Picked mine up earlier today, not ceiling mounted yet and thrown straight onto a light grey wall, however, I wanted to give some on the fence HUKD people a layman's overview.

It's fantastic - buy it. I was converted in minutes and can understand entirely why people choose these over TV's. In fact I've retired my 4K TV in favour of this, it's that good.

Blacks have a nice depth, we're not looking at £1000+ projector levels of blackness, but for the price, it's cracking. Motion and colour reproduction are so far superb.

I can't wait to break out some PC games; was going to pickup a GTX 1080 for 4K gaming but decided I wanted cinema sound, a massive image, movies, and a full HD graphics card instead (RX 480 Nitro 8GB) all for around the price of a single GTX 1080. I'll jump to 4K in a couple of years.

Got the last one earlier today from the Birmingham store. Took the 6 year guarantee since it seems pretty reasonable to me. It was noted that there are none showing on the system to be stocked going forwards from Benq as they ceased production but there are 1700+ In Richer stock so I'd expect these to be around this price again not long after the sale as a clearance deal.

Ever since nearly biting on the Costco deal on the optoma 141hdx a few months ago I've dived head first into projector research, comparing to an old 720p optoma I've been using, and after many many hours reading up and seeing demos, I've come to the following conclusion:

This is the best entry level (sub £500) projector out there. Fans of the 141x (and there are many, none of which I'm trying to provoke) generally have never owned a projector before and are quite rightly impressed with having an affordable big picture experience. Il sort of quote what the manager at richer sounds told me during a demo season:

In reality, all entry levels projectors compromise on quality in areas that the £2000+ Sonys excel in. So when you compromise a little to make a £1000 projector and more at £500 you can see when demoing what your getting (or not getting) for your money. Brightness, contrast ratio, fan noise, shadow detail, colour depth...it goes on and on, just like with tellys. The 141x however, compromises too much in all areas in the sub £500 market and isn't justifiable when compared in a demo to the w1070, or a optoma hd26, viewsonic 7827 and so on.

Benq are pretty much the only honest manufacturer when it comes to real world ANSI-measured specs, such as lumens and contracts ratio. Take the optoma and epson specs with a pinch of salt - when measured in real home environments with calibrated tools by 3rd parties they are nowhere what they have in controlled labs. If you suffer badly from the rainbow effect, perhaps go for a 3lcd projector such as the epson tw5300 but read reviews on that to fully understand it's pros and cons. If you occasionally see the rainbow effect but doesn't really affect you, this handles it well and keeps it to a minimal. If you don't know what RBE is, go see a demo and move your eyes around the picture and see if it's bothersome to you.

Read the reviews posted here, particularly by John Archer. He's clued up, honest and leaves detailed reviews focusing on pros and cons. Very good at comparing models that are similarly specced too.

Seriously consider using a screen. The difference was massive using a £20 100" screen from Amazon compared to a magnolia wall on my aging optoma dw318. Colours popped more, and ambient light was nowhere nearly as much of an issue as before for daytime viewing with curtains open. If ambient light is of no concern, then you probably needn't consider it as much but for me was worth it.

If you have multiple hdmi devices such as consoles, set top boxes, streamers etc then use an amp. They vary wildly in price depending on what you need, but for most folk a standard 5.1 receiver with 4 hdmis would be fine. And you needn't suffer the tinny, bass-less sound that comes from the majority of projector speakers.

I nearly paid the full £500 for it a couple months back, and again nearly bit at £449 over Black Friday but was holding out for a reduction on the 1070+ or 1080st as both offer a shorter throw and would be more versatile for use in smaller rooms should I move house soon but at £650-£750 are a significant jump up. At £399, this was a no-brainer.

Thanks for reading and hopefully I've imparted some useful information to someone.

Had this projector for 3 years. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It thrills me nightly, the 3D impresses me more than RealD 3D at VUE and ODEON and 2D image quality is strong too. Don't think; BUY IT. Watch it.....You're welcome.

