Xiaomi Mi Max - 3GB / 32GB - 6.44 inch screen

First time I have seen this phone for under £150.

The gold and silver international editions are available for this price - a lot of phone for not a lot of money!

Snapdragon 615 + 2GB RAM vs 650 & 3GB RAM.

Just go down the spec sheet and compare.

Its the massive screen that makes it so wonderful lol
I bet in 2 years time a 6.5 inch phone is normal especially now the mix has done it without the big bezels. I can't tell you how many people bought my Samsung mega phone after having a try of it, its not as big as you think and fantastic for watching catch up tv games etc.

It does. I have this phone and I'm using it to type this. Simply, I love it. It scared the hell out of me when I unboxed it for the first time and its occasionally cumbersome, especially with a case but I don't think I could ever go back to a smaller one now.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the lack of Gorilla Glass on the Note 3 is a drawback...

I have this its a great phone for the price. It wont work on o2 giff gaff or tescos bands, you will need to be a little tech savvy to put google play on so non chinese apps run. There is a static noise on these sometimes when playing video etc a well known hardware fault and navigation is a bit funky the first time a tried it. Camera is good in decent light terrible in the dark. However the screen is great and the 3 day battery outstanding.

I buy from Geekbuying a lot, but they can be a bit slow. I didn't know we were allowed to post deals from them on here. Pity I have just bought my son a Note 3 Pro International edition (to replace the one he dropped!) as this would be perfect for his 6ft 3inches (that's his height not his hand size, by the way)

Been running this phone for a week now.
Battery life is stunning
No chinese apps were insytalled on the international rom
It updated to Miui upon first switch on
I run Nova Launcher so it looks and runs exactly as my old Nexus 5
Camera in normal light is good, in daker situations its grainy.
No problems running Navigon as my SatNav, locks on and runs fine
Play store runs fine.
Recommended.

Hell, I paid 215 for mine last week from a ebayshop seller in London, but came fully setup and with a years warranty.

Great phone and 4G was working on Three in the town of Cardiff. But no 4G cover were we are, typical.

Slight bigger than my original Huawei Mate (6.0/6.1inch) size wise.

Good upgrade for me as the mate was showing its age and the 1G was struggling.

I got mine (64gb) from gearbest about 3 months now, using it on three
Able to get 7h+ SOC and 60mb+ on 4g and same on wifi AC
When I got the device nothing was chinese, was able to select english and using it since with no issues.
Didn't see any problem accessing google play, however some apps claiming not compatible with this device ( like amazon and prime now )
just get the apk from the web, and will work without any issues.
Using it with BT headphones ( Jaybird X2, and sony 770 and 1ABT ) no hissing or any other issues there
Can't comment on 3.5 jack, not using it.
No overheating or any issues I can recall, but do like to be rebooted every week or two for clearing off the memory.
Using Nova Launcher on it, if anyone missing app drawer - also easily can fit 8x8 icons easily on a single screen.
Any question let me know, happy to help
( PS, coming from Note3 after 3 years of using it and note1 before )

Those apps seem to think this phone is a tablet and won't install from Google Play because they're designed for phones only. In most cases you can just install them from the Amazon app store itself.

Argh. i got the 16gb Xiaomi Mi Max delivered for £136 last week from Gear Best. If only i had hung on. Anyway, I am hugely impressed. I had HTC One Max before - the Mi Max is lighter and thinner and although very big fits into jeans and suit jacket pockets fine. The MIUI operating system feels like IOS and google play was on it so i have uploaded all my apps without problems. Only issue i have had is I cant get vodafone 4g on it. When i do a network search is shows 4g for T Mobile and Three (not sure though if its the network/phone or if there is something i can do on the phone to resolve this). That said I am getting H+ and it is uploading internet v quick. Overall, this phone is awesome - it was at 100% battery yesterday morning and having been on it a fair bit yesterday i still have 28% available 27 hours later. I havent seen any UK phone which comes near this for specs for the price.

Currently own the Redmi Note 3 and am tempted by this phone, looks great for the price my only concern is the size of it, to those who do own it do you find it fits fine in your jean pockets for example, just have a feeling that getting this would be really impractical to carry around even though I would prefer to have a larger screen, any insight would be good.

Thanks OP, voted hot and bought. Just hope I can get used to the large size.

Reading around it seems that only a standard charger is supplied with the phone, although it is capable of fast charging by using a fast charger. wenttoabetterplace
4 Nov 16 #93
Is the Mi Max actual able to fast charge? I have the Note 3 (same hardware aside from screen) - and Qualcomm Quickcharge is disabled (presumably due to licensing costs).

Installing a custom firmware does allow for quickcharge though...
lianne21
4 Nov 16 #94
I would avoid the Anker one as the quality of recent Anker stuff seems to be really dire. Check out the reviews for the Anker and a guy has posted a picture of his falling to bits as he tried to unplug it after a couple of uses!

If you have an Aldi nearby, & can get this one for the same price or less - should be fine & at a reasonable price:
Maxtek Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 40w 5 port USB charger £7.99 @ Aldi

Qualcomm Quick Charge support list to see if your device is QC supported - the Mi Max is:

Crossbow
4 Nov 16 #98
But, then again, maybe not! Somebody's went up in smoke here:confused:

40W 5 Port USB Charger with 1x Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Port - £9.99 @ Aldi (instore)

Having read a little about them now, none of the fast/quick-chargers are really safe to be honest.
wenttoabetterplace
4 Nov 16 #99
It may support fascharge. The processor/chipset certainly does. But the only reason I am suggesting it might not is because Xiaomi seem to disable it on all their lower priced phones...and have definitely disabled it on the same spec Redmi Note 3 Pro (presumably due to the licencing costs from Qualcomm).

