Update 09/08/2016: Our original test was showing an incorrect color depth of 8 bit due to some incorrect drivers on our system, but after some correction to our test apparatus, we tested again the color depth and we can confirm that the Sony X800D do in fact have an 10 bit panel. Also supports 444 chroma.

I'm tempted at that price. Don't know if I'll get better on black Friday though.
Can't really find anywhere confirming if this is 10 bit. How reliable are the links posted above, really needs to be advertised on the Sony website.

Same here, i am in two minds as to whether to buy now or wait a few days maybe argos and tesco will price match each other and drive the price lower like they did with the xbox one s on release day
It's usually done by people that have very little idea what they're talking about. If it doesn't say Sony or Samsung then they assume it must be rubbish. The power of advertising and brand power.....

Seriously doubt this is 10 bit but this is arbitrary if the peak brightness is correct in the rtings review HDR will be pretty much innefective at such low levels add to that no local dimming makes this a poor choice if you want the most out of your PS4 pro.

If this is the UK equivalent to the x800d then this TV is 10 bit.
Can't find any UK sites saying what the panel actually is though. I'm on the edge on buying it.

20 Nov 16#21
Probably fairly reliable in you are in America. The trouble is even if you compare the correct US model numbers to the UK ones that's no guarantee they will be using the same panel. It's very difficult indeed to find out exact information like that. Bit like different sizes in the same range are often not comparable because they use completely different panels.
Not especially helpful information I know, but honest.

I've gone with it through argos for £557.10 with discount code TVS10. Got free delivery for some reason so going to get it delivered next week Monday.
If a better offer comes up through black Friday will be easier to cancel then take the tele back.
Also went through quidco, hopefully it works with the code as quidco are giving 10% cashback for the next 2 hours.

8bit panels can produce about 17million colours a 10bit panel can produce nearly 1billion colours.
100% this isn't 10bit
The numbers on the end are just the colour but this is the correct model, I was in richer sounds yesterday about to buy one and they confirmed it's 8bit,
I'm now going to buy the Samsung 7000 or 8000 depending on price drops on Black Friday, go and look at them in a shop the difference between this and 7000 this easy to see.
However for the price this is a very very good tv.

It makes no difference as i said in a previous post it's peak brightness and lack of local dimming means it will not be a good performer when it comes to HDR.
shaffy_oppa
21 Nov 16#38
Looking at it you can see it's not 10bit and even if it is the HDR did nothing for it because of its poor brightness. Take a look at it in store then look at a OLED or a Samsung KS7+ and you'll see this TV basically doesn't have HDR.
kaiser051
21 Nov 161#39
I enquired about this tv a while ago and after emailing sony they comfirmed it is a 8 bit panel which can accept a HDR signal but can not process it as HDR it is definitely not 10 bit and cannot process HDR

So it's a bit naughty then as it has HDR all over the sales pitch

It's the wild west regards 4K and HDR... manufacturers can say pretty much anything they like within a certain framework, even if it isn't what it actually is. Consumers basically need to be investigative journalists to actually find out the truth on a product these days.

Was impressed in RS looking at the demo's for both the 9000 and 7000 but they wouldn't show me SD/ normal HD content on it so not sure if they are really worth the extra. Had any experience with them. Also I would have to chose either the 8000 or 9000 instead of the 7000 due to the central pedestal. I've heard they aren't worth the extra so it gals me to pay extra just because the design of the 7000 means I would have to buy a new TV stand.

21 Nov 16#46
Personally no experience with the 9000 my budget was 1000 for a 49inch however reading reviews and specs on rtings and other websites the 8000 seems superior to the 7000 but work the 400 quid? That's personal opinion/cash/ use. For me I think I may have to go for the 8000 just going to see what Black Friday gives in terms of discount but I can't see the 9000 being worth the extra, 8000 is probably the best tv before you start to pay money for an oled.

rtings gave this the best HDR Gaming panel you can buy today in this price range and size. People can say "not 10bit" all they like but the fact is it's beating out some TVs with confirmed 10 bit panels and it has no dithering. Although they said we can confirm that the Sony X800D does in fact have an 10 bit panel.
People need to judge with their eyes and not just blind numbers thrown around.
When sending an 12-bit signal to the Sony X800D, 8-bit gradation cannot be seen and our gradient look very smooth, so it can display up to 10-bit signal pretty good. To say if it is a true 10-bit or and very good 8-bit with dithering, it is very hard to be 100% sure and manufacturer are always very discreet on this subject. But in the case of the Sony X800D, we can only say that it can display a 10-bit signal pretty good without problem.
viper1402

I think there is confusion over ability to accept a 10 bit signal and being a 10 bit panel the same happened a few weeks back on this thread the reality being it was never going to be a 10 bit panel.Having looked through a lengthy thread on the highly regarded avforums site it's pretty much the same situation Sony have been asked and will not disclose the panel specs which is suspicious but a distinguished member of that forum suspects it is a 8 + 2 panel, you say multiple test sites this is contrary to the avforums site where they are waiting for a full professional review of the XD80 there are none available(this was 3 days ago) at the end of the day this will be a very good set no two ways about it but if you are specifically looking for HDR at a level where it is going to really work it will be a let down compared to sets that are Premium UHD certified at this time that means an extra £210 for a Samsung UE43KS7500 but who knows what black friday will bring to the table.

I was looking at the KD43XD8305BU (a model exclusive to curry's but I'm sure its the same one). This was next to a Samsung SUHD UE43KS7500 and whilst the colour was not as defined as the Samsung (which is a 10 bit) it really did give it a run for its money the superiority of the Samsung's colour was only noticeable from close up. I am still deciding whether to go for the KD43XD8305BU for £599 or the Samsung UE43KS7500 for £799.
