i have the original ftv - installing Kodi is fairly straightforward....but I like to use a plugin called Ares in Kodi so you can use a prepared 'build'
I had an Android Box, which would have been brilliant, except that the Plex Client would not play movies at all.
It would play 20 seconds ok, then the picture would freeze but the sound would carry on.
After 10 to 15 seconds the picture would start again, but a twice the normal speed while the audio remained at a normal pace.
My Fire TV has played just about everything I've thrown at it. :disappointed:

I had 3 Android boxes - high endish MINIX NEO X8-H Plus, a mid level Wetek and a cheaper Quad Core MXQ Pro.
I frequently had issues where Kodi hangs / crashes etc with all three boxes.
A few weeks ago I signed up to Amazon Prime so decided to try a refurb FireTv 4K. Took me 1-2mins to install Kodi - plus a few more mins to install my Addons etc.
Just after 1-2 weeks usage I found that Kodi on the FireTv was rock solid stable compared to the MXQ Pro it replaced.
So, I just used this offer to get my 2nd FireTV and again, over the past week, I find it far more stable than the Minix X8H+ it replaces.
Maybe I have been unlucky with my Android boxes - but when you add the bonus of being able to run Netflix easily, for me the FireTv 4K is well worth the extra.

Just get a normal android box.
2gb ram, s905 Quad Core cpu and 8gb storage. about half the price.
Playstore is better than Amazon Appstore for Emulators and Kodi, and you can easily install Amazon Appstore on Android whereas its a bit more fiddling to install playstore on Amazon devices.
Plus with roughly £30 saved you could buy a wireless gamepad and 32gb sd card.
My box plays everything upto Playstation 1 games easily and Dreamcast but thats still a little buggy.
Look up "Rom collection Browser" for Kodi

Anyone know it there's a USB plugin solution a la the Nvidia Shield TV workaround?

Not unless you want the unofficial Netflix app which cant even do HD quality - only certified Netflix android devices can play HD or 4K.
I have the Nvidia Shield tv box in my room which is a fantastic device and we wanted another cheaper device for the downstairs tv, we tried 3 different android ones from Amazon ranging from £35 - £55 all had to go back as were awful all could not do the resolution they had advertised, I wasn't even getting hd quality on kodi or Netflix and they were all advertised as having 2gb memory and 16gb storage and 4K and were so so so slow and a complete waste of time and money. We ended up getting this when it had the price drop and I have to say it's absolutely brilliant and super quick and very nearly as good as my shield TV which is over double the price. Absolute bargain at this price!
Just use an app called apps2firetv and it installs any android app on the firebox wireless with one button

If you have a recent TV then the app should be better than using the box as the app ought to support HDR - this supports only 4K/30 as it isn't HDMI 2. Depending on the TV you may prefer the new GUI on the box/stick, or one might be quicker than the other. Also, having a box/stick does let you connect via an AV amp if that's your setup.
I changed from the stick to the box and it is a little bit nippier but for the difference in price the stick is fine really.

I've got a Nexbox 2GB/16GB which is great....However I could not play Netflix HD quality (I believe not all Android devices can - Netflix certified devices).
I use Kodi to play Freeview channels as I do not have external aerial and have just cancelled my Virgin Media TV contract (Cord-cutter).
Bought a Chromecast from tesco £25 (3-month Netflix credit £22.50) and it plays HD. Effective price = £2.50
Having said that I am thinking about buying one of these (Amazon Fire TV or Xiaomi Mi) along with a 4K TV.

Just bought one but have found that Alexa doesn't work on it like it does on the US Fire TV, you can't do anything with Alexa on this like you can in the US. You cant even say what's the weather like just literally search your apps.
Very very good apart from that I highly recommend this, bought an android 4k box just before xmas and it was terrible kept outputting 720p and was so laggy it was unusable with a terrible interface.....that went straight back bought one of these and it was a very good decision just wish Alexa could do more.

problem is this is a reliable box carefully engineered.
but the octocore box that you think is better is probably just a poorly made no-brand generic box with poor reliability,so many issues, and no support.

It depends what type of smart tv you have? If you have LG or Samsung then their OS doesn't support Kodi and you will need Firestick or any other android box to install it. I know some of the Sony TV has Android OS and you can install Kodi directly in to it. Remember TV builtin storage is very limited compared to external devices like Firestick or Fire TV which give an option of adding more storage via USB

Mobro stream quality has massively improved and is instant, for watching football quickly for example it's way better than using MyP2P or other websites with their potato streams. I'm also a little bit addicted to the Star Wars versus Star Trek channel on Mobdro, but I digress..I can have Mobro up and running with a stream in seconds, which is good enough quality wise, which you won't get with Kodi. If I wanted best quality then I'd use an IPTV service via Plex, I'd never use Kodi for anything, because 1. Kodi breaks 2. Addons break, recently Exodus did for 1 day 3. Kodi is slow to find streams, by the time you find a stream in Kodi you'd have been watching 5-10 mins in Mobdro. You could run an IPTV service in Kodi but you wouldn't you'd use Plex. Maybe I'm too fussy but for me Kodi does nothing worthwhile, with direct streaming apps I can find content quicker and more reliably everytime. I keep up to date with Kodi and try it with my workload and it fails me consistently. Kodi is an open source media player bodged to provide streaming content with dodgy addons and never succeeds over direct streaming ever.