(I'm not 100% one way or the other  )

Edit - looks like it definitely is QC 3.0 compatible. That makes it a really good buy for the money. Just a shame it's such a massive screen!

Had this phone for about a month now (32gb Global) and overall i'm pleased with it. The large screen is great for media consumption the battery life is truly insane, can last like 2-3 days with a lot of use.

The only thing that's annoying me is the sound quality from the headphone jack. I wasn't expecting perfection but it's pretty poor for a Qualcomm DAC. The volume is very low and the sound is just poor quality. Apparently it's a bug with the global ROM which still hasn't been solved (see MIUI forums).

Has anyone else managed to get better sound out of the Mi Max? Is there a fix? I am using Poweramp as my player.
balmots
4 Nov 16 #121
You mention that the sound is poor quality which is odd. I saw VOLTE in the blurb of specs on the sellers website. That means good quality sound, perhaps it did not refer to this particular model ?
Cantona007

How does it compare to this spec wise also? I really need new phone. My S6 is broke and love that phone to death but everywhere I go seems to be having trouble getting a black screen.

This Xiaomi has better specs all round. The Snapdragon 650 is 20,000 points better on the Antutu benchmark vs the Kirin 650. It also had double the internal storage (32GB vs 16GB), and a 1,800 Mah bigger battery.

Not really sure why you are comparing the two phones though. One has a 5.2" screen - the other, a 6.44"!!

Evening all. May I ask a question of those who've had this phone a while? A year or two back I invested in a 7" phablet, which I put my 3 sim in and it was great for 3months. I don't see well - moving up from the tiny screen on my iPhone was a revelation.

But three months in, a shirty message from 3 popped up to the effect of 'looks like you're using your phone sim in something that ain't a phone; stop it'. And it cut off my giant phone there and then.

So my question is just, is that going to happen with this, or does the mi max pass whatever the test is they use to distinguish between phones and things that are not phones
wenttoabetterplace
4 Nov 16 #135
The camera isn't that great. But the second point isn't entirely true. You can actually install 2x sim cards AND an SD card. But it does require a little DIY (check on YouTube for fitting 2x Sims and SD card in the Mi Max)

List of the 4g UK bands:
EE: B3: 1800 / B7:2600
Vodafone: B20: 800 / B7:2600
O2:B20: 800
Three: B20: 800 / B3: 1800

........

this phone
4G FDD-LTE: 1800/2100/2600MHz, TDD-LTE (B38/B39/B40/B41MHz)

So it appears it will work on all networks except O2

EE the best as it covers both bands

Those who want a smaller display from Xiaomi they launched two new phones yesterday http://gadgets.ndtv.com/xiaomi-redmi-4-prime-3870
Xiaomi seem like a decent company and were (last year) the 4th largest smartphone manufacture in the world with a multi billion dollar turnover. Very popular in Asia esp. China and India.

ps
Anyone thinking about 5" plus phone should pop into a UK store and check if they are okay with the size before buying from China

EE should be the best network as BOTH EE bands are covered.
O2 will will not work EXCEPT on 3g
VodaFone and Three will work but signal strengh may vary in say rural locations-
"As a rule of thumb the lower frequencies are better at travelling long distances so are more suitable for rural areas where there are fewer masts. They also travel through walls better so provide decent indoor coverage."
Depends if you travel in rural location on VodaFone and Three maybe not idea.

Its finding a decent stand for the vehicle with a phone this size.

This stand will fit https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Universal-Car-Phone-Holder-Windshield-Mount-Mobile-Phone-Holder-Stand-For-iPhone-5-6-Plus-Galaxy/32432257253.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.OJQjI9

Hi
As giffgaff piggyback off O2 it 100% wont work on 4g
It will work on 3g if 4g isn't important
3g phone supports: 3G WCDMA: 850/900/1900/2100MHz
Giffgaff (O2): 900MHz & 2100MHz
Maybe look at the new Xiaomi launched yesterday, but you may want a larger screen.

Only if you use a carrier, in which case. Yes. If you use China post 99% of items get through with no changes as they put 'MP3 player, $18' on the info slip. So unless they open it at the post of entry you're clear.

Latest tech is not always better tho in the case of 4G, at home on H+ i was getting 30MB download speeds.
At work on 4G i was getting 11MB download speeds. This is on the Three network.
3G/H+ is more than fast enough for most people.

The network servers read the IMEI every time you connect. The IMEI tell them the make and model of whatever you're using. As long as that reads as a phone and not a tablet you'll be fine.
Lots of people are using them in the UK on lots of networks, so they must be reading as phones.
deany76
5 Nov 16 #159
I think it depends on so many variables for me - EE at home 4 to 5mb download 3g 25 to 30mb download 4g indoors, rural, wifi modem.
Outside the house on 4g iPhone up to 80mb DL
Office indoors and outdoors 90 mb download
But if you find O2 network with 3g works better overall for you I'm made up for you.

The Mi Max doesn't have a dedicated DAC like the Note Pro did although the Sabre in that one was so terribly implemented that it sounded no different to a stock DAC. The Mi Max has whatever is built into the Snapdragon chip but again poor software has messed with the output.

YouTube can be listened to at full volume and it's not even loud. Also system sounds have crackling static before and after they play when you hear them through headphones. Music isn't as clear as it should be and the in built audio functions have issues such as the eq crashing in MIUI 7 and the sound enhancer making it sound even worse.

Everything about this phone is great apart from the audio issues which could be resolved if they just did some bug fixing. I had no idea before buying that Xiaomi has a reputation for messing up the audio on nearly every phone they release.