Depends on the projector throw and the size of the screen. Use a projector throw calculator. http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-W1070-projection-calculator.htm

If the room is small you will be sitting closer to the screen and if the screen is too big,it won't be comfortable to watch the whole screen. You will need some head movements to see the entire screen

25 Dec 16 1 #29
Don't forget to check the throw ratio before choosing a projector. If you have a smaller room then the BenQ will fill better if you want a larger image.

If you want to project a 120" image you'll need a room thats at least 11' 4" with the benQ. The Optima needs a room 13' 6" to project the same 120" image.

26 Dec 16 1 #44
So true. Can't really trust the manufacturers specks as things like super brightness and contrast results can be fudged at the expense of quality using dynamic iris settings etc.
Try to see how they perform in real world scenarios and let your own eyes decide.
Bulb blew on my Hitachi tx300 and it doesn't really pay to replace a bulb at £160 when new projectors are this cheap. Decisions, decisions.

Hi all.
Sorry to ask a daft question, but I am looking for a projector that I can plug in a USB stick and choose a movie file and play it.
Will this do the job?
I see that it has mini USB for (service) which I am guessing is direct laptop feed from PC.

Alternatively is it possible for me to connect a dongle to the laptop/projector so that I can "cast?" movies and stuff to this projector?

If not can anyone suggest a model that will allow me to plug in a USB with files directly.

I am working in the middle east but back for xmas and I am lookinng to buy a projector as i dont have a TV there but have loads of movies including HD on my portable hard drive.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks

You can plug in casting / streaming devices such as Amazon Fire Stick / Box, Apple TV, Now TV, Chromecast - this is what I use it for. I don't think you can just plug in a USB stick containing movies because there wouldn't be any software to play the films.

I'm not entirely sure you know what you're talking about. No one in their right mind would want 24 fps gaming, that is MEGA slow. You either want 30 fps or, if the game / console / PC supports it, 60+ fps. 24 fps is used for films to give it a slower more cinematic feel, which you do not want in games or you will die. A lot

Thank you. Now the only three other 'mental' problems I need to get over is the age of this product (can't believe the updated '+' version is so much more expensive, and can't believe there are no other real alternatives with lens shift). The fact that I have to fork out extra for a warranty even though a vip member. And the fact that the on board USB port cannot be used to power an android stick. Tbh I will have a AV receiver hooked up so no biggie with the stick. Alternatives wise I have no choice there :disappointed: warranty...may borrow a friends warranty who bought this projector last year with a 5 year warranty

£40 for 6 year warranty. Worth it for the peace of mind it brings. Even if it doesn't guarantee the lamp for this long. Bought an Optoma hd20 for £680 from Richer 7 years ago. The rainbow effects generally effects you when up look around the picture or look left and right , you tend to see colors in a rainbow type pattern around objects , it's effects some but not all , having owned a dlp I don't see how you cold not suffer from rainbow effect , it's more if can live with it , I'm sure their are YouTube video's showing the effect.

I changed to an lcd best thing I ever did.
I would never go back to dlp now.

26 Dec 16 #104
In my opinion yes , you tend to find the budget home pj's are dlp , as they are cheaper to manufacture , and they fit a budget, for £400 this is a cracking machine , but it is budget and entry level projector a good starting point for some , until you demo some thing like the new Sony45 then that opens up a new can of worms again.lol.

26 Dec 16 #105
Well I've had a sanyo z4 since 2007 and never really felt the need to upgrade until now. Only upgrading as a new sanyo bulb will likely cost half of what a new projector would go for anyway lol

26 Dec 16 #106
It's likely to be good upgrade 720p to 1080p alone , not to mention the 10 years worth of tech upgrade to take into account it's just the rainbow effect , my advise would be demo one ,or buy with a view to return if unsuitable.

I bought the Epson over this a year ago due to the fear of RBE (the fact that I got it for under £400 in an Amazon lightening deal also helped). Agree regarding the blacks but this is easily remedied by using an ND2 filter (around £10 on eBay). The Auto Iris on the Epson is a bit loud and takes some getting used to though. All said and done I'm glad I went with the Epson rather than a DLP

Impressions so far: Colours look far more realistic than the HD141x I have. Fan noise is about the same. Brightness is surpinsgly good considering stats don't match up with HD141x lumens. Shorter throw means that this is going to have to be mounted rather than going on the shelf currently used by 141. The shelf position would deliver a too big a picture so need to buy a ceiling mount now.

