Looks good to me. How does this compare to something like a samsung galaxy a5? better or worse?

Very slightly cheaper at geekbuying, but I've never used them so can't comment as a retailer.

Really tempted by this as been on look out for last few days and seen all the Xiaomi deals posted on here.

I've also been looking at this phone as I like the 5" size can anyone comment on the differences between this and the Mi5 apart from small variation in price. Their range is somewhat confusing now for a layman like me!!!

Use GSMarena website to compare.
Mi5 is a lot more high end compared to this.

It was a real toss-up for me between this and the Mi4C as they are both excellent phones for the money but have their pros and cons. I really wanted a 1080p screen and better CPU/GPU so I went for the Mi4C, but a lot of specs on the Redmi 3S are better (Band 20, microSD support, bigger battery).
The Redmi 4 has just been released (the "Prime/Pro" version sounds superb) but it may be a while before they are available in stock in the normal Chinese retail outlets.

Using it to post this comment. Had it around a month now from ebay for £150 from a UK seller. Cannot fault this phone, for multitasking and games etc it's superb. One thing I'd say is that the snapdragon 430 is a tiny bit on the slower side, but if you don't mind being delayed one or two milliseconds (which, come on, no one minds) then you're all good!
P. S. Camera is very average, probably worse thing here, but gets job done

Am using one too. Camera is set to medium quality by default, you can set to high from camera menu. Doesn't make a huge amount of difference but I definitely think it improved it a little.
Overall this phone does nothing badly. Good find OP

Doesn't support many bands compared to the standard Redmi 3

I think the Redmi 3s global supports more bands than the standard Redmi 3, I thought that was one of the advtanges of it?
The Redmi 3 is a great phone I just broke the screen on mine and have ordered a 3s, this the is largest phone I am happy using, any bigger is just too big for me, feels great to hold and good battery life.

Amazing phone. I bought it for £150 from UK on ebay, so this is a fantastic price. The camera is not sharp, but good enough for the average user. Speed and battery life is amazing. My one is the 3S prime (which is the latest 32GB / 3GB version with snapdragon 430), also has fingerprint scanner at the back. Even has dual sim or SD card slot... Overall, excellent value for money.

Does anyone know if you can use sky go on the international version or the standard version (no band 20 800mhz 4g band) that's running the official stable global ROM that supports OTA updates? I ask because I stream sky go a lot on my phone.
Thanks in advance, Ian.

Got mine 3s today but when setting it up the UK wasn't an option its supposed to be the international version anyone else have the same issue?

Yes same here - my Geekbuying one plopped through the letterbox yesterday. Even after doing the OTA MIUI 8 update the UK (and US etc) didn't appear in the locale dropdown.
I've selected Falkland Islands for now. Doesn't appear to affect anything, as I've setup Google/Facebook/Microsoft on the phone no problems.
Loving the phone so far, especially as my Samsung S4 Mini died last week (hardware failure) so I was stuck with my ancient Android 2.2 device, a HTC Legend. Just about worked, just....(most apps blocked due to Android 2.2 being too old)
Bonus for me is the notification LED at the bottom. Didn't realise it had one. I really missed that in the 3 years I had my S4 Mini - a pretty much invaluable feature to know when you've a new WhatsApp/Txt or missed call.
Oh, and Geekbuying were ok. I ordered on Nov 5th, was shipped on 18th and arrived on 24th. No customs or anything just arrived with the normal Royal Mail post. I had to email them to give them a prod as they hadn't shipped it after a week, but I think that's common with a lot of the Chinese vendors - they hold onto it for a while if you choose the default shipping option to make the more expensive ones seem more attractive.

Mine doesn't seem to be Global 4G. In town now where my Samsung S4 Mini was always LTE and this is showing H+. Investigation required as I'm sure it showed 4G at home (where I have terrible signal)
