To be honest this confusion is caused by Samsung themselves. There are acually 2 versions of the TAB A. The one with the snapdragon processor is the older version and actually has a 9.7' screen. Where as the new version released in summer 2016 is a Octa-core model and a 10.1' screen.

TAKE MY POST HERE WITH A PINCH OF SALT - I SUSPECT JOHN LEWIS ARE WRONG!
Be careful, I remember nearly getting caught out by a PCW ipod touch deal a few years ago, ordering only to discover that it was a very cutdown model of the normal one.
Why do I bring this up? Well John Lewis have just refused a price match.
"The item with John Lewis is Qualcomm Snapdragon and the Currys item is Exynos 7870, therefore they are not identical items."
Looks to me as if PCW are pulling a fast one again.
JustLikeArkwright
23 Nov 16#36
I have no idea where JL have got their info from regarding the processor, it's definitely the Exynos 7870.
A number of retailers have it listed as (2016), since it wasn't called the Tab A2, thereby avoiding any confusion with the previous 9.7" model.
HJboss
23 Nov 16#37
Checked and it was posted for £119 I hukd so it must have been £119 at some point to but I've only seen it myself for £129
Grampian
23 Nov 16#38
Vendors are selling both the old and new model simultaneousl which is confusing matters. In this instance JL are wrong and should price match. The 2016 10.1" model is the Exynos CPU and preferable to the Snapdragon.
krazie2004
23 Nov 16#39
I don't think you are right... After your comment, I had a search around for a variant with a Qualcomm chip but cannot find anything. Actually, the JohnLewis site doesn't even show which processor is in the tablet, even the link you sent doesn't back up what you are saying. I think you just had a crappy CS agent from JL.
If you search the mfr numbers from the links you have sent, you will find SM-T580NZWABTU (Qualcomm processor?) refers to the white model and SM-T580NZKABTU (Exynos processor) refers to the black model.
rollzy
23 Nov 16#40
Plus the reviews are the same for both models! They do their best to confuse matters tho.
gwapenut
23 Nov 16#41
Thanks, I'm inclined to agree with you! I think JL are mistaking it for last year's 9.7 inch model, which is a snapdragon.
I've asked them to reconsider.

23 Nov 16#42

Had a good play with mine tonight. Its really snappy, no lag at all navigating through apps. You get the odd stuttering animation but I think that's app secific. Once annoying thins is watching YouTube videos at 1080p and you get borders at the top and bottom :/ Its really off putting at first but then you get used to it. Also the GPU is pretty weak imo, tried World of Tanks Blitz and it was only playable at the low graphics settings.
However I didn't buy it for gaming so I'm happy with it. Turn on within seconds and the screen is sharp and bright.

how would this match up to an iPad air (first gen)???
After doing some research they way you can tell the difference between the new and old versions of the 10 inch tablet is the screen resolution. The new model has full HD and comes with an Oct core processor ( 8 - cores).
Can someone recommend me somewhere else to keep an eye for this tablet as I believe it will go lower then 159.99 but not by much.

If anyone works for a company that uses an employee benefits scheme like edenred, don't forget to use it.
Currys e-giftcard give you 7% off, so order £155 (or £160, multiples of £5) for £144.15, couple that with quidco £10 bonus gives a total of £138.15 for this.

Just for reference, I bought this tablet last week from Tesco for £208 which was the cheapest I could find it for, so this is hot. I decided to cancel my order in the end though because I decided 16GB local storage simply isn't enough... I bought a very fast 128GB Micro SDXC card intending to expand the internal storage using the 'Adoptable Storage' option in Android, but I read it was a risky and unreliable solution. I bought a Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 in the end, very happy with it.

Well reserved at Livingston store yesterday afternoon. Went to collect this morning and they could not find my reservation - they printed off the paperwork but could not find the tablet. Called up the stock room and they had no more in stock. They actually had 4 behind the counter but they were reserved for other people. I asked when they were reserved and was told this morning. I asked for one of those given I had reserved the previous day and it was supposed to be kept until the of business today and they refused. The best they said they could do was to phone other stores for stock! Very poor by Currys!
Luckily my local Argos have them in stock, albeit a tenner more. I won't be giving Currys any more of my business this festive shopping period!

looks like the better option then considering Quidco has been down all day!
Only thing I dont like about TCB is a lot of the time I have to raise a support ticket as my cashback either doesnt get tracked or wrong amount. Plus a lot of their cashback cant be taken out as amazon vouchers!
nomnomnomnom
25 Nov 161#120
Yeah I agree, I prefer Quidco as well. But with it being down and only 1%, TCB does seem the better option.
For good tracking, always use a second browser that's used for nothing else. I use Chrome on a daily basis, but always use IE / Edge with no plugins. I clear all their cookies, close, relaunch it, login and purchase.
It does take an extra minute or so, but it always seems to track fine. One of the main problems with using your normal browser is that it's often littered with cookies from all over the place, which messes up the tracking.
Boony2310
25 Nov 16#121
I'm almost certain that TCB wasnt showing that when I clicked through them and bought this tablet this morning.
Have they just added it at Midday perhaps?
Also, both home delivery and click & collect are both showing as only 1.1%, so not sure what other form of purchase would qualify for the 12.1% ?