No worries. I want to enjoy the projector as much as possible so decided against keeping my TV too. I get the benefit of extra space due to mounting this on the ceiling eventually, with a steam link and android box.

I don't use Sky or terrestrial TV services so it made it a simpler choice.

Rainbow effects are non existent, seriously, nothing so far in darkness and an open windowed bright room.

Notice the different blacks on the my little pony screenshot? Bright and dark areas of images are handled beautifully in my opinion.

At £399 I can afford to run this as my main viewing source, taking into account the cheap replacement bulbs mentioned earlier in this thread.

It's not the games or movements in the picture that cause rb effect , it's the individual looking around the screen , rb is seen when looking around the screen , left to right and right to left quick , it last for a fraction of a second , so on games it is likely that it would more noticeable than movies as you be looking all over the screen .

I am thinking of going with epson 5300 to avoid rainbows with a hush box to limit noise from the projector which will be free standing on table/shelf.

Could those wo know tell me whether this seems like a reasonable plan. Box will be light but double skinned with pc case fans front and back. does this seem like a half decent plan. Avoids the risks of DLP and overcomes the epson noise issue. the N2X or NX2 filter thin to sort out the black disply issue I will look at later.

Anyone see a major flaw?

Thanks for your input, some good advice in there.

As i mentioned above I bought the Acer H7550BD in Amazons lightening deal. It was my first projector and to be honest it was impressive. Reviews of Acer after sales care made me consider the Benq as it came with a 6 year guarantee from RS (at 10% of price).

Comparing the two, I thought they were very close in terms of colours. The Benq had better blacks and the lense shift, but the Acer had better clarity of image and less light escaping from the unit.

Ongoing costs also seemed to benefit the Benq - eg lamp replacement as mentioned above.

I have had dealings with returning failed units to RS and always found their service to be excellent, so this swung it for me. I returned the Acer yesterday.

If companies invested in their after care as much as Apple, John Lewis and RS, then this would increase sales considerably in my opinion. I like to buy with confidence and that any issues with my goods will be dealt with in a timely manner with minimal inconvenience to me. Simple business model overlooked by many large companies (to their cost IMHO).

I purchased a cheap £30 projector from Amazon during the prime deals day/week, just to have a go and see if me and her indoors would actually use a projector. We were blown away by the size of the image and despite the £30 price tag, its actually a pretty good image. We are now at the point where we are upgrading, so will be buying this projector to give us a proper setup.

For anyone wanting a screen, i purchased this one from Amazon for around £18. Plenty of others on there around that price. I then rang around a few local roller blind factories and priced up a roller kit for the screen. A little manufacturer/factory did me the right sized roller kit i wanted for £20. Works perfectly for what we need.

Just excited to go and pick up my new projector on my lunch break

There's very little wiggle room on this for side projection before the picture goes on the squiff and there's no horizontal keystone to adjust for it (although it's commonly perceived that using keystone adjustment negatively affects overall image quality anyway). While side projection is a feature found on some other projectors, it's still quite limited due to basic physics and besides, this is firmly the best overall pj at this price point.

Consider a ceiling mount that has an extendable drop - that way you project an image just below the light fitting. Unless you have a rather grandiose chandelier fitting, I think this should be sufficient.

Alternatively, It would probably be better to go for a short throw projector, so that you can mount it infront of the wall and before the light fitting and still get a 100+" picture. The throw distance/screen size calculator on Projector Central is a useful guide on the sort of size screen to expect from the maximum distance you can mount before the light. The w1080st (or w1080st+ if you prefer the minor upgrades and wireless hdmi option) should be suitable and is the upgraded, short throw model from the w1070 posted here, but unfortunately is almost twice the price of this deal. It was the ideal projector I was holding out on before this deal but sadly the £500-£1000 projectors don't tend to move much in price - if sub £500 is for your entry level crowd, and £1000+ (and the rest) is for your more serious enthusiasts, then the upgraded features in the £500-£1000 market is like flying Premium Economy...you think your getting something significantly better, but in reality it's still naff compared to Business class and you would have been absolutely fine sticking with Economy and saving a few hundred quid.