Anything over £30 and, yes, you get hit with VAT and a service change from whichever carrier delivers as (as they pay HMRC on your behalf before they deliver it). PO is £8, some like DHL can change up to £12.

I'm tempted by a Redmi 4 Prime vs. a Redmi 3S Prime 'International Edition' (both 5"), and this retailer is my current top option in either case (have learned a lot from these hukd threads). The main deterrent at this point is whether getting the International Edition is necessary from a software side.

I use T-Mobile which I could swap to EE so I'm not worried about the network, but this talk about the difference in google play store and so on is a little worrying. I've never owned a smartphone before and I want it to just work for a variety of things without installing unofficial back end software or unofficial alternative apps. I don't know one iota of Chinese, either...

Hi
My brother has just got
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/32685219502/32685219502.html
I wondering is he should have got the 616 processor because in Chrome on a 30 mb DL bbc.co.uk the images take a few seconds to populate.
It was myself that got him the phone and so I feel responsible. The Redmi range seem so confusing is like the old processor (616) was better than newer phone with the (430).

My 25 month old iPhone 6 is nearly instant say .25 second for images to appear in a side by side test.
Very happy overall with app speed opening etc just chrome (have cleared cashe).
How do you find scrolling on the bbc site on the redmi 3?

Yep I think those Redmi 4 Primes will fly off the shelves. At sub £150 thats a great price.

5 Nov 16 1 #179
The gf has it not me but when seeing her use it see fine. The 430 is more of an entry level chip so jot surprised its not as snappy.
I have the 615 in my moto x play and it's not the best tbh. The 616 came out shortly after so wouldn't be shocked if it's because of something not right on mine and the 616 was better.

I imagine the 625 in the 4 pro will be a good upgrade and the extra gig along with 32gb storage means a good upgrade from my x play.

Look at the Mi5 bend test on Youtube, broke like a biscuit. These phones have a great bang for your buck but you do have to be extra careful with them. The Mi Mix is very fragile especially with that screen and as it's basically a concept phone there will likely be some issues. I can imagine that piezoelectric vibrating ceramic earpiece is going to go wrong pretty quick!

The Mix is a concept phone, almost all screen and cutting edge tech! The screen res is 1080 x 2040, so not 4k. But even on a 6.4 screen you don't need 4k! And it improves battery life.

Just opened an incognito tab on my phone (Note 3 Pro Prime). The website opened quickly. There is about a .3 second delay on photos becoming visible - but that is likely more to do with the plugins BBC are using to keep the site loading on demand rather than all at once...

Yep, Geekbuying is decent.

I have also used AliExpress and BangGood (the latter being pretty rubbish!).

I doubt I'll ever buy a UK phone again. These Chinese phones are just too good for the money (although I would prefer them to come with stock Android as an option. MIUI is a bit annoying in some ways - such as with the notification window...)

Still, I am more than happy with my Redmi Note 3 Pro Prime (especially after doing the 2x sim cards AND SD card hack)

Cool, is warranty etc okay? I have decided chinese phones as the Nexus is no more and prices for Pixel/S7 etc are well high.

There are builds of CyanogenMod for this. As long as you stick with SnapDragon chipsets then you can easily ditch MIUI if you want to. Personally I just installed Google Now over the standard international ROM on this phone and very rarely notice any difference. There's a slightly weird bug in that I can't assign a custom wallpaper (seriously, wtf?) but apart from that everything is fine.
Spark
8 Nov 16 2 #244
If you buy the phone from a premium AliExpress seller then you get a full UK and international warranty.

If you buy it from GeekBuying, BangGood etc then it's usually an RTB warranty with China.

To be honest, it's been so long since I unlocked bootloaders, flashed roms etc....and it's just more daunting with not enough upsides!

I do actually like some aspects of MIUI...such as the scrolling screenshot function, and the rather pretty messaging, weather, calculator, clock apps etc. But I also really dislike how Xiaomi have got such great battery life (by heavily restricting background tasks etc).
& the notification window just isn't nearly as good as AOSP.

If the cusom rom process was easy, I would do it in a heartbeat. But it isn't, so I persist

I unlocked the bootloader on my Mi Max because I was having some issues with flashing it (related to the fact that I'm a knob and I was doing it wrong rather than any sort of fault with the phone).

Unlocking the bootloader was simple. I just filled out a form online and they enabled it at their end within a couple of days, similarly to how Apple handle network unlocks on iPhones.

Even though it was slightly more expensive, I opted for AliExpress when I bought mine over the likes of GearBest, GeekBuying etc because I had dealt with those websites in the past and they tend to be extremely slow to send things and offer no local warranties. AliExpress was slightly more expensive but seemed like a better investment in the long-term. Buying it from AliExpress also meant that I had the phone in my hands within 1 week of ordering it.

So did you flash your phone to a new kernel/ROM?
Crossbow

Well, mr_spatel possibly as a newbie to these kinds of deals, & who didn't read similar past threads either, wouldn't be aware of this.

I think it should always be mentioned in the initial deal post.

Just the standard official global ROM. I could technically flash anything I like to it now but I've never really been into custom ROM's personally and tend to avoid them whenever I can.

So with an unlocked bootloader, I can install Cyanogen directly over the top of the ROM on my phone...with no need to install a different kernel?

MIUI goes so much deeper than just a launcher. It affects everything...(and not in a good way when it comes to background task management or notifications)
Spark
8 Nov 16 #256
Yeah, you would just reflash it. You can actually do it without a BL unlock as well if you want to. You put the phone into a kind of debug mode using the power and volume rockers and that temporarily disables the BL protection.

