Please keep in mind that the detachable cables(s) inside the box (my HD518 cans came with both a long and a short one) have a 6.35mm plug and a separate adapter into a more common 3.5mm plug. If you find this inconvenient you can buy a replacement cable off Ebay, starting from ~ £5 delivered.

Just like my HD518s the HD558s are unsuitable for use in a quite room shared with others, as everyone around you will be able to hear the music you are listening to. I would also not buy them to listen to base heavy music, they are not that kind of headphones.

Anyone know how these compare to the Goldring NS-1000?

Funnily enough the one I received already had a foam tip. Works fine paired with the astro mixamp on the XB1.

Sounds a bit odd, you must listen to them at exceptionally low volumes :smiley:
Open back headphones are designed to leak sound as it tends to improve/expand sound stage.
Closed backs typically have increased bass presence as it is self-contained and doesn't escape out the grills.

(My preference is open for home listening)

That looks like a much better option than the one I linked to in post # 10, because of the boom mic. Have you tried recording your voice with this one on your phone/computer? It might be worth investing in a foam pop filter for the mic as well.

I got this for my 598's .... I assume its the same connection. It works great! The only snag is .... its from China, so there is a little bit of a wait.

They won't be used outside so the open/closed difference doesn't matter to me

​I never had an issue with open backed headphones and sound leakage, I had beyer 990s and without you had your head resting on the earcup when I had them on you wouldnt hear anything.

I don't know whether this is because I have my audio lower than others or the beyer 990s are different but its not an issue at all for me.

It is because so called gaming headsets are so unbelievably crap, unless you spend £150+ on one. A nice desktop condenser microphone for £40+ will always be better, but that requires space and a desk for you to plonk it on.

As for cables, you could use cable clips/ties or even shrink tubing to combine the cables on a more permanent basis.

Modmic fills a gap, no one claims it is the non plus ultra. I tried an old version of the Modmic on a friends PC, recorded speech was clear, loud (Windows allows you to adjust the gain) and sounded perfectly fine for a budget solution (eg: no better or worse than my £24 Samson Meteorite USB mic).

​Modmics are bad I dont see why they get so much love, they fall off easily, get tangled up in your headphone wire, have a really quiet output and the audio is average at best.

I just purchased Sony MDR7605 can't wait to hear these bad boys if they are good enough for recording studios then they are def good enough for me and my Bowie tunes.

I agree, open headphones definitely sound better.

In my case sound leakage is a non issue, I just tell everyone else to go to another room. However most people don't have that option.

I had the M50 years ago, sold it since I needed cash, really liked it, have seen the past BFs dropped to £85 or so :laughing:

It's just one of those things. Open headphones sound more natural, more like listening to speakers. I don't really like the isolated feeling wearing closed headphones. But I guess if the environment requires them I'd probably get the HM5's or the M40X's.

Well, here it is. I have no idea how good it will be so, so assume quite bad.

You could always use plastic cable ties to attach the headphone and modmic cables to each other.

For use with ps4, a modmic or something similar seems to be the best solution, just feels like too many wires to me.

Yes, there are after market cables that include a microphone, but the sound quality of those mics will be terrible.

What do you want the microphone for? eg: make phone calls, record voice overs, multiplayer game chat?

If you like the idea of an in-build microphone a unidirectional Modmic might be an ideal solution.

I use my microphone for Skype calls and games. Me being a total cheapskate I simply bought a Samson Meteorite for < £24 at the time and plonked that on the table. It works surprisingly well for the money.

I just went for it, any recommendations on setting up a mic with these? Can a standard inline mic cable work with it
