49). You can get it at Currys for £99 - 10%

It gets great reviews everywhere and I love it. The Subwoofer is wired, I can't understand the obsession with it being wireless. Mine just occupies unused floor space behind the TV, subwoofers can generally go anywhere.

Has anyone read the low star reviews on JL or Amazon's website. As with most of these things it's always personal choice but I find if I buy something and there's something I don't like about it someone else has always commented. I know it scores quite well overall looking at the 4 and 5 star reviews but the lower stars do give cause for concern. More often the case comments mentioned in one, two and three star reviews are the ones that are the most critical and the question is, will this bother you. I only been caught out a couple of times where I have disregarded low star reviews only to find they are right. Just because something is brand name and on offer doesn't mean to say it's any good or more often than not, the offer price is where the item should be anyway. I have a Bose system in my car. It's rubbish to be honest yet an old docking system we had years ago was amazing. Just shows that a company like Bose can make decent gear and not so decent gear but the more tv manufacturers fail to replicate the old CRT style speakers the more they will be trying to get us to part with money that we shouldn't need to.

You had me until the last part,

I don't believe that any tv manufacture is trying to manufacture ye olde stereo speakers from your CRT, nor that it's a new scheme to extract more money... televisions are now able to be built on thinner and sleeker bodies which looks great but does drop sound quality... it opens up the ability for a modular system where you can pick whatever combination you want.

Not only that but TVs now are nowhere near their old price to size ratio. You can grab a 50 inch set for 400 notes in a lot of shops now... plus your soundbar at 200 or more... try doing that ten years ago!

Hi, my comment was a bit tongue in cheek to be honest. I remember paying a fortune for my first flat screen LCD tv and remember thinking the picture quality was perhaps not as good as the 40 kilo 3 foot deep surround sound tv it was replacing and thought the sound was carp as well. Technology at that time hadn't moved forward that much apart from being able to produce a television that was less than half the weight of my old one and obviously considerably thinner but at the cost of a lesser picture quality with motion blur and the sound. It's nice to see technology has moved on since in the last 12 years or so and I think the picture quality of my 1080 LG (medium range) is excellent and to be honest the sound isn't too bad either. Unfortunately though the manufacturers cannot, or are unable or unwilling perhaps to create the sound from the "proper" speakers that were in the 32" CRT tv's which was my last one. LG has clear voice which isn't bad on my tv but it does suffer like a lot of flat screens with voices not being as clear compared with the background. Soundbars are possibly a big market for the electronics industry and what you are getting in return on some of the cheaper systems is perhaps not as good or as cheap as it should be. One of the guys at work who has some ridiculous speakers in his car which take up half the space of his boot (he like his music), set to and made his own soundbar. He bought the casing, speakers and all the kit to wire it up for less than £60.00 and he reckons the sound is amazing and better than any tv sound system he has seen in Currys. He showed me a picture of what he had made. Looked pretty damn good to me.

My point really was there maybe is the technology to improve the sound on flat screen tv's but if we all believe it can't be done and we must buy a soundbar or surround system and the manufacturers know that they can sell them to us then that is how it will stay. I think the problem with most tv's is the speakers either project downwards or rearwards and not forwards like they used to be. There is also the theory that to produce a tv with quality sound may push the price up too far for the majority and marketing may show that manufacturers sell more of their cheaper products than more expensive ones.

I agree with your comments re pricing. Most people would happily pay £400 for a 50" tv and then extra either at the time or later for a soundbar. My last CRT tv cost me £650.00 back in the 90's lol. My present LG purchased in the sale December 2014 was £600.00 and I can lift it myself lol.

I just bought the LG soundbar, 320 watts, wireless subwoofer from the Euronics deal. reduced from £229.99 / £249.99 down to £129.99. I will give it a test at the weekend. I did buy the LG LAS160b which was just a 50 watt soundbar. It was absolute rubbish and took it back. Speakers on my tv were better so will see how spending a bit more money works.

Still can't believe this is as hot as it is. Everyone I have spoken to says you must get one with a sub-woofer.

I gladly give up some of the bass for the clarity. You can always just press the dialogue button a second time to toggle back to the regular sound settings if you prefer.