I've seen first hand it's aggressive on task management etc.
What's your thinking on the negatives of this? I know not either way so curious.
Cause I think MOST normal people wouldn't notice / be affected and the launcher is the real (especially visually) difference to stock android people will notice / want and need to change

8 Nov 16 #260
Any idea how? Do I need to email them?
wenttoabetterplace
8 Nov 16 #261
I have found that some apps stop notifying me of things - and I specifically have to authorise some widget based apps to load on startup (otherwise they never autostart...and the links remain broken. BBC Weather and iPlayer buttons being a perfect example).

I think MIUI only keeps a max of 4 apps loaded in the background...all others get closed. So it isn't fluid when switching to older opened apps. Oh, and the RAM usage is extraordinarily high (1.5GB on idle - more than my Windows PC!)

The other problem is that when playing iPlayer Radio, the notification in the notification pane is just a narrow horizontal bar - rather than the much more elegant iPlayer box that says the artist/coverart etc).

Basically, MIUI just makes the phone feel less smart. & if I could get my head around flashing things without wiping IMEI numbers etc, I'd definitely do it.

(P.S. there is an option in settings to disable all MIUI background task handling. But I still have notification issues with some apps)

You can create per-app exceptions. Go to the "Security" app > "Permissions" > "Autostart" then go to town, select all the apps you want to allow running in the background.

I had a problem with HD Widgets freezing, not good when it's supposed to be telling the time! The method above fixed it completely.

Do you get "Can't load image" when you try to set wallpaper? Try reverting to system launcher, then back to Google launcher. It should allow you to set wallpaper again. You can also set wallpaper whilst in System launcher and once you switch back to Google launcher, the wallpaper should stick. Switch launcher via: Settings > Installed apps > Defaults (cog icon at bottom) > Launcher.

Setting wallpaper via gallery or MIUI settings, seems to affect all custom launchers. I assume it's because whatever needs to be running, in order to apply wallpapers on MIUI is within the system launcher. Switching to system launcher and then back to custom launcher must activate it again and applying of wallpapers works as it should. However, if you restart your phone or if a long time has passed, then I think trying to apply wallpaper will get "Can't load image" again.

Switching back and forth between launchers won't reset your Google Now launcher settings but if you're worried about messing it up, try long pressing a blank part of the screen. A 'wallpapers' option will appear at the bottom. If you select the wallpaper using that option, it should work fine (assuming that beforehand you were trying to set it via MIUI settings or gallery app).

Their online chat. They also told me that it ships from Shenzhen to Hong Kong first (but they haven't sent it yet, they will do this next week) and that it wasn't in stock

"On the product page it states, "Item will ship in 3-7 days" and this is why. At any given time, we have over 20,000 line items in stock in our physical warehouse. In addition to that, we have 90,000 items in stock locally at various factories that we have a direct relationship with. The inventory on our site is real-time availability of stock to purchase. Once per week, we send a courier to each factory to pick up current orders and then ship them out from our facility. This always gives us the added benefit of purchasing only authentic goods direct from the maker and the ability to inspect the quality of what we're buying before it is released to the customer."

POSITIVES
- Good display
- Smooth performance
- Fairly fast fingerprint reader
- Good sound quality
- Excellent battery life
- Good camera for the price
- MIUI is enjoyable to use once you get used to it
NEGATIVES
- No U.S. availability
- Lack of U.S. 4G LTE support
- Shockingly poor build quality
- Less than average sunlight readability
- Quick Charge 3.0 charger not included in the box
- Image processing has some minor quirks like oversharpening
- Hellish bootloader unlocking process
- Potential Google apps and DRM-related issues on imported units

I knew the build quality was known to be a bit rubbish Steve but you can't expect iPhone quality at budget price I guess. I have seen a few reviews saying that it's fine too so maybe it's just opinion at the end of the day.

Here is full review
steve1221
10 Nov 16 1 #327
Well, yes, expecting iPhone quality from a China phone is going to be disappointing

I read most Android Authority reviews, don't know how I missed that one? The lack of US 4g support & availability is nit picking. 99% of China phone's aren't available direct in the US, the same as here. The camera can be sorted with a better app, and not everyone wants to unlock their bootloader. But it's a mostly fair review, it still gets 8.3 out of 10!

My son's working in HK and a few of his friends have Mi Max and they love them. It depends on what you want out of a phone? If it's just something to use day to day it'll be fine. If you want to load custom roms and you're new to that side of things, then it might not be the best model to start with. . .

Well, it turns out that Geekbuying is run buy ****.

I ordered this on 07/11 @ 00:30, so 08:30 Monday morning in China. Today is Thursday and well gone 9pm in China, and over these past 4 working days they've done ...nothing. Order still "processing".

I've been emailing them everyday for an ETA and they've not bothered to reply at all. I opted for the more expensive DHL delivery as I need this on 15/11 ideally for a present. Even with DHL it might not arrive but I thought that if they ship it one day after I order it, so on the 8th, it's got a week to be DHL'd to me, so I was hopeful. Being as they've not even bothered to dispatch it and the week is nearly at the end, I can forget receiving it on the 15th (if I even receive it at all).

You realise that message is total bullship? Why would a retailer employ warehouse staff to test the items? It's wrong on so many levels.

I'd sooner they just be honest and say: "We don't ship immediately when you order, or the next day, or day after that or even the day after that. We wait until the end of the week and bulk ship all your orders at the same time. It's cheaper for us that way and that's why we can sell our items a bit cheaper than our competitors.".

If the phone arrives damaged or not as described then you have the same protection with PayPal as you have with ali express as they will refund you. We are aware that when you buy a phone front China you have no warranty, so it's a risk you take. I wish Xiaomi and Huawei would offer European warranty over here on items bought in China as they literally sell thousands more phones..

