Been after one of these for a while and was put off by the high postage from Steam directly.

This allows you to use any TV in the house instead of sitting in front of the computer.
If he is happy siting at the computer then this offers no benefit.

You have to add on an extortionate £7.40 for postage when buying through Steam though.

Personal experience: Bought it at full price shortly after it came out and it is an absolutely amazing device if you have wired (or fast powerline) connection to both your pc and the steam link and a graphics card that is new enough to handle the encoding for streaming (h.264). Only niggle is that you may still have to go to the PC to handle things if a game crashes.
Since I already had a gaming rig, this essentially gave me a console in the living room that beats anything on the market for an extra 30 quid, so two thumbs way up.
However if you have an older machine or wifi only, don't bother as the lag will be too high and encoding in software will fry your cpu, leaving not much power for the actual game.

i actually worked out that plugging the Xbox 360 wired controller i have into the rear usb port actually made it work, so played just cause 3 for a bit and that worked flawlessly.
to be honest though, i can't really see i'm going to get a lot of use out of this - only got 3 HDMI ports on my TV, which are all used, so it's already a faff to get it plugged in if i want to play something when my PC boots in about 10 seconds.
i've only got the one game (JC3) that i'd ever really play with it as well.
I'll think about it .. if the 3rd one i ordered turns up in the next day or so and i can sell it to bring the price down to around £4 quid then i might keep it, but even then, I'm the sort of person who thinks that even at £4 quid, if i'm not using it, it's pointless being in the cupboard

Mine arrived yesterday. Set it up last night. Easy set up I simply just plugged in a DS4 and it worked right away. I connected it up via homeplug as going by PS4 remote play experiance wifi is not great for streaming games. Tried out Jalopy (simple indie title) worked good nice and smooth.
Tried to play Fallout 4 which I couldn't get to work until I went downstairs to the host PC and clicked on ok (fallout startup options). Again this streamed perfect.
Anyone know if them mini cheap keyboard and mouse bluetooth combos work with this? So far I am very impressed with this little device.

I've had this since April (birthday gift) and I have to say it's great, especially at this price!
Just to reiterate, it receives the video stream from your gaming PC and shows it on any TV / Screen with HDMI via local network (WiFi or Wired). It pairs (wired or bluetooth) your controllers and sends those keypresses to your gaming PC. The latency is negligible/imperceivable, to a point that most games you totally forget that you're playing via Link. And it doesn't just stream Steam games, but anything on-screen on your PC (Origin, Uplay, Netflix, browser, etc).
So if your gaming PC is upstairs and you want to play TowerFall 4-player on your TV with wireless controllers, this does it for you. Our kids love playing on this in the lounge and we often rope in friends who are over to play Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes to see how quickly they throw the controller at the bomb 'expert' :stuck_out_tongue: It has made gaming in our household a more social thing.
We've got one Steam Controller, couple of xbox 360 (with ms dongle) and couple of 8Bitdo controllers which all connect to Link wirelessly. I've even installed MAME on the Link as a native app, meaning kids can play Street Fighter without having the gaming PC on at all. For network we use PowerLine adapters which work fine.
I wouldn't play FPS's on it, not because of the lag, but not keen on having mouse & keyboard games in lounge (even if they're wireless) as my FPS controller aiming skills are lacking...

I thought you could use a PS4 controller on a laptop using the cable without pairing by Bluetooth if you wanted. Sounds like it here.
PistolPete67
29 Nov 16#253
If I bought this and didn't bother to use it for it's streaming capabilities, could I use it to simply plug my PS4 controller into so as to play some Steam games on my laptop? I would prefer using my PS4 controller rather than the keyboard for some games.
Actually, I've just read an article that seems to suggest I can use my PS4 controller with my PC by plugging it into a USB port and pairing it as a Bluetooth device, no software or hardware needed. Can anyone on here verify this?
Thanks.