Any advantage of upgrading to this if you have the old fire tv but no 4K?

For those who own a PS4, you can connect the PS4 controller to the Fire TV, works flawlessly for me.

was wanting to upgrade my excellent sticks but don't think i can justify it at this price. The stick's are simply amazing little thing running Kodi and all the amazon apps.

good deal - the 8gb is measly though. It can be increased easily using the USB.

1. Install ES File Explorer from Amazon store on Firestick
2. Install Mobdro.apk using ES File Explorer
3. Install Showbox.apk using ES File Explorer
Optional as I haven't tested the following on Firestick >
4. Install Cartoon HD using ES File Explorer
5. Install Movie HD using ES File Explorer
6. Install Megabox using ES File Explorer
7 Install MX Player using ES File Explorer
8. Install vplayer using ES File Explorer
Get Modro from Mobdro website and get all other apps from rawapk.
Now you have a suite of direct streaming apps with video players and no need to waste time with Kodi, and Kodi will waste your time believe me.

It would play 20 seconds ok, then the picture would freeze but the sound would carry on.
After 10 to 15 seconds the picture would start again, but a twice the normal speed while the audio remained at a normal pace.
My Fire TV has played just about everything I've thrown at it.
:disappointed:
Most TVs still don't support DTS though (mine doesn't).
I can't do it that way as most of my films are on a NAS and use DTS.
Start from £6 for a month
Then plug the Amazon box directly in to tv
My soundbar doesn't support 4K hdmi passthrough (most don't) and my TV doesn't output DTS.
Anyone know it there's a USB plugin solution a la the Nvidia Shield TV workaround?
Thanx.
I am tempted to get a Xiaomi Mi Box [Global Edition], so I can consolidate my Nexbox and Chromecast in one device (keep them as backup)...

I changed from the stick to the box and it is a little bit nippier but for the difference in price the stick is fine really.
I have a new 4k TV coming tomorrow and have amazon prime. Can i still use a firestick to stream the 4k to my tv or do i need this?
I use Kodi to play Freeview channels as I do not have external aerial and have just cancelled my Virgin Media TV contract (Cord-cutter).
Bought a Chromecast from tesco £25 (3-month Netflix credit £22.50) and it plays HD. Effective price = £2.50
Having said that I am thinking about buying one of these (Amazon Fire TV or Xiaomi Mi) along with a 4K TV.
After friends and family ave bought android boxes (usually the cheaper ones) most have either got one of these or the firesticks.
also users can update android via OTA or usb with no problems, unlike 60% of boxes
Very very good apart from that I highly recommend this, bought an android 4k box just before xmas and it was terrible kept outputting 720p and was so laggy it was unusable with a terrible interface.....that went straight back bought one of these and it was a very good decision just wish Alexa could do more.
but the octocore box that you think is better is probably just a poorly made no-brand generic box with poor reliability,so many issues, and no support.
so specs alone are not enough.
it's a very juvenile assumption that specs alone are all that matters.that's just moronic BS.
If you want a good solid box that has access to 4K content then use Amazon Video, Netflix and YouTube. These all have 4k content available.
Sounds like a load of people have bought 4k TVs and feeling underwhelmed.
only 8gb flash, most have 16gb
i can buy a octocore box, 3gb ram, 16gb flash for under £55
loads of good builds on kodi
That 'Service' is unfortunately extra ...

,but the build quality may not be as good. reviews look ok though
Unfortunately firestick is not 4k
I watch 4k through the amazon app on my tv but too be honestly it seems like the bit rate is very low, however i also have a firestick as well which seems as good as picture as the supposive 4k...
Have since seen smart tv's with built in wifi etc and web browsers..
Would i be able to run kodi on a new wifi enabled smart tv or do i still need an android box or a fire tv etc..
Cheeeee,eers
The Fire TV is much quicker than my Fire Sticks. Haven't got a 4k TV so not bothered about that.
.... If only you could get the voice command to work on YouTube searching this box would be flawless.

What do you have to do at TV end/ PC end?
Could an old frat 55YO do it?
You install the server part on your computer & the client on your device plugged into the TV.
Plex is well supported & tons of guides on the internet.
