Got it today, paired it with my JBL flip 2, it's not as good as the full size echo for sound.
Trying this next to see if I can send it through my 30 year old Sony Amp and speakers

I've read that Alexa in the UK is no where near as good as in the US. The skills are what makes the product useful and we are way behind in the UK. I would get a dot and use with the far superior speakers of my Sonos, but that hasn't been implemented (easily) yet. I'm waiting until we have a proper implementation of this like in the US, with out of the box Sonos integration then I will definitely buy one.

I like my Dot but find it's all but useless when I have football on the TV as i need to keep repeating myself for it to hear me.

I found the same. Having Echo next the TV didn't work for me and had to move away as the TV volume was too loud for Echo to hear me.

I am having issues now with it recognising my voice, it either doesn't hear me or does different things to what I asked, only just I asked Alexa, what's new, it came on then went off, so again I asked the same but this time it played my Spotify playlist. most of the time now I have to shout at it even standing next to it. it can be a bit temperamental

there is a new one on shpock for £200, I just asked what's the difference with hers and the one on Amazon for £129.99, she said she bought it for £280 from John Lewis and doesn't want it now. do sellers think buyers are that thick. the most it's been on JL for is £150 and now £130. well good luck selling that

My sister has an Echo and it's annoying as hell.

And it takes 10+ seconds (if you don't need to repeat yourself) to turn off a light rather than just flipping a light switch. Timers would also be much faster if you actually have a physical timer to push buttons on: push, push, start, rather than "echo... {wait, look for the light..} set a timer for 10 minutes... {I'm sorry, I don't understand}... ECHO!! SET A TIMER FOR TEN MINUTES!!!"

Very annoying, but at least you can turn off a light by shouting through the letterbox.

I find that it works best if you paused for a second or two after the activating word. Also, there's something wrong with yours, mine respond to a normal voice from across the living room with tuneinradio running.

mine goes off on its own when certain words are heard from my tv. the one that usually kicks it off is the Toyota NX advert and the the most annoying is the actual Amazon Echo advert.

A great example of unnecessary technology. A nice novelty, but will wear off very quickly. Waste of money IMO.

Sorry, I am very tempted with both Echo and Dot. I have Sonos and understand this will work with this soon. Is Dot just a smaller version of Echo?
Do you speak to it the same as Echo?

I bought my parents the echo and I have the dot with some speakers connected via an aux cable. I love my dot, its great just being able to walk into the kitchen and telling alexa to play some christmas songs or a specific song. I use it for temperature outside, grams/ounces conversion, timer when cooking but mainly for my to-do list and shopping list. I don't have any lighting for her to control...yet

Only the power supply is different. I'm using my US sourced Echo with UK voice without issue.
For many, it's a gimmick (I'm certain lots of people said the same when TV remotes arrived) though with all the additional integration it's a useful system. YMMV.

Yep, it's meant to be a home assistant, something to sit in a room and answer your queries/commands as needed. Out of the box it doesn't do much more than what Google Now and Siri will do, but the 3rd parties plugins make it much more. The IoT integrations are better than Google or Apple too.

tbh after seen the advert for the echo, it made me want one less, i can see its batteries dying 2-3 weeks after owning it, cba to charge it and then been in the cupboard for a further 5 years until a clear out where by i accidental drop it and smash it.
considering most people have an iphone or android phone you can do 95% of the stuff echo does on google now & siri.
why spend the extra £129.99

it's mains operated. I've had one since launch day. I've found that it recognizes my voice less and less each day, very strange. Sometimes i have to say echo 3/4 times just to get it to listen to me now. I'd personally wait till v2 or more firmware updates

I had to return my Echo as it kept losing connection with my network making it useless; think I'll wait for the Echo V2 and hope connectivity is improved.

yeah that's what we do for one room where we want it louder. bought a 30 quid Bluetooth speaker. also prefer the look of the dot as it's so compact

was tempted to get this, got 3 dots in the end as the volume / sound quality was good enough for what we wanted. does the echo warrant the price difference seeing as the only difference between a dot and an echo is the speaker?

I had an Echo but returned it and using a Dot with external desktop Bluetooth speakers instead.
The sound quality of the Echo is good but my desktop Bluetooth speakers are better.
The Dot is using the internal speaker but when I switch on Bluetooth speakers it pairs automatically, works for me.