Aliexpress is not the same as those other sites you mentioned. The others are a separate retailer/company. Aliexpress is a marketplace. The experience in regards to receiving damaged goods and having to deal with customer support in the first place is dependant on the seller that you buy from regardless of Aliexpress infrastructure. The ironic thing is that on the on that Site Jabber that you linked, Aliexpress is one of the next lowest with 22% and over a thousand 1 star reviews which is 20 times more than Geekbuying. Their percentage of 1 star reviews to total reviews is a bit lower but if they had separate sections for each seller/company on Aliexpress some might be even worse. Gearbest gets the highest ratings of the bunch with 66% and 1602 5 star reviews, which is funny because they're perhaps the most highly criticised site on here for bad service. Providing a service, albeit a bad one doesn't mean they are a "scam". With pretty much every retailer, you'll get people who have bad experiences. A website with 60 total reviews is not a good basis to determine that the site "should be avoided at all times" since you have no idea how many successful transactions they have. When people buy something online, they expect them to arrive hitch free. When that happens, they aren't exactly going to be thinking "I should leave a positive review" since it isn't out of the ordinary. However, if it doesn't go as expected, most of them would want their bad experience to be known.

OK hope that's the case then as if not you may get tax added.

I have an 8 inch phone and I walk around speaking into it everywhere and no one has ever batted an eyelid. Even if they did, why do you care ? Surely it's only kids who would make silly comments as if workmates did then they are making themselves look more foolish due to their lack of maturity, are they not? Loads of people have a 6 inch phone now so they would need to be looking very closely to notice that extra .44 of an inch!

If it is with DHL then unfortunately yes you will. And if you complain to Geekbuying they won't care. Continue complaining and they will give you 5$ off your next order of 70$ or more

My supposedly shipped phone shows this tracking info...

Has anyone received any proof of tracking or are geekbuying stalling?

My DHL tracking shows exactly the same. Unless I'm mistaken, what that means is that on 10th November (last Thursday!) Geekbuying booked the courier. It's now 08:35 AM on Tuesday 15th November in China and, accordingly to the tracking, as of now nothing further has happened. That is, aside from booking the courier, the item is still in Geekbuying's possession.

Absolutely shower of a company.

Just tracked mine and says the same thing. Absolute bunch of liars as it would be in transit if courier had it.

My case for phone from Ali express bought a couple of days later still hasn't shipped either and my account says they still have 7 days to post it, so they are just as bad.

Read up reviews of Ali, geek and gearbest etc at the weekend and they are all as bad as each other and lie through their teeth about supposed warranties and refunds etc. I guess the moral of the story is to trust none of them!

Just be sure you definitely want refund spatel as you won't find the phone for a better price that's why I'm sticking with them. You can cancel a paypal claim if you change your mind.

Printed DHL label with track 11 November (I believe that parcel kept in geekbuying)
DHL got parcel from the geekbuying 17 November to Hong Kong
DHL got parcel in Hong Kong 18 November and processing to GB.
This is not expres delivery. I will stop to buy it from geekbuying and I wish hotukdeals ban geekbuying deals!

Update : 18 November DHL sent me a text for charge £17. Why I should to charge it? I paid express and insurance delivery.

Tax?
qwerta369
18 Nov 16 #431
Same here, exactly same tracking information and exactly same £17 text message. I paid it, no choice. I called DHL for a breakdown. They said Geekbuying declared the value as £32.53. So £6.50 is VAT and £10.50 is the DHL handling fee (extortionate).

The item is physically in a plane en route to the UK as we speak, so I asked how does HMRC know how much to charge before they've even received the item? DHL told me that these days they go by the commercial invoice on the package. DHL in HK advise HMRC in the UK of the incoming package, HMRC tell DHL how much to charge, DHL charge us and there you have it, it's all done and paid for before the item hits UK shores and so no delays on arrival. Seems smart enough, and thanks to Geekbuying for declaring well below the actual value paid (at least they're not completely useless). DHL's £10.50 fee though? That's about 10 times what I would consider reasonable.

I have chatted with slowly customer service at geekbuying and explained that:
But I ordered before 11 November and lies everything. Do you know many sales at 11.11?
However, geekbuying offer me refund = $6. I am not happy that. Shall we to stop deals here from geekbuying?
qwerta369
18 Nov 16 1 #433
Yup, that's total tripe. I ordered on 06/11 (07/11 morning in China). They told me all sorts of crap. One time their excuse was that the warehouse in HK can only have those with HK ID cards working there and they have a staff shortage. It's just bullship after bullship..

And here's another thing. The company is in China. The items they sell are made in China. Why don't they just ship them to us from China? Oh, I know, it's because it's cheaper to take them over the boarder to HK and ship with DHL HK rather than with DHL China.
lianne21
18 Nov 16 #434
You are lucky it's only £17 as it should be much more than that. Insurance has nothing to do with tax. The thread mentions numerous times that if you choose DHL you will be charged. Some people called and changed from DHL to standard shipping to avoid these charges.

hi guys here is what I got today - phone ordered on 8th November:

Dear Sir or Madam
This is the customer service from Geekbuying, thanks for your order .
We are sorry to tell you that we just got the information from factory ,
the item you ordered “ geekbuying

we just need to get them from the factory again .
it is estimated that it will be in stock next week.
please don't worry ,once it is in stock , we will ship it out ASAP.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Best regards,

KIND NOTICE : Please send or reply email under the same topic( the first topic we talk) or else we may not solve the problem for you in time.

this is not promising, why let me buy the item if they have no physical stock.