You can add any program to your steam library and it'll stream on the Link. You can't natively run apps on it though.
No matter what it'll always need a PC to piggy back from.
Anyone who wants to run a headless PC to the Link might run into performance problems like I did (or even if you just turn the screen off whilst you play in the other room). it seems the GPU goes to sleep when it doesn't detect a monitor.
apparently you can install kodi on it .. just going to watch a video showing how.

Been using a long HDMI cable to do this for a while, but it's a pain in the hole setting up audio over HDMI vs PC headset every time, and extending the desktop and messing with settings. For £16 this'll be dead handy, not to mention to cable draped all over the show

*I've ordered one and as far as I know* he will need a Gaming PC running Steam (it's a software/platform where you buy and keep your games in) plus a TV that supports HDMI - what the Steam Link does is send the video and audio stream from the PC to a TV. It's also important that he has video game controllers because controllers are not included on the Steam Link.

Anyone knows if this suffers from too much latency or if the image compression does not compromise the image quality? No point on using this on a 4k TV to have it all compressed and looking weird.. I never got the steam to steam stream to work without several visual glitches due to image compression, is this better than steam to steam stream or any better?

i use VPN on gaming rig that's powerlined to a 50Mb max virgin line through a AC1200 router, normaly get 15-20ms ping and 45-50Mb down on VPN connection. Will this be fine for my gaming on Steam Link? not a competitive shooter enthusiast, will plug the Link directly to router via ethernet.

I had one of these, I found that the delay on my controller (360) made the experience unbearable. I was using a wired connection too! Maybe mine was just faulty...
Oh yes, for anyone that hasn't tried it, yes it will stream non-steam games too just fine if you add them to steam!
(With a decent graphics card on the host machine, wired network, and hardware encoding/decoding, on my little box lag much less than 10ms from memory - less than one frame.)
jewelie
29 Nov 161#210
I'm using a little low power "ZBox ID-18" to do exactly that. You don't even need Windows, just install Ubuntu 14.04 (not 16.04 - technical reasons) and steam. Have it set up to automatically log the user in and start steam then just hit the XBox button on your XBox controller to start steam in big picture to either play games natively or stream from your PC, no keyboard required, but you've got a Desktop OS for your TV still of you need it.
It works so well that it makes the Steam Link look amazing value for £16 if it works as well or better.... which has had me trying to find an excuse to get one too (I doubt I will though, lol, there's really nothing left I can connect it to, everything here already streams, lol!)

I've got one of these. The lag, if over ethernet, is virtually unnoticeable and the picture quality is pretty good.

I would highly recommend one of these for anyone even remotely thinking of streaming PC games in your house.
I used to use a Macbook connected via HDMI prior and it was awful, on Wi-Fi or even through ethernet it was constant stutter, dropped connections and frame loss.
However, on the Link (connected via Ethernet) I've had maybe one or two rare instances where this has occurred (like literal 2-3 second hiccups). Brilliant little device, plus it works with my 360 Wireless Reciever, Dualshock 4 (via Bluetooth) and countless other peripherals. It plays some of my non-steam games fine too (Origin, UPlay) and it also runs my emulator games via Dolphin too
Yeh the host PC has to be on at all times to stream the games. Theres a handy little feature too where you can send a wake-up request from the Link to your PC too which will open Steam on the Host PC if its not open already.
HankHandsome
29 Nov 161#197

i've gone for click and collect at my local store. if it does what it appears to do, and i can game on my telly then i'll be happy.

Kind of is in that they have occupied similar price points in the past at various retailers. For example in the last Game deal in which I got a Steam link they were both £27.99 each now the price of the link plummets while the controller stays exactly the same price. Guess the controller is selling well but they have tonnes of links to shift....

So it only casts games launched within the Steam client?
That seems like a missed opportunity.

