Oh dear, you think this is an intellectual discussion? No dear, it's not, but then, I think many of us can envisage you sitting there at home with your 18 cats for company, creaming your kn**kers because you think you are being so clever.
The point is dear, that people voted for Brexit and for Trump precisely because they want to force change, to make politicians from the metro elite listen to them!
For you to say that you chose not to vote because no party represents you is to show that your pseudo-intellect doesn't understand, well, anything. I'm laughing at you now as I read so many ill-thought out comments, thinking you are intelligent enough to ridicule others on this site, yawnnnnnnnn you are so boring.

What? They do. They have white English people working as delivery drivers. Where's the problem with that?
Spark
11 Nov 16 #284
I'm aware of that but I'm also pretty sure that these guys are on the level. I should probably point out that it isn't a traditional Chinese takeaway place and is more like a restaurant. It just happens to be local to me, that's all.

There exists some HK people still doing takeaways, but most nowadays are not. It's VERY unusual (some might say unbelievable) that someone from HK would move to the UK, on a "business visa", to run a takeaway - a dying business with very little profit to be made nowadays, especially since Just Eat etc (but that's another story). You might want to double check that.
Spark
11 Nov 16 #281
Then surely we need to do something about that.

And they're Hong Kongers who moved over here 5-10 years ago on a business visa btw. Their kitchen workers and delivery drivers are mostly comprised of white locals and international students. They don't hire anyone without proper paperwork because they don't want to risk a 10 grand fine.
qwerta369
11 Nov 16 #280
Where are they from originally?

Without wanting to bore other users.. I'll keep this brief. In the 50s and 60s HK people arrive in the the UK from British HK and began opening restaurants and takeaway shops. In those years, as well as years that follow, they employed illegals, mainly Malaysian overstayers, as they needed this cheap labour to remain in business. Years later, Malaysians who got their status became owners and ran businesses alongside HK owners. In the 90s, illegal Chinese mainlanders (mainly from Fujian) filled the gap of necessary cheap labour. Around 10 years ago, these Chinese mainlanders either went home to a now prosperous China or remain in the UK having got their status. Fortunately for them, at around the time they get their status the HK and Malaysian owners are looking to retire and sell their businesses. Former illegal but now legal China mainlanders buy the businesses and are now the owners. They now either employ fellow China mainlanders who remain illegal, Romanian / Bulgarian workers who are legal but are paid an illegal wage, or else they run it themselves just with their family (accepting smaller profits but no wage costs).

The UK government of today and in the past know that most asylum claims are bogus, that most are actually migrant workers who don't qualify for entry by going down the legal route. Certain sectors need workers who will work for an agreed wage that is less than the law allows. The employer needs the cheap labour and the worker needs the work. It's all under the table and it happens everywhere. You can pretend it's not and that all illegal migrants should be banned etc etc., but you're not living in the real world I'm sorry.

That was not my point. My point was that the Nazis were not anti-democracy.

I also believe that just like people fought for the right to vote, people should equally have the right not to vote. In this country for example I do not believe that any party represents me anymore and I don't want to back any of them. What you shouldn't have is a situation like the one that exists in Australia whereby not voting can mean jail time.
Spark
11 Nov 16 #277
That's not even remotely true. Illegal immigration drives down local wages and living standards and causes risks of trafficking, abuse and ill-health or even death in some cases.

The people who own my local Chinese takeaway are not illegals. I know that because I know them but if they were then they should be caught and deported. Western countries tend to bring personal circumstances and individual cases far too much into consideration where matters of immigration crime are concerned. Things need to become far more streamlined.
maggi999
11 Nov 16 #276
The Nazis and their ethnic cleansing are nothing to do with the right to vote!(?)
The Suffragettes, the Peterloo Massacre even the Tolpuddle Martyrs to some degree. All parts of our history where people fought and sacrificed their lives at the alter of democracy so that people like you can criticise and whinge, without bothering to vote - unbelievable!

Wow, you're so prickly. No race cards. Anyway..

I guarantee that there's probably about a 90% or greater chance that your local Chinese takeaway, the one that you use, is staffed or owned by current or former illegal immigrants. It's the only way such businesses can operate as they do. And that's just one example of one sub-trade. Illegal immigration is, in certain circumstances, a necessary feature of most countries.

And what are they escaping from exactly? Mexico isn't a police state and isn't lead by a tyrannical or brutal regime.

I have been there and absolutely saw poverty while I was there but I have also seen abject poverty in the United States first hand. Mexico has no welfare blanket but America only has a very limited welfare system and offers no welfare to illegal aliens.

They break the law hoping that they can hide under the radar for long enough and eventually exploit their way to US citizenship. In effect, they are simply opportunistic criminals and nothing more.

Of course it is. At the end of the day it is still accessing something without permission. If you don't meet the requirements to immigrate legally then stay the eff out.

Not everybody qualifies for legal immigration, so use the illegal route and when they get to the other side are taken advantage of workwise and living standard wise but still it is better than where they came from and stay whilst others follow them. Nothing remotely like stealing cars.
Spark

Nobody said that they should never be allowed to immigrate however there are legal ways to do it and would-be immigrants should be respectful of the laws and will of the people in the country to which they want to move.

If my neighbour had a nice car and I couldn't afford one then would it be justifiable for me to steal his?

No there isn't. America and the EU in particular need to stop showing such subservience towards China. China is the real most powerful country in the world these days, America's current position is just as a figurehead state while the transition takes place.