This appears to be how the Chinese manufacturers and retailers work when new models are launched, when I ordered my Elephone p7000 last year I ended up ordering 1 from gearbest and 1 from aliexpress, the aliexpress one was dispatched about two weeks after the 'official' launch date, but it was weeks and weeks before gearbest had any stock available - I cancelled the gearbest order.

My advice to folk ordering a newly launched model from china is to order it and forget about it, it'll arrive eventually - or wait a couple of months till supply and demand settles down, then order.

I'm waiting for the Elephone R9 presale to be announced so I can go though the fun all over again.

All the posts above about no tracking number, wrong tracking number, etc are all very familiar, just seems to be how the process works.

Mind you, this phone looks interesting too...
lianne21
18 Nov 16 #437
Like I said via your pm Spatel, you will get the phone eventually its just whether you are willing to wait or not. You can cancel if you prefer.

Like Infiltrator says, best to expect it in a month's time and be pleased if it comes earlier. Im still waiting on my phone case even being posted by Ali !!
Someone was saying earlier that he got his really fast from Gearbest so if they still have stock, I don't know if they do, you could reply to the Geek email asking to cancel and order from Gearbest but don't buy until paypal have confirmed your money refund.

Anoying! Ordered on 11/11 and still not shipped - just pending. However I do notice that they say on the listing that orders will be shiped in 2-7 business days - which is another way of saying 9 normal days. So even a 'normal' order would not necessarily have shiped yet. Given what's said I do expect more delay. But this is an amazing deal and expecting great service is bound to lead to frustration.

Forgive me, but they didn't offer to dispatch it when you bought it. As fas as I can see it says upfront that they will dispatch 2-7 working days after order. And then you have to add in the "it's China and different" factor.
sslesar
19 Nov 16 #453
If chose express delivery DHL and you pay extra about £1.25 plus fee £17. So this is not express delivery 2-7 business day. Because they kept parcel in warehouse and DHL not picked up more than 5-7 working days. I belive geekbuying tried to save money for multi parcels and average weight for delivery. So that why geekbuying have many deals.

I recommend use gearbest and they are motivates and fast dispatching than geekbuying.

Whoopee bloody doo, Ali Express finally dispatched my phone case after 2 weeks. Ali Express give them 2 weeks to post the item or the order is cancelled which is a far too long imo as the item is in stock so why does it take a fortnight to stick it in an envelope. Not a single email of communication from them and thats a seller with loads of feedback aswell. I wonder which I will receive first, the phone or the case.

I bought this case as it wakes and sleeps the phone, I buy this for every phone I own as can't be bothered to press buttons, I like instant access as I open the phone.

Okay - the Phone was delivered today, looks lovely. Makes my Note 3 look like a baby brother.

Does not support UK as a Locale ... wierd?!! Hope to get that sorted, will look up XDAForums for an answer. Packaging and finish is good.

DHL got it on Sunday (Nov 20) and it got delivered today (Nov 21).

What really galls me is that Geekbuying got the order on the 4th of November and it took them this long to ship!! There was some talk about the parcel coming from Hongkong as one of the things I had ordered had to come from the HK warehouse.

Frankly the support from Geekbuying is not at all impressive. Will I use them again? Don't know!

I got this for my Dad and hope he likes it.

Yeah, good point the 11/11 'event' will have slowed them down even more.

And while we talking about event's in China. Everyone should be aware of the New Year over there (end of Jan). When the whole country closed down for two weeks. Nothing gets shipped but the websites keep taking orders, so when they do start back they have a HUGE backlog that takes them a month to clear.

Ordered on 12 Nov via HK Warhehouse
Arrived on 18 Nov via Yodel
Paid £142.60 and no Import duty.

First impressions (used few days):
Good Camera
Beautiful screen
Excellent Battery
32GB RAM
Very Fast

Bad Points:
Heavy to carry around (Mainly used at home using WIFI)

One issue:

Left running youtube video, phone slept after 2 minutes
When the phone woke up, there was a load sound/noise.
Switched off the phone and no issues since then.

Just look at the crap i am getting this is the 3rd delay now for me 3 excuse from them below.

Dear Sir
The tracking information of EU Priority Mail (Tax included ) packages have been delayed for about a week time , and we got the news from the couriers that EU customs are now very strictly checking all the packages from abroad for the declare value . And they will severely charge tax if they found out the low declaration of Smartphones or some other categories. This afternoon , our manager had an urgent meeting with the shipping courier and told us that all packages will have online tracking information in 3 business days.

Really apologize for this unpredictable situation and curently all shipping channels are all very slow even for DHL, TNT, etc. We will keep looking at your package movement. From what we assume , the custom may charge tax from our customers, but please dont worry that we will not let customers pay tax and we will keep our promise well.
So if you have been charged by your custom office finally, do remember to send us pics about the billing receipt and the related amount of refund will be returned to your paypal/credit card (depending on your payment method).

Thanks for your patience and trust.
Regard
Susan

Mine arrived in the UK yesterday morning via free shipping. I ordered on the 4th November. Hoping that it might arrive tomorrow but not holding out, more likely it'll arrive sometime next week.

Also to anyone looking to change the locale setting of your phone try and see if there's a setting for the Falkland Islands(locale doesn't really matter too much though).