Hows the latency compared to nvidias streaming? Thats all done in hardware hence only works on nvidia gpus, how does this compare? Moonlight on my phone is almost in perfect sync with tv.
Gordon Bell to jaydeeuk1
24 Nov 16#23
I didn't notice much lag, but I'm only a casual gamer (using Powerline adapters).
Steam in-home streaming can use intel/AMD/nvidia hardware encoding, it's the same encoder(s) being used. Latency is virtually nothing.

Might be worth mentioning - for those looking to play single player games with this sort of setup (so a small amount of extra input latency isn't a big deal), pretty much any laptop with 5ghz wireless N (2.4ghz rarely cuts it) and has a Sandy Bridge or newer CPU (Intel 2xxx series) will handle Steam IHS just fine - I'm sure the vast majority of such laptops have a HDMI output, or DisplayPort.

It allows you to stream what would be on your PC to anything with an HDMI input, like your living room TV. You connect controllers direct to the link (supports PS4 controllers and xbox using the USB adapter for PC) and your control input is relayed back to the PC. One thing I would point out is they are widely criticised for poor performance on even the best wireless networks. Ideally you will be able to connect both the link and your PC to your router via ethernet cable for optimal performance. It's great for rocket league and similar games. Also WoW and Battlefield 1 are not Steam games, though you can "add" them to Steam and they may work over the link. I bought Witcher 3 from GoG, not an official Steam game but works fine over the link.
This is also the best price I have seen in the UK, I got one from steam earlier this year for about £24 + whatever stupid rate they charge for delivery.

Set it up today & am surprised by how well it works.
Using it through a home plug network.
I got my 4th one today, but i've already sold the other 3 so it's only effectively cost me £3.96.
Still think i'm going to sell the 4th though - I just wouldn't use it.
to be honest though, i can't really see i'm going to get a lot of use out of this - only got 3 HDMI ports on my TV, which are all used, so it's already a faff to get it plugged in if i want to play something when my PC boots in about 10 seconds.
i've only got the one game (JC3) that i'd ever really play with it as well.
I'll think about it .. if the 3rd one i ordered turns up in the next day or so and i can sell it to bring the price down to around £4 quid then i might keep it, but even then, I'm the sort of person who thinks that even at £4 quid, if i'm not using it, it's pointless being in the cupboard
Cheers op.
Why's there no point? It lets you play on the TV, which is most likely either going to be 1080p or 4k, the latter of which most PCs would have trouble running at decent frame rates
Actually, I've just read an article that seems to suggest I can use my PS4 controller with my PC by plugging it into a USB port and pairing it as a Bluetooth device, no software or hardware needed. Can anyone on here verify this?
Thanks.
Cheers
Really impressed with it and looking forward to getting it.
No matter what it'll always need a PC to piggy back from.
Anyone who wants to run a headless PC to the Link might run into performance problems like I did (or even if you just turn the screen off whilst you play in the other room). it seems the GPU goes to sleep when it doesn't detect a monitor.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/CompuLab-fit-Headless/dp/B00FLZXGJ6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1480437715&sr=8-3&keywords=headless
This will fix the problem (normally £15)
Thanks!
I have a question though If maybe you can answer good sir, If I fire up Rocket League and stream to this on my tv can I play 2 player local split screen using 2 different controller types ( 1 360 pad and 1 PS3 pad) ? both wired
Went to Cexs site and traded in 4, will just print their courier label and send them off.
They hold the price for 10 working days.
You might have an issue trading in more than one instore but I've never had any issues online and regularly trade in 9 of the same item.
can I just do that though? walk up to CEX and give a wad of fresh steam links and they'll give me all the money?
Making yours free.
There's absolutely loads of information about this on YouTube, Google etc.
was thinking or not to just get it or wait because seems like 2nd gen might be coming soon, but then realised thats probably going to be 4k and I only have a gtx 760 and 50Mb connection max. oh well can't go wrong for £16 i suppose.
i use VPN on gaming rig that's powerlined to a 50Mb max virgin line through a AC1200 router, normaly get 15-20ms ping and 45-50Mb down on VPN connection. Will this be fine for my gaming on Steam Link? not a competitive shooter enthusiast, will plug the Link directly to router via ethernet.

