Fair point, my iPhone is pretty much knackered anyway so wasn't really much of a risk for me on this occasion but I see what you're saying

It was probably the last one in a store so reduced and see the heat and even that was probably the only store across country.

When it comes to the risk of frying your iThing, the quality of the charger is the thing to watch.

They will work but they charge slower and they don't have an official licensed regulator chip in them so there's always a risk of them damaging the phone. Last one I used with my iPad - battery ended up swelling up. Could have been coincidence but it put me off these super-cheap cables. I have a Griffin cable and a Philips cable now, both with certified chips in them.
