The fans are a 50/50 on whether it's loud or quiet for a start. So that takes some messing with returns. The Memory on a 500gb is not enough which is the comparison to the price of the elites whilst were on offer so double memory wins. The biggest issue whether this is just pot luck again I don't know is the download speeds. The Xbox One S has issues with certain modes. You need to select power saving mode to speed up downloads even then the speed is not true to the downloads. It also locks at low speeds causing you to have to restart several times. To download overwatch (19gb) took over 4 hours. On the same Internet connection the elite downloaded Witcher 3 (40gb) in less than an hour. Now it wouldn't be so bad if you don't need to download often but current gen is a download every time you switch on the console / play games.

James, I've had to many bleeding Xbox's mate and let me tell you the One S is a whole lot better than the original. I actually replaced all 4 of my original Xbox ones with s models and a good few came from the Tesco deal a while back and I had to return a few with various faults but got some keepers in the end. Anyways I ended up trading one in and buying the Elite for the main bedroom and I realised how much I preferred the s models. The elite sounded awfully loud even in sleep mode, it's big, bulky, flexes when you lift it, then the power brick!! Nah the thing went and replaced with a One S.
Obviously this is my opinion but I think with the amount of faulty units I had and I still prefer the S says it all.
EDIT; I would honestly say I've had around 10 original One's and around 8 One S's since this gen released and all the originals have been annoyingly loud in instant on and when in use, unusable in a bedroom environment. I have a One S now on it's side with the vertical stand in instant on just at the end of the bed and can't hear the thing, even when it's on it's barely audible.

thanks for the info, never really noticed the download speed issue myself as I use always on and have external hard drive so I usually download once and in most cases I buy from Xbox app and game is installed when i get around to turning console on.
DCPotato
19 Nov 161#16
i was really tempted by the elite deals myself but not having the brick in the console I own and buying one with it seemed like a step backwards plus HDR and 4k bluray if I ever want to use it. can't say no to **** I might want to use someday.
JohnnyRoller
19 Nov 162#17
The Elite is not the same unit as the original Xbox One. I had the day one edition and sold it back ages ago. The benefit of having the hybrid hard drive to me in itself is a huge plus (Maybe just my opinion based on how junk the S has been). Also the elite controller is amazing and if not needed can be sold for the best part of £100. Making the console even more of a bargain. The only benefit to the S is yes the smaller size and the 4k however many do not require 4k just yet. I bet Microsoft will have a new version round the corner to fix these issues way better holding off.

19 Nov 162#18
I bought the elite as I was not sure to get the S, very glad I did tbh. It's really quiet + i love the controller. I can't say ive noticed faster speeds however.
trakker1
19 Nov 16#19
I agree there has been major issues with the S model but it's worth riding it out for a decent unit. I've had units from Game, Argos and Very with no faults, all mine that I returned was from Tesco when the mega deal was on with 3 games.
The elite is the same other than the HDD and Controller. The hard drive in my view is a very welcomed upgrade I agree but I'm sure the drives in the S are 7200rpm instead of 5400rpm of the original so will sit somewhere in between. For me the Elite controller was a wow factor, loved it however I did have issues with range. I never noticed this before again until I went back from the S but I found that when playing with headphones in it would make the sound choppy with the Elite, something I now recall having problems with my previous originals. Never have the issue with the Bluetooth S controller but when they bring a Bluetooth elite out I'm all over it!!
They both play the same games and I don't have 4K anymore so look the same and I honestly wanted to get by with the Elite but to me it was a massive mistake once I tried going back.

When you set the Bluetooth controllers up you don't need to plug a cable in for the first time like the original ones to pair them. The gears of war one was made to be bundled with the S model console as well.

As you can see I've had both and upgraded in the last month or two, the S is as silent the fat Halo one ever was, if not quieter.
The fat Halo one had 1TB built in storage which ain't even nearly enough either hence I saved up for 17 and a half years to purchase an 80 quid 2TB external hard drive. Funnily enough that lifetime financial security breaking external HDD also makes moving your games to another console simple and instant, just saying :man:
On to download speeds on the S, erm ok I'll give you that because I too have noticed a marked increase in the length of times on that front thus I tend to leave stuff downloading overnight but I have NEVER had to restart the system in the time I've had it thus far.
Summary: I am very very happy with my new S and more than satisfied that I upgraded, the vast majority of people who bought/will buy the new model did/do so for cosmetic reasons and let us be honest it does look five times better than the old chunky 'VCR' Xbone.
To anyone thinking of taking the plunge one of these new sleeker smarter devices it's a no brainer for me, I highly recommend one at the great prices they're available at regardless of all that old flannel you been spouting out.

I'm only commenting on my experience with the Elite and the S. My experience is that the S is the console that is plagued with issues. If we are comparing on value for money the Elite wins hands down. I purchased the Elite for £179 from Tesco but even at £199 it is by far the better deal. There is nowhere near the issues you are likely to encounter on the S. The controller alone is valued at half the cost paid so even more of a deal. The colour is much more suitable for most people. The only people who should choose an S is those who want 4k. Most people have a TV unit which will fit both the old larger size xbox and the smaller just the same.

I can't decide what to do, I understand that you are backing the S model. The fact that you state you have had 8 of these new consoles in a couple of months worries me a little in contrast to the 10 original consoles you have had over, I presume, several years. I got one of the elite deals for my son for Christmas, thinking I will take it back if a good S deal came up, but you have put me off with having to take so many back in such a short space of time.

Lol I don't come onto this site to save money. Like many I use this site to feed a spending addiction. Hence why if you read what I said I have both the Xbox one S and the Xbox One Elite consoles. Both sitting in my house so I am one of the best people to give a fair comparison. You don't have an Elite console so hence you are not. For the record the Elite is as silent if not quieter than my Xbox one S and the Elite is the console that now takes the throne in the bedroom. I would gladly swap a brand new Elite console with Elite controller for my new Xbox One S. It's as simple as that.
Chasloyal

No I didn't have an Elite console but funnily enough I sold my old black Elite controller which was as good as new because I barely used it and a brand new standard pink Dawn Shadow one too for 100 quid the other day.
I did so because I have an OCD for collecting controllers and thus decided to blow three lifetime's savings on getting the GoW Elite instead.
It will proper look the part sat next to my standard JD Fenix and Crimson Omen editions and my other two dozen or so controllers on the display in my gaming dedicated 'brat bin' in our new abode in rural Lincolnshire shire shire once we exchange contracts and complete the move hopefully before Christmas :sunglasses:

I also have a Wii U with 3 pro controllers and a bunch of limited wiimotes. I feel better spending on the Wii U though as the prices seem to stay the same or increase. i feel you, Scorpio is probably less than a year away so I'm really considering if I should return this one and put this money towards that as I am only buying this as a spare myself for a different room. but then again if the Scorpio is overpriced not gonna buy it till it drops to reasonable price ( yes I know it will be more expensive then the s and that's OK but there's only so much more they can ask for but that is dependant on its features and horsepower) no point in having the s in the same room as a Scorpio as they will play the same games. #firstworldproblems
