Hmm, seriously considering swapping my gaming laptop's 500 gb storage to ssd (I already have 128gb m2 ssd for the os and a handful of games which is fast filling up)

Would this just be plug and play assuming it fits in the case? I upgraded the RAM myself and getting access to the internals took an age being an hp pavilion, with what felt like a hundred screws and panel popping for an amateur!
liveinabin to dunc360
1 Jan 17 1 #28
It pretty much is that easy, yeah. You'll need to format the drive but any recent Windows will do that itself. As for fitting it, these SSDs have the same screw holes as standard 2.5" hard drives. If the drive you're replacing is a larger 3.5", then you'll new one of the many enclosures that can be found cheaply on eBay.

I swapped out my 1TB 7200rpm HDD for a 480 GB SSD.
The SSDs are a little thinner but they normally come with a little stick on spacer to make up the difference. I too have a 128GB M.2 NVME SSD for the OS.

This. It is why I posted about the MX300 750gb at £105 as well a month ago. It is worth letting people know that it isn't a great deal and that odds are there will be a better deal in another flash sale at some point.

Thanks for the support. I was getting bashed for my comment lol I mean its not like that price was a year old or something. It was very recent. So it made sense to mention it.

If I were you then I would just wait, there's bound to be something else that will pop up.

I really wish people would not post this not so good deals in SSD. I mean come on, time machine joke aside, we all know that this is not a real price and not the best price. This is BX which is not better than MX also.
This is not a good deal just because SSD prices are up now. A good deal will be at 80 for 480 and 40-45 at 250.

That was Black Friday. It was only available for one day. Since then SSD prices have gone up. 120GB is now £40+, 250GB is approaching £70. This is 480GB for under £100 from a major retailer and it's in stock.

If you have a Seagate hard drive (internal or external USB) - you can download Seagate Disk Wizard for free which is a basic no frills version of Acronis True Image. To use you need to have a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive connected to your PC but it doesn't have to be the source or destination drive.

Why would consider moving off HDD at all if its only for storage?
elphantasmo
1 Jan 17 #38
I've just had to replace one of these after about 18 months due to repeated file corruption.
Every test I ran on the drive came back clear, even Crucial's own tools said that the drive was in good health and had used 1% of its life. Then it failed terminally.
It has a 3 year warranty, but I can't find my original receipt... :-(

carl01869 to plath
1 Jan 17 #20
Have cloned 100s of machines not had problems with acronis. Adding heat, if you are running a hdd any ssd is a massive upgrade
SFconvert to plath
1 Jan 17 1 #21
Not sure if it's still the case but the free macrium couldn't resize the original partition. So for example if your HDD was 500gb and you had a 240gb Ssd, you have to resize the HDD partition first, I used partition wizard.
I have a feeling acronis does the whole thing for you, as long as your HDD has enough free space.
spamcan61 to plath
1 Jan 17 #36
For 'cloning' from a large HDD to a smaller SSD then I've found Acronis much easier to use than Macrium, the former will even let you select individual folders on the source drive to 'clone'. I download Acronis True Image HD 2015 from their website and buy a cheap key from this eBay seller (usual disclaimers):-

Hot deal - I wish people would stop complaining about the increases in prices as though it had never happened before, we've had the same sort of price rises with ram and consumer electronics for years and years..... tech price increases is not a new phenomena, it's happened numerous times but as things usually go down and down it tends to be a shock when it goes up for a change.
Javz to spannerzone
1 Jan 17 #33
True, however RAMs have gone up in price mostly due to newer versions - DDR, DDR2, 3, 4 etc and since this is old stock and not 3D NAND the complaints seem justifiable. But with storage, demand and production has always affected value, like the flood a few years back.

If you don't like it, don't buy it. But people are entitled to their opinions too

Only just brought my gaming PC back up to spec with a 250gb SSD for OS and certain games.

This would be perfect to run alongside it as my secondary drive instead of my 1TB HDD...temptations
Jediben

The price of 2TB ssd needs to come down before I consider purchasing more. I have 12gb of storage on HDDs and can't consider moving to solid state while capacity would be lost.

Could you not just resize the system drive to say 50-100GB (for OS + programs) prior to cloning?
furi0n
1 Jan 17 1 #24
For those that don't have access to cloning software and wish to transfer the whole system from an old drive to new - windows 7 and 10 allows you to create a system image.

In Windows 7 you'll find this feature under Windows Backup. Bizarrely in Windows 10 its somewhat obscure, but you'll find the feature under File History.

From my experience it works as expected with a minor annoyance, the restored image on the new drive creates a partition equal to the size of the original drive, leaving free space an unallocated. This can be amended using freeware partitioning software. I used AOMEI Partition Assistant, fast and simple.

Goes without saying the software mentioned in earlier posts is just as affective if not better, thought it's still worth mentioning an alternative that is in-built with Windows.
malachi to furi0n
1 Jan 17 #25
Macrium Reflect doesn't leave unallocated space like Windows Backup tool. Better off using Macrium straight away instead of using Windows Backup tool then using a 3rd party tool anyway.
spannerzone
1 Jan 17 #23
Yes Acronis easily allows you to clone to a different size drive which is great for SSD cloning which are usually smaller than the drive you're cloning.

Windows 10 may not work with earlier versions of Acronis, I found 2013 tempermental on Win10 and updated to Acronis 2017 when it was being sold cheap recently.

gowf to TypicalAsianFindingDeals

SSD is based on flash NAND which is produced in ... NAND factories. NAND is used in things like flash drives and often in things like mobile phone storage and so on. There is currently a massive demand for NAND particularly in the Far East due to massive growth in mobile phone use. This is apparently the reason.

Incidentally this is crucial's older generation of ssd and they are moving purely into newer 3D NAND (MX300 series). As someone suggested earlier, this is essentially stock clearance. BX200 is based on old 2D planar NAND which may be less reliable. Speed differences are negligible for most users.

To put it in context, the difference between 3D and 2d is outlined by samsungs 850 Evo and 750 Evo series. 850 is industry leading.

Voted hot because there isn't anything better for now but in the grand scheme of things it's not a great deal.

I agree wholeheartedly with this.

Unless you have a specific application which benefits massively from as much drive performance as you can give it (most people don't have this requirement and if you do, you'll almost certainly know about it), which model of SSD you buy really doesn't matter from a performance perspective.

Pence per GB and reliability are far greater concerns for the average SSD buyer than outright performance. The majority of the performance advantage is in simply having your OS and programs on an SSD, not which model of SSD you have them on.

EDIT: Heat added, OP. This is a good price for a 480GB drive considering the current SSD climate.

I think these BX200 drives are going to be shifted cheap.
Does anyone think it will see the same price cut that the BX200 960 had a week or so ago?... Right after that "Sale" Amazon stopped stocking the BX200 960's. A similar per GB price would be around £80... Even at the price you see now its not bad. I also agree with Stuellis, the act of moving to a SSD is huge, while this might not be their high-end drive it is more than ample (and probably too ample!) for any user to spot the difference when buying something much better.
minicale
1 Jan 17 #6
These are the low end crucial drives hence the low price.

Nice find op, really good deal considering the prices of ssd's are ment to be on a rise. In advance to those who are gonna say its speeds are much slower than 'modern ssd's', do take into account that this is just £93 unlike a modern ssd at 480gb.