If the customs value declarations are low, surely that is Geekbuying's fault? I never asked them to declare it as a lower value

Why would you say that? It's not uncommon for a Chinese person to also have an English name.

lianne21
25 Nov 16 1 #538
Let's just say 99% of Chinese have Chinese names.
Suzuha
25 Nov 16 #539
About Chinese names, it is supposed to make it easier for people who have trouble pronouncing their real names correctly. They pick names or even just words that sound pleasing to Chinese ears/ with a meaning they like/ has a similar sound to their real name (which unfortunately occasionally ends up being an old-lady name or a "trashy" name). It's between having people potentially avoid them because they fear mispronouncing their name + suffer hearing their name mispronounced, and being judged for not using their real name. edit: Janice is fine imo. I've seen MUCH worse. xD

You can say anything you like. Her name might be Janice, it might be on her passport, or it might just be a pseudonym that she uses for work. Either might be true. If you didn't know that many Chinese people also have English names, you've just learnt something. Hopefully.
lianne21
25 Nov 16 #542
No they don't they have Chinese names but use British names because we can't pronounce them. Considering I took approx 60 -100 calls per day for 11 years from Chinese people I feel better qualified than you to comment.
Hopefully you have learned something today, maybe to learn a less condescending manner . Hopefully
lianne21
25 Nov 16 #543
Spot on. It's so if we need to return their call we can actually pronounce it and say who we spoke to. It works very well and makes life much easier for both of us.

Mine came precharged, not entirely sure how much it had when I turned it on though. I've left it to charge for about an hour and using an old phone charger and a decent charge cable and the charge led has gone from yellow to green.

That's the best attitude, I'm doing the same with my phone case even though it means I can't take my phone out until I get it or it will get scratched in my bag. It's such a shame that postal services stopped taking stuff with batteries as you can check where stuff is a lot better. If any of you aren't familiar with MIUI there's a "one-handed mode" feature which you can enter by swiping across, below the screen, from the centre home button out towards the right or left.

Also, in the recent apps menu (bottom left key) if you're seeing just the program icons, you can pinch zoom in to give you a nicer preview window look instead. MIUI 8 added a shortcut to switch the views (top right).

Beware, your phone may not have an official Xaiomi ROM. I ordered mine from the Geekbuying Spanish warehouse and it arrived this week with a non update-able Chinese ROM, made to look like the international ROM. They installed Google services and even changed the name of the ROM to show "global" in the title but it's definitely a vendor ROM, presumably installed by Geekbuying and passed off as a genuine Xiaomi international version phone.
Pateo
1 Dec 16 #630
I'm not very savvy when it comes to the nitty gritty details of tech stuff! So what information under this phone's specifications screen should I be seeing to show I've got the correct ROM etc? That's to any of you techies? Thanks
andymac66
1 Dec 16 1 #631
The fact that I couldn't update the ROM using the onboard Xiaomi updater made me suspicious so I Googled the ROM name (which can be found in "Settings" - "About Phone" - "MIUI Version" The consensus on the forums was that the ROM was a vendor ROM not genuine Xaiomi.
lianne21
1 Dec 16 #632
So what version do you have?
lianne21
1 Dec 16 1 #633
Don't worry ours are fine and have updated no problem.
andymac66
1 Dec 16 #634
It came with "miui global 7.3 stable 7.3.11.0 (0mbccndc)" installed. After a lot of faffing around I've managed to get a genuine version of MIUI8 installed via the updater on Xaiomi PC Suite. I had to install Google services manually because as far as Xaiomi is concerned, it's a Chinese phone.
lianne21
1 Dec 16 #635
Are you on 8.1 now?
How much did it cost you from EU warehouse?
andymac66
1 Dec 16 #636
Yes, I'm on 8.1 now and feeling more relaxed that I have an official ROM! It was $209 from the EU warehouse. Obviously I could have got it cheaper buying from the China warehouse (and ironically I probably would have got an international version phone from China). I needed it quickly as I was without a phone and didn't want to wait weeks for it to come from China. The extra was less than the potential cost of VAT - though it seems most people didn't pay VAT on the non EU phones anyway.
lianne21
1 Dec 16 #637
I see, glad you got it sorted now. Yeah the value on them was put @ $20 so no one paid vat.
Great phone isn't it

Mine arrived a few days ago, long wait but well worth it. Loving the phone.

Quick question....the 3 buttons at the bottom (home menu and back) are very dim when lit up. I cant seem to find a way to brighten these. You can either have on or off.

Can others who have the phone let me know if their phone bottom keys are also dim and not very well litt up? Not sure if its a fault or just the way it is.

The screen itself is very impressive, great battery and quick performance.
I even prefer the standard MIUI and standard launcher. The only bit I would change is the option to resize the app icons.
Oh and the call volume could be a little louder.
lianne21
2 Dec 16 #644
Did you see you can also change the order of the three bottom keys too which I thought was great as some people are used to having the back button on the left, nice to have the option.
I wouldn't say mine were very dim, not super bright either, just about right I'd say.
Yeah noticed the call volume was tad low when talking yesterday, shame you can't turn that up isn't it.

- SD card put in SIM slot 2 as don't have 2 sims - put in correctly but phone does not show it in storage option

3 Dec 16 1 #647
When you're in 'Contacts' long press the menu button (bottom left capacitive button). It should bring up contact settings. There should be 'Display preferences'. In there should be a toggle setting for 'Show SIM contacts' which is probably currently disabled for you.

If you plugged in microSD card whilst phone was switched on, you need to reboot. If it was switched off and still isn't showing, try the suggestion above and ensure it's clean.

Ordered one from aliexpress £138 with standard delivery ($10 new customer discount code) and there's 9.6% quidco today so potentially £125 or thereabouts. Although quidco is tracking £17.65 - which is 9.6% of the $175.99 price but quidco seems to be confused about the currency?

Was waiting for Elephone to launch the R9, there's a message appeared today that its about to go on presale (again...) - might still go for one then decide between the R9 and the Mi max, or maybe I'll wait for feedback on the Elephone S7 that's been shipped - similar spec to the R9, so if the S7 gets poor reviews I'll give the R9 a miss.