Hope this helps

Neither horizontal digital nor vertical keystone, that said, I tried messing around with vertical keystone for a higher/lower image and couldn't see degradation in image quality, I'm sure there is 'some', but seriously nothing that would make me rethink the mount if in that situation.

I would advise that you get a plumb line/laser guide (depending on how technical you want to get) and use it to line up an edge of your throw image, otherwise you might end up with a trapeze of sorts, which will degrade the quality.

mine is about 3 1/2 meters away and easily makes 120" picture. it's a very short throw machine....

3 Jan 17 #207
Don't forget you have zoom and focus too, the link 'Blotch' provides above should give a range of sizes per distance i.e 78"-90" @ 2m, or something to that example.

I used a combination of throw calculators (Benq do their own online here) and trial and error. I literally stood holding the projector inverted and walked, stood at a point below the stud in the ceiling and asked my partner to adjust zoom and focus.

It gave me a view of the quality and range of sizes at each point, rather than all theory from a throw calculator.

Im looking to position mine about 3m from the screen sitting about 5 feet above the floor pointing upwards, 120' screen hanging from a 15 feet ceiling (bottom of screen will be 1.5m from ceiling) would the lens shift allow for this upward projection?
spatter
3 Jan 17 1 #209
That's a pretty high ceiling!
spatter
3 Jan 17 #210
Possibly it won't
alltaken123
3 Jan 17 #211
You'll be looking at slightly more than 5ft from the floor, but it is possible.

Room height: 180 inches (15ft)
Distance to screen: 118.1 inches (3m)
Height of projector from floor: 63.2 inches (5.26ft)
Screen size generated: 117.8 inches

bmbarrymcd436
3 Jan 17 #212
Thanks for that, wow I didn't think it would be possible for the lens shift to allow for that much upward compensation, would it have any degrading of picture quality do you know? Would it still show the picture square onto the screen or would it look slightly 'tilted' if that makes sense?
alltaken123
3 Jan 17 #213
Using the example above, according to Benq, would allow for a 'square on' image with very little degradation. Remember also the thrown image is not central to the lens of the projector, it's more like 90 degrees, making the vertical keystone less taxed. Keep us updated on the install.
bmbarrymcd436
3 Jan 17 #214
Sorry If Im being stupid here but if the max lens shift is 20% would this definitely work if its showing on the calculator as 105%...or does that mean the lens shift is only a 5% differential ?

I bought one today, and said that I am a VIP Club member but the staff member said that the free 6 year guarantee wasn't applicable on this projector. It does say that it applies to the majority of TVs and projectors, but not all it seems. Still, it's a good buy and the extended warranty is worth it if you value the piece of mind that that brings.

Does anyone know if its possible to get rid of the lip sinc issues on this benq W1070 when using wireless for the audio? Took the plunge and bought it but was trying to not have to drill holes in my ceiling to run cable through so opted for a wireless receiver setup which I then plug into my audio amp. If not am planning on returning the bluetooth kit and paying someone to fit me the cable and then repair the damage.

Hi,
I have the Benq w1070 projector and with it I am trying to use the nu force BTR-100 bluetooth digital receiver (https://www.optoma.co.uk/audioproduct/btr100) and the MEE audio connect Universal bluetooth wireless audio transmitter AF-T1 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Headphones-Earphones/MEE-audio-AF-T1-BK-MEE-Meelectronics-Connect-Universal-Dual/B016NIOOH2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483478896&sr=8-1&keywords=mee+bluetooth+transmitter). I then have this plugged into a Sugden A21a amp. Hope someone can advise or help.

