I'm suspicious of people who live their lives by BBE dates.

Millions of tonnes of good usable food is wasted every year because of BBE dates. People need to learn to store fruit/veg correctly and recognise when they're going over.

I don't think I've ever taken notice of best before dates on veg. If they're starting to go moldy, squashy, different colour etc, bin them - otherwise they're fair game!

Yes they do. It's just inconspicuous code. Something like 015216 is day 1 of week 52 of 2016.

Asda here in Sheffield we're giving away all their parsnips carrots broccoli etc for free near closing time today. Not out of date perfectly good to be eaten and no limit

Asda have put all their spuds to full price. Tesco and Morrisons are still doing good deal, especially morrisons 3 x 2.5kg of Maris piper for a quid

I`m not as I`m one of them, most of what I eat is bought at reduced price lol

Tis is one of those theeds that make me both laugh and also wonder about folks relative value of things.

I 've seen posts go sub-zero despite saving potentially £10s - £100s, but save 50p on a bit of veg and it goes scorchio. :confused:

Asda can **** off. If it wasn't for Aldi and Lidl they'd still be trying to charge you £1 for sprouts.
Aldi stuff does have BB dates anyway, it's just in code. so 5003 would be day 3 of week 50. Their fruit and veg lasts way longer than some of the bigger supermarkets too, especially Morrisons, and their Christmas grub this year is absolutely superb.

Oh dear. oh dear. Just because the supermarkets sell veg cheaply, it doesn't follow that they pay the farmer any less. They will take a hit of a few pence on veg to get you into the store and then hope to fleece you on the other things you purchase while you are there. Look up 'loss leader'.

I genuinely ate a packet of diced beef that had been in my fridge with a use by date 2 months to the day out of date. It was a bit funky but I softened it for about 30 minutes before putting it in a PHAL - yes, a phal, and I didn't have bad innards from either. My fridge was set a bit low, I'll admit, so your mileage may vary.

Food hygeine freaks do my nut in. The first time I met my girlfriend's friend was at a party 15 years ago and in the morning while we were all snoring and hungover she got up like a little elf and tidied up and threw all the party food in the bin. I well never accept her as a friend. She may get a nod through gritted teeth but that's still twiglets floating in Cinzano that I'll never get to taste.

They may have the dates on the entire box like some asda fruit and veg do, check for it next time.

Well hopefully it will be resolved in your area soon and you'll get the fruits and vegetables you so obviously require. I'm guessing there's not much of a potato shortage in your area though.

It a con if u tjink farmers are missing oyt in there new land rovers every year. U should be after the supermarkets who keep all the margins. Consumers should get a fair deal. The supermarkets need to stop being so greedy as put in on the customers.

I like sprouts but they play havoc with my guts. 12 hours after eating a portion of sprouts, it's like I'm a slurry spreader.

The only reason I appreciate the BBE dates on fruit and veg is because they are good for gauging how long the product has been sat on the shelf for - completely agree with everything else that's said, but I know how much the dates on stuff vary in supermarkets, and (as most people do) I tend to pick stuff that has the longest date on it.

​....and you as the buyer are also sending the message to the supermarket that the cheaper the fruit and veg the more loyal you will be and the more you will buy, hence the supermarkets keep their contracted prices as low as possible. It's actually a two way process and you as the buyer are as responsible as the supermarket...doh, maybe I'm not quite as 'daft' as you are eh??

Agreed-it's called using your nose (and common sense\)-I've got a Gammon that's nearly a month past it's BBE date, some mussels that are at least a week out, and a haunch of venison that I've deliberately kept three months old, for flavour-I used to live in France, where one learned to use one's nose above all else!.. If one bought from a butcher's, baker's, candlemaker's, etc, there would be no BBE date-so what would one do then?..

Lidl fruit and veg is great, but their again I live in Spain. Should there be a difference?

