I'll be nice about this unlike both of you. The steam machine is indeed designed to play games. However it is also a fully functional PC which by simply creating a windows boot USB (very easy to do) you can turn into a fully functional PC in a small form factor. In fact I actually get genuine windows free or certain businesses can get licences for £10. So my comment is entirely relevant because it's a much better machine which is also fully upgradable (bar the GPU) in a similar small size. It also has a pretty decent GPU which even if you have no intention of gaming can be used to accelerate a variety of applications. I also own an Acer RL85 that was less then this PC and is actually a better system (£99). Hopefully you are enlightened enough to realise that an i3, 4GB RAM and 500GB 7200rpm drive is a better PC then this. I've had a similar system in the HP Stream 11 and a Lenovo ideastick and unlike a Chromebook windows runs like rubbish on these PCs.

Cold, terrible cpu, seen i3 systems go for this price in the past with similar specs.

I'm voting hot but I think you'd be better paying the extra £100 for a steam machine from Amazon. Of course £100 is a lot of money so unlike many on here I'm just voting hot for the deal as it is a good deal for this product and then giving my opinion which is not in any way related to the deal!

But isn't a steam pc for playing games on? This one is hardly a gaming spec and is intended for adults, so seems to me your opinion is irrelevant.

No, this is perfect for media streaming, Netflix etc to a TV. Not for playing games.

Does this come with the dual disc tray so can just drop in a another 2.5 drive?

If you’re looking for space to house your movie or music libraries, use a single 3.5-inch or two 2.5-inch hard disk drives. Alternatively, you can choose a combination of 2.5-inch hard disk and solid state drive to speed up your operating system.

Voted HOT! Why:
1. Legit Windows c£40
2. CPU £40
3. SSD £20
4. 2GB RAM (needs more) £20
5. WIFI + Bluetooth £20
6. Built in card reader £10
7. VESA mount! - you can attach it to the back of your monitor (if you buy one with VESA mounts)
Total c£150 but that is before cost of power supply, case etc. Got to be about £200 of value in the box.

With you 100% there mate - impossible to list any kind of pc, tablet or even TV without it being dissected as a games device...some of us want a TV to watch TV on, weird eh?

Could you upgrade the CPU in these?
eatmorefish to Eez1
12 Dec 161#21
Yep. You'll need to remove the WiFi card, then put the ram to one side. You'll see that the cpu and mb come together, so remove them both from the case. While on the subject, it will be hard to find a suitable motherboard for the case, so unless you are confident taking a sharp pair of scissors to the motherboard I would recommend budgeting for a new case.
Quite a lot of work IMO, but on the plus side you'll be able to use all the spare parts to make an entire mini pc.

Absolutely, I also agree the Alienware machine has much greater use and longevity than this deal.
Try transcoding some h265 on this and passing it over your local LAN, watch the CPU set on fire trying.

Perfect as a HTPC or for web browsing and word documents and spreadsheets. The internal bay seems to allow for 2 x SSD / 2.5 in HD or 1 x 3.5inch HD. You will have to change the BIOS setting to enable legacy(?) USB booting (e.g. LibreElec in my case). 2 x RAM slots. A big plus (well for me) is an Toslink optical output, seldom seen in new PCs.

Ironically I wouldn't buy the Steam machine to game as it is basically a 860M inside. It isn't a good game machine but it is a really good small form factor PC with a decent CPU. Unlike this deal. Like I said this is still a good deal in its own right. BTW I don't really game as otherwise I would have put the £250-300 towards a rx480 or 1060 if I did.

I can confirm this comes with the "Vivo Dualbay" it comes fitted with a 32GB 2.5" SSD and you can fit a second 2.5" HDD or replace the dualbay chassis with a 3.5" HDD. Also has a SD card slot and 6 USB ports so you can add external storage.

Thanks, when i looked on my phone info was really limited, when logged on to website using laptop could see it listed under contents. I have a couple of 2.5 inch drives sitting doing nothing so will drop one in, i did read somewhere max of 1tb for internal drive, anyone installed anything bigger?
My bluetooth keyboard with touch pad arrived today, extra memory due tomorrow and unit should be with me shortly, all good to go!

I have an Intel Compustick which sits behind my 4k TV and turns it into a proper smart TV. The standard smart TVs units are rubbish. These devices are perfect for this environment. Hardly going to set the world on fire for performance but a good idea for making a smart Telly alot smarter.

15 Dec 16#35
You should be able to fit a HDD larger than 1TB, there shouldn't be any actual hardware limitations or bottle necks limiting the max size. I think they only test up to 1TB which is why nothing bigger is stated on the website.

15 Dec 16#36
I couldn't see why they would limit it but was listed in a review i read, the only thing i didnt think of is setting up windows, the keyboard i bought is bluetooth so guessing might have to go find/borrow a usb keyboard for initial set up.
