I bought the kids two Acer Iconia's but the 10" versions last year. One was new for 120 the second Argos refurb for £80 which was like new.
They are fantastic tablets and pretty robust, my daughter has dropped hers a couple of times and it's perfectly fine.
There are only two downsides which depend entirely on what you use them for. Firstly, Acer bundles a fair bit of software with these which take up a bit of space, slightly annoying that you can't remove without rooting. Secondly is the 1GB memory which would be better if it was at least 2GB. Having said that my son has only experienced one game so far which won't install as it needs 1.5GB.
Excellent tablets overall though and at this price I'm going to get one for casting to Chrome.
Edit:- These new tablets are actually cheaper than Argos refurb ones on Ebay.

Borderline good price. At 45 quid, its hot-ish, around £55 it`s nipple-erect-cold ( ). Lukewarm being Acer.

I'm one of a number of unfortunate Acer Iconia owners who suffer from the widespread issue of wifi connections being "forgotten" on a regular basis (i.e. requiring re-entry of the wifi credentials to restore it). A major pain in the neck, and Acer support have not been terribly helpful with it. Look on the Acer forums if anyone wants any more info.

Bought one of these for the wilf last year, no problems at all with it.
It does all she wants!
Just remember its NOT a PC its less than £50 fair entry level as far as I can see!
As someone has already said for the old and the young! and the ones in between that want a basic tablet!

I bought one of these, it broke after 6 weeks and no longer charged. The shop wouldn't exchange it because it was bought online so it was sent back to the manufacturer who said it was our fault and refused to repair or replace it. The usb charger point was wobbly and had not been mistreated. Have since bought a kindle fire which also developed a fault and this was exchanged no questions asked. I would NOT recommend this or any other Acer product after this experience.

You've just learned the first rule of electronics purchasing. Only ever buy from Amazon direct, John Lewis or Richer Sounds.

Retailers can't do that especially within 6 months, you should have googled it and told them why that's unacceptable. I also pay with a credit card so I can potentially get them involved in any disputes but this item would have been too cheap.
I dunno that sounds like a rule you just invented.:stuck_out_tongue:
I do that with my Hudl 2. Not quite as reliable as you'd want sometimes but when it works it's a great sat nav.

This is still a nice present but the comment about it being suitable for grandparents is such a sweeping and rather patronising statement that it's usefulness is pretty negligible. Suffice to say that this would be a good present for anyone as a first tablet or for light users who don't need the latest spec tablet. If that includes your Nanna, then I'm sure she will love it but it does need stating on this forum that not all grandparents are technophobes with little understanding or interest in new technology.

Ha ha I guess that can be taken to be a tad patronising. My dad who's in his late 60s installs CM on every Android device he buys and is dabbling in Python scripts to do interesting things with his Arduino kits and an old Raspberry pi. For Christmas he's dropping me hints about an Alexa so he can hack it.

You can get away with an Echo Dot, then. It's the same as the Echo, but minus the (not all that good) speaker.
I don't see how you hack it, as all the good stuff is on Amazon's servers. The Echo is just an internet-connected microphone with an audio output added.

6 Dec 16#48
Thanks, that's a good suggesion. I think Amazon has opened up the Alexa API to 3rd part developers, there's already a large community of hackers out there, e.g.:
Yes, they have opened up the opportunity to programme new "Skills" for Alexa. There are hundreds on the store now. Almost all are glorified "Hello World" apps with no useful content whatsoever. I wouldn't class that as hacking, but I see what you mean now.
This Acer or the Lenovo Tab 3 7" Essential also at Argos for £50?
Lenovo has slightly better reviews 4.5/5 compared with 4.4/5 for the Acer.
I know the Acer has 8 Gb more storage but then I'm only using the tablet for browsing so that makes no difference.
So, storage aside which one is the better?