That doesn't mean however that we shouldn't be applying collective pressure onto China over certain issues and China's relationship with the DPRK is just one of those issues. While Chiba remains the world's factory we still have one bargaining chip left to use and it's a big one. We should try to use it for good while we still can.

Its mob mentality.
You like I have probably met them and dealt with them in same way. Smiling patronising at first, then try to talk down to you, realize you likely know more about the subject than THEY do, so they start ranting expecting the discussion to end if they drop a "ist" or "phobic" bomb, then when it doesn't their voice gets higher almost to scream level. Demanding proof, discounting proof when given (my fave is their whitewashing of Armenian genocide) then when asked to provide proof, theirs is laughable and childish belief in blatant twaddle. Abuse then (you're normally smirking at this stage, of course which makes it worse)
A good example recently of those demanding "revolution" against Trumps election (seriously peabrained morons like the previously mentioned Lilly Allen and Charlotte Church - seen more intelligent week old dog turds) was that bunch of WHITE MIDDLE CLASS morons who were "protesting" Black Lives Matter by shutting down London city airport - when queried why, as no black males were shot - said (seriously I couldn't believe my ears) "Air pollution is racist"
And there you have your protesters against Trump election in a nutshell

Firstly, America doesn't need a Brexit. America is already a free, independent and democratic country. It's very existence is the complete opposite of everything that the EU stands for.

Secondly, America already has legal routes to recruit Mexicans and others to work on farms etc under temporary agricultural visas. Those visas ensure proper pay, working hours, medical insurance and rights. The problem is that they are not permanent nor are they designed as a route to permanent immigration so many Mexicans, Central and South Americans as well as Chinese and other nationalities choose to take illegal routes and go under the radar.

In parts of California and Texas it is not uncommon to meet Mexicans who live in the US legally for 6 months of the year and spend the other 6 months with their families in Mexico. They make a good living as well but a lot of Mexicans feel they are entitled to more than that and therefore seek to break US law.

The usual tripe about anyone who the PC brigade don't like is "Hitler" and "Nazi" - theres even a word for this mentality now - "Godwin's Law" I think it's called.
And who is beating up people in the street, vandalising etc ? Trump's mob ?
No. The anti-Trump loonies.
Used to getting their own way when throwing tantrums (how that repulsive woman got the nomination in the first place over a far better bet in Saunders who would REALLY have given Trump a race) theres even the repugnant Lily Allen - fresh from weeping and saying she'd put up one of the Calais "children" - who wasn't, wasn't 40+ like some, but hey - truth isn't important to them - then decided not to answer door when media said "He's here are you putting him up ?" is now ranting on twitter about revolution, For God's Sake.- typical PC ratbag, theres self-delusion, and then theres these self-obsessed dingbats
Anthony is correct. I'd prefer Trump is given a year or two before coming to a conclusion.

I have nothing but respect for veterans, especially those from the second world war, however this is a common misconception. The German people voted for Hitler and elected his Nazi party. Hitler's goal was never to install a global dictatorship. It was to create a single government that would control the globe, with Germany at the centre.

If Nazi Germany had conquered Britain and the Germany had won the war then it is highly possible that the people would be able to elect the government and fuhrer, that is if you survived Nazi ethnic cleansing obviously.

IMHO, the British choice to exit the EU was absolutely the right decision. Whether or not the Americans were right to elect Trump is up for them to decide. I wouldn't have voted for him but I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Some cash was given and some cash, which no one seemed to report, was received. All votes were democratic by EMP's that you were entitled to vote for, if you bothered. One of those duly elected EMP's spent all his allotted speaking time shouting and criticising the presidents etc. Just because you don't like the outcome of the voting does not mean they are dictating. We did not have to abide by everything that was past, take the working time directive as one instance, and we received many benefits from the EU take mobile phone and roaming charges as one example.
It's the same with the UK government, some policies you like and some you loath.

The reason we joined the EU in the first place was because our economy was in decline. We were the ones being propped up by other member states, now that we have to help others we want to forget this.

The reason people aren't doing well isn't because of the EU, they actually help quite a lot with regeneration in the UK.

We have a ridiculous amount of cuts put in place by government and get screwed over by austerity but somehow the blame goes somewhere else when it's so obvious.

A two horse race with two rubbish candidates is hardly a democracy in my view.

I strongly believe people with business interests should not be allowed into politics, as they have an incentive to advance their own position at the expense of everyone else. I find it hilarious people are saying this is a vote against the Elite. How can a vote FOR an Elite billionaire businessman who doesn't pay taxes be a vote against the elite?!

But I suppose it's what the majority of Americans wanted and I can't see him lasting more than one term.

Who was doing well? Clearly the average Joe wasn't as this was reflected in the demographics of the vote. Remember, it wasn't just British people who voted in the referendum, Irish (Republicans) could, as well as Commonwealth citizens. We already propped up Ireland and Greece, we cant afford it. Especially with more 'poorer' nations joining. My local council couldn't even afford to maintain planting flowers in the local parks due to cuts.

So after doing very well from being in the EU we decided that when it cut up rough we would get out. As part of a union we are expected to prop up other members that are not doing so well in order to eventually prosper from their growth.

We are stupid because we choose to leave the slowest growing trade bloc in the world with ridiculous amounts of unemployment in countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, France? A place where we originally voted for a trade agreement/a common market and now (40 odd years later) is 'almost' one country with its flag, anthem, parliament, currency, lack of borders. It also took 40+ years to even get to the one vote.