Bought it, better than any kcd tv. Gaming was awesome, my lad or is a hardcore gamer 1080 gf etc almost stole it from me. I had to batter him with a pillow! I got it projecting onto a white wall. Will paint wall grey. Picture is awesome with slightly faded blacks. Gutted no horizontal keystone as that makes it very portable even though you lose some quality. Im tempted to take this back to RS and get the benq w1080st+ but its £300 more, there is only one left somewhere in uk in RS but hmmmm I may just ceiling mount this. Im pushing about 100-120 inch screen. Very happy just wish it had horizontal keystone.

Will need ceiling mount, cheap spare bulb, bag, leads my mate will make them, anything else folks shout it out. Cant wait to use it in garden on summer nights. Im still in shock with the gaming!

Maybe consider Toslink instead, a fibre is thin and easy to hide under carpets etc, and without any of the quality compromise of Bluetooth.

Scroll up. I asked this earlier. Keystone depends on your alignment setup. some mounts come with length adjustments e.g.: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00892RUTA/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_w8kBybV1MC30C

Only other thing I have found with these, and its a problem on most cheaper projectors apparently is the uniformed focus. Put txt on screen ie windows pc will do. And if you focus the right to be razor sharp the left by the clock has a slight blur. Focus that and the right side has a blur. Its ok in films and even games, but I wish it was razor sharp all over. Dont matter what setting or location I use, looked it up and a lot have it. Food for thought if youre buying one.

For people who are sitting on the fence between 1070/5300/141x I would give an update. I had decided on the BenQ 1070 but as I read more about the old rainbow effect I thought again. I have returned to work in Qatar last week and decided to bring a projector rather than buy a TV.

With the aid of my son, I ended up buying a Ragu01 cheap and cheerful LED machine and an M8Sii TV box.

Since returning here I know did exactly the right thing. The projector is for me perfect. The picture is very clear and sharp. I did buy a screen but it was so good on a painted wall that I didnt bring the screen and I have not been disappointed. I have connected the TV box and watched/downloaded and watch all sorts of stuff. I have lots of HD/Blueray quality movies which actually look fine on the Ragu01 which is only 720p.

We have no rainbow effect, low power use and only £185. We move the thing from room to room watching movies from USB TV Box and with the wii attached the thing is great fun.

Any beginner looking for an entry level projector without rainbow and low level of noise that can play at very good quality, a range of connections including watching from USB (powerponts etc are also fine from USB, I am a teacher) and a microphone jack for my soundbar although we often use it with the inbuilt speaker which is for us fine as long as you dont stress it too much I recommend looking at this one.

I will liekly come in for some abuse, and I understand that the other 3 are in a different league but I was pleasantly surprised that I didnt need a different league. Will likely but a more expensive LED when returning to the UK as wouldnt be without the projector now.

I hope everyone is enjoying their new years purchse as much as we are enjoying ours.

PS...went to Ricehr Sounds to buy a BenQ 1070 projector and was told quite clearly and directly that it was a "complete waste of money to buy a projector at less than £1000" as they are cheap rubbish. In fact "the model that you would be most happy with is this £6000 model we have fixed to the ceiling". Glad we took the hint and didnt buy at Richer Sounds.

I'm using my decor, light grey walls (see my pictures). I don't doubt that it can blur on one side even if straight but try it square on first, like the poster who answered you first, even being off slightly can cause blur.

I use mine as a PC screen and it's all readable and uniform.
sim11
7 Jan 17 #244
I can be very difficult and time consuming to get both projector and screen completely square , and although it may appear square to the human eye it would really need to be measured using tools ,it's the only way to 100% accurate.

Because of the lack of horizontal lense shift that's where you have to start , you must get the image 100% centre of the screen , which honestly is not as easy as it sounds , that's where screens that cost more come in to there own as they have a nice plush velvet border that eat light over spill .

My only slight annoyance so far:

Focus is lacking fine detail when adjusting but can be set with a bit of faffing. Here is the annoyance though - replace that lens cap and arghhhh, time to adjust all over again when it's next used.