My local fruit and veg shop doesn't have any BB dates on them, cost more then 19p but I like to support my local shops have some heat but will not tempt me into buying fresh veg? from a supermarket

Nice! I went in to Tescos on Saturday and the price of a head of Broccoli had actually gone up to 45p, which makes this deal even hotter.

I'm not very loyal to any one supermarket and tend to use them all occasionally. I find Morrisons the best for fruit and veg but not the cheapest; Tesco, Sainsburys and Waitrose at the second level with Lidl, Aldi and Asda the worst but saying that the vast majority are fine its just the occasional issue. Threw away some Aldi onions recently only a day or so after getting them due to about a 3rd of the pack being rotten inside. Generally if its a minor issue where you can tell the veg is older than you realise so not ideal but still ok that would be Lidl for me. That said I shop at Lidl about 10 times for every visit to Aldi as don't have an Aldi close to me. I think when your shopping too and you like the prices but then won't buy because they look tired and unappealing that would most likely be Lidl or Asda.

The worst issue is Asda home delivery though because their pickers tend to pick the most awful short life products which has meant that you get to a point where you can't trust Asda for fruit and veg with online deliveries. My mother bought a melon from them online that was so rotten her hand went straight through it when she picked it up. She made the effort to return it to the store she was so disgusted with it.

All dated for the 21st in our local ASDA and tiny sprouts.
Maybe cheap, but even at this price I gave it a miss.

I used to work in produce for Asda, for about 3 years. I was always told (by the produce manager) that at Christmas they extend the best before dates on the the products (normally they are 2-3 days this would be changed to n+1 removing 25th BB date). This was to avoid us having to mark down between a third and half of the stock on Christmas eve as the store is shut the following day. Also the boxing day delivery will be very limited and you would be selling back stock held in the chillers and ambient backups predominantly till the 27th.

Best Before dates although I believe are a legal requirement for the retailer, should be taken more as guidance for the consumer. You can easily tell if veg is off from a visual check, it doesn't carry the risks of fish, meat or dairy. Common sense is all that's required.

Nothing wrong with BB dates. Just means my food costs about 5 to 10% of what others pay. Even bought teabags in M & S that had a sell by date, 40p instead of 2 pounds. Most food is fine to eat up to a week past BB if kept refrigerated, and still smells OK. Only thing I will not risk is Chicken. Worked in food industry many years ago. Past a BB date is nothing compared to what used to happen!

But, should prices on stuff like this be increasing as opposed to decreasing, you can be sure the Remainers would be blaming it on Brexit. Works both ways...

I agree, even though the pound took a hit almost 6 months ago, discounts have been left, right and centre. I've never seen stuff so cheap, from products made and imported from all corners of the globe.

Yes, because obviously we had nobody to harvest the fields in the thousands of years people have inhabited and farmed the lands of this island prior to joining the EU.

Aldi`s fruit and veg has ALWAYS seemed superior to the other supermarkets forget the silly dates on fresh stuff your eyes and nose is the best guide ?

Sprouts are delicious when put in a microwave pot with apple sauce and mint and butter and nuke for 6 minutes.

​I can't be 100% certain but most if not all of aldi veg do now have a properly visible use by date. Have done for several months now

If it looks good after this date, I still use them but I do use the dates to put the freshest ones I can in my trolley

How is BBE any different to not having a date at all? It just encourages people to throw away perfectly good food.
Best before doesn't give the production/harvest time and date to the consumer, and either way BBE/no date you still need to use your own intuition to determine whether it's edible or not: BBE isn't a use by date.

Bought broccoli (prepack, not loose) four times from Asda and each time I found lots of worms and caterpillars in them. Took too long to clean so just threw them in the recycling.

The Tesco equivalent don't seem to have this problem.

You can buy loose fruit and veg in Asda, that doesn't have a date on it so why does bagged veg need it?

There is a BBE date it's just hidden as a 4 digit number, the first two numbers are the week number and last two are the day of week, eg. 4505, week 45 day 5, I usually find the veg is still on sale way after this date anyway