P.s. If ordering fro aliexpress, change shipping destination to USA to avoid the extra warranty charge, the change back when in the shopping cart.

Finally got my phone case, it just arrived! What a cracking quality case it is too, wakes and sleeps my phone too, I LOVE it !!

From arriving at GB to delivery took 4 days so I thought your phone would have arrived today tbh. It's often the luck of the draw with customs and I've seen one person who ordered the same as the rest of us on a forum had theirs delayed as that's the one customs decided to hold back, probably to check it out for value or drugs reasons etc so possibly you've been the unlucky one on this occasion and it's been delayed a few days, who knows. Hope it comes soon for you as it's so frustrating waiting on something you're dying to get your hands on isn't it.

My case

Best quality case I've had so far and I had 12 covers for my last phone lol. Magnet to hold it closed so it doesn't open in my bag too. I always buy the case that wakes and sleeps the phone as I cant be bothered faffing about with fingerprint scanners and buttons etc. Even the stitching on this is immaculate ! I'm off to order another one in a different colour now

5 Dec 16 #663
2-4 weeks is normal to get stuff from china/aliexpress, geekbuying can't dispatch within 4 weeks, still taking orders I see and promising shipping in 4 days.
Also with Aliexpress you do have some redress if the phone isn't what you ordered/or broken, the seller doesn't get paid until you've got the phone and are happy with it.
Ogre
5 Dec 16 #664
Its a nice case but I didn't buy a new phone with a fingerprint scanner so I could not use the scanner :-)
dreadzone101
5 Dec 16 1 #665
I think the listing just has the wrong product images. The one in the pictures is a Mi5, which has its fingerprint sensor at the front and a physical button whereas Mi Max has 3 capacitive buttons. Here's another listing of the same case with the correct product images. It doesn't cover up the fingerprint sensor. A case made for a specific phone wouldn't be designed like that.
Ogre
5 Dec 16 #666
Ah, that makes more sense.
lianne21
5 Dec 16 #667
It doesn't cover any of the buttons scanner or ports. The pictures should show this so you can still use your fingerprint scanner. I'm not interested in the scanner I think it's a bloke thing as I've never met a woman who wants a phone with one

Normally yes but I'm just pre warning you that due to black Friday you will wait longer until the postal service has caught up. I just waited 4 weeks and if you order now with Xmas you will wait even longer. If you do a bit of research you will see there are just as many complaints about Ali express as everywhere else so they are no better.
lianne21

OK google is not working as it should.

If you say "ok Google, call xxxxxxx mobile" or "Ok Google, run xxx app" or any other ok Google command it just tells you it cant do it as the device is locked, when it clearly isn't locked. I used to use that all the time to make my calls. Searching online it seems this has been a bug in MIUI since 2014. Even using Nova launcher doesn't help.

This really puts me off. For some people, spending time hours just try set up, rooting or flashing, it is not worthy at all, even for 1 penny
I understand this is international version, so no Chinese apps, no set up and should work to any UK LTE mobile frequency. But it might be a different version as this one is specifically spelled out that it is an int version.

Could anyone who has bought this specific version to shed the light about this ??
Could this one be used straightly out of the box, no set up, no flashing, no rooting is needeed, no Chinese bloatware, apps/characters ??

Thanks

I ordered from Geekbuying on the 11.11.2016, the stated despatch was 2-7 days. The item has also been on 'presale' in the mean time with a stated dispatch a few days ago - this has also passed without despatch. I still have not got a despatch date from customer services, they tried to offer me a $5 credit to make up for the delay but forgot to mention that this had a $100 minimum spend! I would advise anyone not to buy from GeekBuying - I certainly won't be again!

6 Dec 16 #682
Use aliexpress next time. I order a mi max on Saturday night, dispatched this morning, and it was much cheaper than geekbuying thanks to quidco an a new customer $10 discount - also see above posts for how to avoid the U.K. Warranty charge - unless you want the warranty.

Aliexpress are a marketplace, not a retailer. I ordered my phone via aliexpress and the seller was Mc - mart. Aliexpress immediately kick off their buyer protection and if the seller doesn't dispatch within 5 days they cancel the order and refund your money automatically - although there is an option on their app for the buyer to extend this period.
Not only that, but the seller doesn't get paid till you receive, and are happy, with your delivery. Aliexpress hold the money till you confirm everything was ok.
Plus 9 or so % quidco.

Their app is really good and has all the tracking info and links - whether they work or not remains to be seen.

As with all phones ordered from china on standard delivery, best thing is to order and once you have dispatch notification then forget about it and it'll turn up one day so point panicking that you can't find tracking or dispatch advice, etc.

Why use anyone else? (No doubt someone will be along shortly to highlight all the aliexpress pitfalls...)

P.s. My previous phone was a presale Elephone p7000 via aliexpress, I received it weeks before most other retailers had stock.
oscar72
6 Dec 16 #683
Agreed. I've cancelled my order, now let's see how long it takes them to refund. I reordered from Aliexpress yesterday and already dispatched. I appreciate postal services are busy at this time of year but if its not dispatched then it's never going to arrive.
lianne21
6 Dec 16 #684
Nonsense about the 5 days. They gave my last 2 sellers 15 days to despatch my stuff and they despatched 2 hours before the order was to be cancelled.
Yes we all know they hold the money blah blah but there are reviews from people saying their seller was paid even though they complained.
There are plenty negative reviews of them online.
I've been ordering from China for nearly 12 years and have never waited 2 weeks to have an item despatched so Ali hold my record for slowest service .