It works so well that it makes the Steam Link look amazing value for £16 if it works as well or better.... which has had me trying to find an excuse to get one too (I doubt I will though, lol, there's really nothing left I can connect it to, everything here already streams, lol!)
Get the odd issue that forces me to actually go to the PC room and sort it out, but for the price it's a great way to play PC games in the living room.
Perfect, thanks gents!
I have a cheap non-MS one which I'm hoping will work.
Haven't received the steam link so don't know yet

Quick question though, would a standard 360 controller work with this?
Theres a handy little feature too where you can send a wake-up request from the Link to your PC too which will open Steam on the Host PC if its not open already.
i've gone for click and collect at my local store. if it does what it appears to do, and i can game on my telly then i'll be happy.
does the PC have to be switched on for this to work though, or will it be ok to just plug the ethernet cable in ?
People are getting easily offended these days don't you think?
Working great over wireless and connect with the xbox one s controller over bluetooth.
Heat
Has anyone tested it through the xbox one s for 4k upscalling?
At least they're showing back in stock again so presumably I will get it eventually.
Cheers OP
So if I go buy 5 from game for £80...sell 4 to Cex for £80. Get me sen one for free for 15mins of my time :0)
(Though in all honesty I will prob just go buy one. Test it out...then leave it on side collecting dust with all other tv gadgets, whilst im lazy n fire up my PS4)
Might take a risk and drive there after work.. might be a wasted trip but meh.
Should be a rule to make sure the description actually contains a product description...
It links Steam...
That seems like a missed opportunity.
Being able to cast & interact with my whole desktop would make it a whole lot more useful. (basically a more powerful & flexible version of remote desktop)
This review states that competitive gamers with FPS games will probably notice it.

They do have them bundled with Steam Credit and Controller though.
Gamestop UK don't seem to be selling it all that I can see.
I want to know whether to go ahead and order from steam (good price except for P&P) or wait.

There's hope yet, if this comes to UK Amazon tomorrow. Maybe Game knew so tried clearing some stock in advance. Hopefully be controller and box for around £35 tomorrow....one can hope
It's like the an idea Shield for £99 all over again (missed that too)
You think Game made a mistake and now doing a U-Turn? I know they have in the past! Gutted I've missed this, was excited then :0(
That's pretty hopeful for a £16 bit of kit tbf
Can I use this to stream video or is it just Steam Games/Os only?
How bad is lag? (Planning on using power adapters if on main Tv, wifi if upstairs.
If so does anyone know if it has audio pass through for the HDMI? (master hd. Audio etc) or just pcm? Thanks in advance.
I couldn't find the terms and condition tick box so that what kept me was worried someone would swoop in and order like 200 or something daft
Please save us the response time, by not bothering.
Edit: never mind found out and done it with the Ice software
The new XB1 pad? I believe so! Just Googled it and found a link saying they updated the Steam Link to support it.
I mean, I can still play most the games on my machine on full settings, but not sure if the streaming will add a large overhead?
Since I already had a gaming rig, this essentially gave me a console in the living room that beats anything on the market for an extra 30 quid, so two thumbs way up.
However if you have an older machine or wifi only, don't bother as the lag will be too high and encoding in software will fry your cpu, leaving not much power for the actual game.
The PC is still doing all the work at the other end.

My son has a gaming computer which he plays WoW on and Battlefield 1...would this benefit him or not?
Tried ringing him but getting no answer.
If he is happy siting at the computer then this offers no benefit.
This is also the best price I have seen in the UK, I got one from steam earlier this year for about £24 + whatever stupid rate they charge for delivery.
OOS :disappointed:
good find op, heat
Anyone else get the feeling the steam link 4k is coming in a couple of weeks?
