Hi would these be ideal for me to use at the gym or should I look elsewhere

They are open back so people around you will hear what you're listenening to and there's no noise isolation so you might hear external sounds depending on set volume. Also I'm not sure the velour pads and headband would be best for gym use.

I've got the 555's and they are NOT for use out of the house. They block zero sound coming in, and leak a lot of sound, but this is because of the open-back design.
When I first got mine I used them on a train journey and couldn't have the volume above half way without it sounding like I was wearing speakers on my head. I could also clearly hear people around me talking while listening to music.
The cable is also massive.
They are designed for use indoors. I connect mine to my amp for watching TV and listening to music when others are in bed.
I've modded my 555's to sound like these, and the audio quality is phenomenal. They are a steal at this price. I paid over £200 for my 555's about 8 years ago.

For use in public, you need to use close back headphones.
HD555, 558, 598 all open-back. Open back headphones suppose to leak a lot of sound. It is designed that way to give it wider soundstage etc.
Bear in mind, HD598c new version come out few days ago. Now 598 has both open-back and close-back versions.

How do these compare with the sound of the akg k451? Are these better?
huangxq2 to slamukdeals
29 Nov 16#23
Way better (sound quality wise).
They are not at the same level.
They are different type though. 558 is open back and over ear. AKG K451 is close back and on-ear. The opposite of each other.
The AKG I like is K701, K702 and Q702. They are sister versions and sound similar. They have very minimal of bass which a lot of people would not like.

If you are waiting for the 598s to go below £100, I'd say settle for these because you'd be getting nearly as-good headphones.

I think I will give 558 a try, simple because it is amazon and easy to return.
But I already knew that I will regret that I did not hold off for 598se. I had 598se. I know how much I like 598se.
I did not go for 598c for £89 because it is big and not foldable, not easy to take on commute, and I like open-back.
I recommended 598c to a friend, who follow my advice and bought 598c. He said it sounds brilliant.

Reading online, they are in competition with the audio technica m50x. The m50x are amazing, anyone know how these compare? I assume the 558 are the little brother's to 598?

Headphones are personal.
I know M50x is highly rated.
I tried it last year. I do not like it at all. Its sound is muddier and less comfortable. It has more bass than HD598.
For me, HD598 is way better than M50x. I am not a bass head.

The M50X signature emphasizes low-end and could sound less clear compared to these. Not because they have bass its just the way they are. The M40X are less "warm".

Thanks for this. I owned a pair of akg, and thought they were excellent until they got damaged, so was going to purchase another pair or this. I have the m50x and I hardly use them because they are really heavy. So I reckon these 558 might do the trick. I read that the 598 were £90 on black Friday.

The closed version of the 598's yes.

29 Nov 16#28
Yes, that is the new version - close back version of 598, model no 598c was at £89.
They can be used in public. My friend said they sound very good as well.
I only had 598se. 598se is open back.
A warning, you do not want to use 558 in public. They are open back.
Also those are bigger and heavier than your AKG K451 (These two are not the same type of headphones). They are lighter than M50x.

Also you sound like you know alot about headphones. In Ear headphones, like the sound magic e10c and the Bose sound sport ones that were on offer a few days ago, can they sound as good as these? Surely not right?

Do not go for e10. The sound is ok, not amazing. The build quality is not there. Break easily. Read amazon reviews, see the large portion of reviews who had their e10 break. I bought it, and dislike the build quality, and returned it in the past.
I like Sony MDR-EX650, sound and built better than e10. The silver version is on sale at amazon at £25 right this minute. You want to be quick. Never be so cheap before.

Everything was cheaper in the past haha. I would prefer them at 66. Was going to mod the 558 but apparently it doesn't work as well as it did with the 555
