I think the 1TB version at £299 is much better value as it also comes with 8GB of RAM versus 4GB in the 500GB version.

£50 for 4GB RAM and 500GB storage seems reasonable. Is there any other differences e.g. improved processor/graphics card?

i bought one last week. you can get 4gb ram for £22
the hdd is rubbish anyway and you will need an ssd.
better off getting the base version and putting the extra 28 towards a ssd.

Yes other options and configs available personally would go for i5 to push the GPU a bit more get more out of it but for someone who wants to play Minecraft or counterstrike and have a small PC footprint not bad at all

Suggestions on the last deal for the same product suggest an SSD and win 10 license is best with this. I don't need one of these but I am tempted. For pure gaming the PS4 pro might be a better choice but this machine will be a jack of all trades with Windows 10.
Graphics card around 750ti levels. Close to OG PS4. I don't see the need of an i5 given the price premium. The extra 4gb ram would be useful for sure.

Good enough but the graphics are two generations old, its Laptop memory, and a "t" low power processor, If you could upgrade the graphics , maybe......

The graphics would be my concern if I was looking to buy. While it might just be ok for the base i3 system, it seems odd that even the i5 and i7 versions appear to have exactly the same GPU with the same 2GB GDDR memory, which will increasingly become a limitation with the faster CPU spped largely wasted, and as GPU power is more important that CPU power with a lot of 3D games you would really be better if they had spent a bit more on the GPU and a bit less on the CPU....

Yeah, it seems like a bit of effort putting on the windows for a system that isn't that powerful and still £250...
I have a laptop with a 950m chip and its pretty decent but if this is only 860m Id worry you wouldn't be able to get that much out of it. Sure theres loads of videos of performance on the other thread but Id just go for an xbox one or ps4 if you don't already have one at this price

Came to £195. Used my own 1TB HDD from a previous PC. Just need to add a GPU - got a number of options that'll make it more powerful than this and keep the price under £300.
I'm not suggesting it's not a good price for what it is - as above, a number of the oarts I've bought are used. This Alienware is brand new, much smaller, and uses a lot less power. But it's an alternative.

ok im guessing we may have some ppl here in the know when it comes to computing?? i on the other hand have no idea! i have a 12 year old son whos laptop has recently broken. he wants a new one for xmas or even a desktop. he needs something to do his homework on when needed but more importantly to him playing minecraft on! can anyone give me some advice or even make suggestions on laptops/ desktops! i was aiming to spend up to 350.. tia

Don't go for this, buy a proper desktop - The graphics card is seriously underpowered to make the system smaller. If you have a desk and the space there will be better options... That said this will work fine for what he wants but youd have to install windows on it as the steam os isn't very good

tbh, just buy this, windows 10 (£15 on here...) a keyboard and mouse (£15), 4gb ram (£25) and a cheap monitor.
you are going to struggle to get a system with as much power as this for much less, let alone the form factor and dell brand ( dell own alienware).
for example, a similar system you would need to buy a power supply, case, mobo, ram, cpu and graphics card... to do that for 275 is going to be a massive ask.
8gb ram alone will be £50, psu + case £40?, which would leave about £185 for a mobo, cpu and graphics card...
the equivalent desktop graphic card to this is the gtx 750ti, which seems to be £100.
so thats would leave 85 for a cpu and mobo...

2nd gen alpha with gtx 960 is worth the extra. I boot windows 10 and replace shell with steam big picture. I have an Xbox and this set up is better. It's easy to convert from steam os to windows.

As much as the pc noobs won't admit it this is dated tech, a ps4 pro will perform significantly better it doesn't have the system overheads of windows 10 or steam os and has more power under the hood plus exclusives. As a gaming platform it's a failed model much better options out there.

You'll struggle to build a pc for 250 as powerful as this.
This will run minecraft quite well, i imagine.
id buy this + 4gb ram(£25), windows 10 (£15 on here.... questionable site though), keyboard +mouse (£15) and a cheap 1080p monitor.
it will be more powerful than his old laptop without doubt! You'll just miss the portability of a laptop.

The Alpha R2 with a GTX 960 starts from £780. Hardly a fair comparison.
Excellent little device i play titanfall 2 mostly high settings on this, I've upgraded to a new gaming desktop but do miss the small form factor.