Things I have learnt. Square makes no odds unless it is massively out of square. To test its easy, swivel the mount, the focus does not change to blur. RS said the focus can be an issue with build and I am trying another new one. In addition the bigger the screen the less the left to right blur kicks in. At 160 inches there is next to no blur, from 100 down there is left to right or vice versa blur. Fan noise dont bother me. Cookie dough colour paint makes a big diff to your image, cream wall is best to project onto. A nd2 filter helps a lot for films, the cheap glasses were awesome. If you want your image close to the ceiling make your own mount. No latency on games (omg on rocksmith, racing and witcher). 4k & 8k looks amazing with UHD in dynamic. Its 1080 but I guess its the reverse of rubbish in rubbish out. Rainbows easy to see just blink n spin head lol or if eyes very tired, simple to cure, watch the content and tell yourself its £400 they literally disappear! Custom settings are amazing, out of the box cinema is close. Such an amazing tool Im so happy, and if my new one does not have the focus issue then fantastic. What a purchase!

Keen for some advice, I am after a projector for my office. We have a large waiting room where I want to be able to throw up a screen and use a projector for presentations when the office is shut.

I think I may have the opposite problem from most people..... my room is too big.

I currently have an old 800x600 projector in a spare room and its ceiling mounted 5 meters away from my 92" screen.

I'm assuming that this projector will create an image way bigger than my screen?
thecoolguy
18 Jan 17 #256
Youd need a long throw projector. Im getting approx 100" image at 2 metres.
Sir_Deadpool_of_Awesome
18 Jan 17 #257
So this projector will create a 92" image from around 2.5m give or take half a metre, and whether ur tinkering with zoom, lens shift etc to make it fit. If you want a bigger picture just take it further and further back - if you HAVE to mount 5m away, you'll probably end up with an enourmous pic, that will be taller than the room, so it'll be projecting across wall, ceiling and floor. Check the calculator on projector central, and consider your options around ceiling mounting or room layout. Here is no minus-zoom, for lack of better words to project a smaller image from further away. I have no idea if there's any kind of filter you can buy that works like looking down the wrong side of binoculars, but otherwise it's as simple as 'projector projects image size X from Y distance, increase Y, in turn increases X'

And coming from an old 720p wuxga projector I was truly pleased with the upgrade, and in your case I think you will be too, regardless of any projector you upgrade to.

Ditto. The whole point of an A/V receiver is that all things plug into that, and only 1 (or 2) HDMI's out to "monitors", or in this case 1 OUT to a projector (plus speaker and sub woofer cables of course)

Hi - i'm in the same boat but im wanting a ceiling recessed screen which adds silly money... projectorshop24 seem to have a good range.

Are you going for a wall mount?
silversurfer
27 Jan 17 2 #265
You are going to be sorry you asked. My current screen in built into the joists void and is a 96 inch screen. The projector is also built into the ceiling and so neither can be moved. The issue is that the picture bleeds over the side of my current screen and its either move the projector closer, get a bigger screen or switch to 4:3 ratio (awful). Amazingly the distance is just perfect for a 120 inch screen. The simplest solution seems to be get a bigger screen, cut out a bit more plasterboard and install it (Im useless at DIY but I have a friend who is a fantastic carpenter so will call him in.

For those of you who may be unaware, the RF remote on most cheap chinese screens can be replaced with an IR remote. This means that for those of you who may have a logitech hub, it can be can controlled by that if you have an Amazon echo - well lets just say its like playing god in your living room

You can see my blog post on this and a short video here

This is a picture of what the current screen looks like recessed

Hey all,

I need some help from a seasoned expert

I am torn between the (now much more expensive) £499 BENQ W1070 and the £464 Optoma HD142X.

I predict that my (ceiling mounted) projector bulb will be about 3.2 meters from my 92" projector screen, which has a vertical width of 203cm.

Looking at the projector calculator, it looks like both projectors will fit in my room and fill up the projector, with :

- the BenQ needing to be seated 3.05m from the screen and at 1.00x Zoom
- The Optoma needing to be seated somewhere between 3m and 3.3m from the screen, with zoom ranging from 1.00x to 1.09x

Can someone please advise if I am accurate here? If so, based on the discussions here it does sound like the Optoma is a more sensible bet (brighter, a little cheaper). Any concerns I am missing? E.g. price of bulbs etc?

Thank you in advance!
