Bought a ACER ASPIRE ES 15 laptop from Argos on 26th Dec 16 , as it was reduced in price .
It was only boxed in cardboard , without any protective bubblewrap to prevent impact during delivery !
So easy to set up , I was up and running within 30 mins out of the box !
7 days pass, then without warning the screen fails !
I phone Acer , but they were closed , so contacted Argos who referred me back to Acer .
I needed a laptop , as I was away for 2 weeks , but Argos did'nt want to know !
2 weeks later I got home & contacted Acer who said that they would email a postage label .
Nothing arrived , so I tried Acer Support . They fired questions at me as to how the screen broke , I told them it had not been dropped by me ! I went on to say that I had plugged into the USB Ports , so they accused me of damage , and told me the Graphic Card had failed ! They demanded I pay a large postage fee , up front for them to look at it .
In the meantime , i got a prepaid post label from Acer Manufacturer , so off it went !
2days later they called me from Telford , told me physical damage had broken the screen and that it would cost £ 101
What actually happened , was because Acer had not wrapped it in a fragile type box , it had suffered a hairline crack during transit . When the screen warmed up , it simply failed .
I called Argos who said it was down to Acer , despite it was from them I had bought it !

My local Argos agreed (via central technical advice) that the description was incorrect. I only submitted the proof provided here (links to Intel CPU page, links to another laptop on Argos with a corresponding Intel CPU page which quoted the base frequency, and finally, the Acer website selling a laptop with the identical CPU advertised as 1.10Ghz.

I didn't push for any more as I'm just happy to be able to return it for a full refund.

They have now changed the description to 1.1 GHZ. I wonder how many people got stung on this.

Taken back, refunded and offered £50 off higher priced laptop.
Headache long phone call with threats and then had to go over it again with them in store, as well as having to reset the machine which took forever (shows how poor the machine is!).
Worth it in the end but alas, the search for a decent laptop under £300 continues...

I've spoken to them online and discussed how poor it is to be selling something that isn't as advertised!
They agreed to accept it back and will offer a replacement of higher value.

Same here but I removed all of the advertising, snooping and connection sharing features of Windows 10. Mine runs like treacle too. I took it back and Argos refused to take it back as I'd paid for it in store (my wife's purchase that I picked up). I didn't notice the get out clause that gets Argos out of the distance selling regulations.
Now I'm following up the misadvertising route as this isn't the 2.6ghz laptop that was advertised.

I'd remind everyone never to buy goods with a memory in store from Argos as you lose your right to return it.

Argos have amended the description from 2.6 to 2.4 Ghz. They are still going from the turbo speed and not the 1.1 factory Ghz it is. So my complaint has fallen on deaf ears.
daviescr
30 Dec 16 #51
Thank you for your reply. Agreed the 'base' frequency is way too low for this sort of money never mind being £100.00 more expensive which it's otherwise sold at not being on offer.

yes I got a full refund in store. The manager offered me £50 off a different laptop but the only one I was interested was the Lenovo 2.1 quad core at £249 however it was not in stock. I wrote a complaint to Argos and basically pushed my limit and they have agreed to stick to the managers offer and send me £50 gift card as a gesture of good will So I can order the laptop when in stock. The performance seemed sluggish to me but without a proper bench test I don't want to committ to saying it was terrible. The fact it was 1.1 GHZ was enough for me to decide.

Does the spec dramatically change the overall deal here?
Being pentium quad core, is that still good or is it now a basic laptop?
Just intrigued as I'm picking mine up on Saturday and unsure what to expect or even if I should bother?!

Just confirm if you go into settings and then click about. The specs read as 1.1Ghz Quad, even the Acer site explains it's 1.1 Ghz. I have a screen shot if anyone is in doubt. Don't be dupped by the description on Argos website.

took it back because it's the wrong spec advertised. Tried it also and wasn't happy with the performance. Complained to argos and they were aware of the issue and offered me a full refund also they offered to knock £50 off a higher priced laptop after complaining. They have advised me they will be changing the description asap.

I had to vote cold - please mark as expired, product not in stock. Ordered one and had appaling customer service from Argos, they informed that is being delivered and then I had to call them to find out that in fact it is not coming at all as out of stock! No wonder they are lying regarding the specs as well. Be careful when ordering something from Argos, they have rude customer service people in a foreign call center and communication with client is zero.

One issue I do have is I get a network 2.0 or something microsoft software is missing on start up,would that be because I installed an old printer, as it seems to do it since then.

Hi Hornet UKWFC
To be honest I am no IT expert but removed Macafee anti virus and used Windows Defender and all the games apps,, I left Acer Configuration Manager, Acer Quick Access and Acer UEIP but removed all the Acer document apps etc. Sorry I cannot be more precise but I did not take note of them before removing them. It might be worth doing a backup prior to doing it but it did make a big difference. Try using CCleaner from Piriform as this helps things speed up a bit as well. Good Luck.

My first ever post on here because of this laptop. I have an apple Macbook Pro as my normal computer along with an iMac, Toshiba Chromebook and a fairly new Asus PC which my daughter uses for college. I took the plunge for this offer at Argos on this laptop as I needed a PC for certain software which will not work on my Mac. For less than £200 you really cannot go wrong. After removing all the bloatware which came with the laptop and 2 hours of Windows updates I can safely say it handles Excel, Word e.t.c and browsing without any problems at all. I have had many laptops over the years and for just your basic needs this is spot on. Quidico is currently showing £6 cashback as well.

Much appreciated.
As long as I can have multiple pages open, steam YouTube/iplayer seamlessly, do word processing and general day to day activities, I think this is quite a good buy.
I don't play any games (apart from facebook games) and don't really need tip top tech.
I do have some DJ software but don't use it much.
Any further reviews or details at all, please let me know.
Also, screen and speakers... all ok?

For general browsing and word processing what difference will this make?

Better for him to either save the money or replace the HDD in this with an SSD and pocket some change, as that would be the most noticable upgrade for uses such as this, in my opinion at least.

Can anyone tell me how this compares to an AMD Athlon X2 250 processor? I can't find the n4200 on CPUboss.com.

Would the Lenovo be better spec wise than this? Grateful for any advice people can give.

I can see that the Lenovo has a higher res screen but has less RAM and i3 instead of i5.

As stated earlier. Some people want the specs of a £400 machine for £199. You won't get this. You outlined what you use your laptop for and I would clearly define this as 'light use' This is absolutely fine for light use. Very good value for money!

I don't know where Argos is getting the 2.6GHz from.

Pentium N4200 is a 1.1GHz processor (with 2.5GHz boost).
http://ark.intel.com/products/95592/Intel-Pentium-Processor-N4200-2M-Cache-up-to-2_5-GHz

Argos has a nasty habit of quoting "burst speed" as actual CPU speed.
Acer (correctly) calls this a 1.1GHz cpu (14" version linked)
https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/content/model/NX.GJ4EK.003

This is a 6W cpu, designed for IoT & chromebooks, so I wouldn't call this a "proper" laptop.
This is basically a chromebook with a HDD and a little more ram.

"is the £79 worth spending (for an i3)?"
Absolutely, yes. The i3u (15w) is a dramatically more powerful cpu.

25 Dec 16 #24
Is the £79 worth spending?

My absolute max is £299.99 for a laptop as they tend to go wrong and be upgraded after a year or two anyway, so is this pretty much as good as you'll get for £199.99?
Saw a few deals over Black Friday but they were either impossible to get or different specs.
Any advice on this would be great peeps.
Aside from people saying it isn't a "full HD" screen, is there anything to be wary of with this model?
I watch YouTube, surf multiple pages on the net at the same time, use a few apps etc. Bit of word processing etc.
Hope this'll be good enough.
Reviews are scarce, so if people can give personal experience, that would be good.
Thanks.

Ah, what a shame, I found a cracker for £300 but it would be over budget. (Sorry, couldn't resist!! )
I'm actually wondering the same thing - for around this price, what would be the best value available? It's easy to get tied up in 'full HD' but as someone else said, not so many years ago we'd have been paying £1000s for this spec and thinking the screen was absolutely amazing. My eyes have only got worse, so I doubt I'd notice the difference too much.

people on here will always pick fault with any bargain ignoring the price. But for 200 quid this seems a good deal, even currys best effort around this price would give you a celeron processor. For someone with a few quid more argos have a lenovo for 269 that has i3 processor and 8 gig.

no one said the screen is bad, the laptop I am typing on is also 1366 x 768 pixels and its fine. Its six years old though so you just expect the screen res to be upgraded like everything else is.

I voted hot and I think its a good price, I paid more than this new item for a display model lenovo g550 pentium dual-core t4300, 3gb ram, 250gb hdd and 15.6" screen, and windows 7. oh and no hdmi port.

As always do you own research.

Appears to be a good price for what you get, almost disposable at £3.85 a week.

Had shocking CS from Acer and Argos in the past when I bought a laptop from deal on here with a 3 year "warranty"

Was cheaper to buy a refurbished hp from newandusedlaptops than fix the alleged fault. Which has done me 3+ years now

Seems to be a good price for what you get though - hot!

Anything with more than 720 lines/pixels horizontally qualifies for the standard 'HD ready'. So there are displays even more old fashioned than this which are supposedly "HD".

Bit out of date standard now.

Any deals on eye tests or laser surgery to upgrade my eyes? I watch content on my TV at home and a tablet when travelling.

Not sure where this obsession with HD has come from really. Did people complain about their CRT and Trinitron TVs at the time?

Anyone with any technical knowledge know whether these specs are good for the money?

Not a typo. It seems to be common practice for laptops with 1366x768 displays to be sold as high definition, even though you'd really struggle to find a laptop with a lower resolution display.