A quick look around seems to suggest once it's tripped it's tripped. All depends if the retailer notices and/or cares. The small amount of anecdotal evidence I've found regarding JL is probably not. Reflash to stock and keep quiet. Very grey area it seems. I flashed my Note 8.0 some years back when Knox was first introduced but I'm pretty certain I waited some time to see if there were any issues before doing so.

I'd only root it for a stable Nougat ROM

I'd normally for Greenify, AdAway, Titanium Backup Pro etc. Not so much an issue as this is more of a media device but a decent ad-blocker is a must whatever.

Yes
You can't go wrong with samsung screens especially at this price

Yeah screen is pretty decent, any light bleed/leakage is minimised to small areas top and bottom. Even then unless you like retina bursting brightness you'd be hard pushed to notice in normal light. Currently I've got the brightness set somewhere between 10 and 15% in reasonable lamp lighting and it's perfectly fine for reading/watching.

Also at JL now for the same price and 2 year warranty.
This is listed as having 2 years with the manufacturer, but dealing with JL is so much easier than Currys / Samsung. Not sure if the potential TCB is worth it over JL now.
Bought another for a family member as an Xmas present since they were impressed with it.

I'm in Scotland too and also would've had one to play about with but she wanted to go shopping didn't she, the ten minutes morphed into 2 hours and on the return I had a lovely red card behind the door instead. It won't be till Monday now, damn you Sabbath.
My turn for shopping, 2 minutes it'll take, bin liners, gaffa tape and a chainsaw, sorted! "Hun, you got a minute in the kitchen" Bzzzzzzzzzz

I'm wondering if there were many others like me who were let down by Currys on this one? Ordered on 26th for delivery to store to collect on 28th. Took my money, no further contact from them - then when I finally got through to them today gave some BS excuse, which can be paraphrased as losing control of their stock and they would only process a refund. Given it's high profile advertising of this deal, it's a real **** take.
I know it's thrown around a lot, but it's going to be a while before I give Currys the benefit of the doubt again.

I got let down on a reserve and collection even though they had stock behind the counter. Not for the first time either - I think they get away with it because they are the biggest name of the high street. Got nothing positive from customer services either.

I've used it quite a bit since the purchase and overall I'm fairly happy with it, only real neg I'm finding annoying is the sound, quite low and not the greatest but that aside its a thumbs up.

so presuming yes???
ordered thank you
Be careful, I remember nearly getting caught out by a PCW ipod touch deal a few years ago, ordering only to discover that it was a very cutdown model of the normal one.
Why do I bring this up? Well John Lewis have just refused a price match.
"The item with John Lewis is Qualcomm Snapdragon and the Currys item is Exynos 7870, therefore they are not identical items."
And they're not wrong.
Looking at the PC World business website, they have a slightly different version of this tablet, calling it Samsung Galaxy Tab A (2016)
https://www.pcworldbusiness.co.uk/catalogue/item/P242393P
in addition to this one (without the 2016 suffix and described as having the Samsung processor).
https://www.pcworldbusiness.co.uk/catalogue/item/N168322W?from=category&heat=title
Looks to me as if PCW are pulling a fast one again.
A number of retailers have it listed as (2016), since it wasn't called the Tab A2, thereby avoiding any confusion with the previous 9.7" model.
If you search the mfr numbers from the links you have sent, you will find SM-T580NZWABTU (Qualcomm processor?) refers to the white model and SM-T580NZKABTU (Exynos processor) refers to the black model.
I've asked them to reconsider.
However I didn't buy it for gaming so I'm happy with it. Turn on within seconds and the screen is sharp and bright.
waiting for this to come down!
I have been waiting on a price drop on lenovo tab a10 70 as I don't want to pay more than £150 but reading about this I think its a better tablet
2) Better CS and returns policy.
Don't forget Quidco £10 back on £50 spend.
I've been looking for a good 10" tablet running at least Marshmallow with least 2GB+ ram and 1080p+ (this looks to be better at 16:10) screen. This fits the bill nicely!
Heat added.
how easy is it to cancel/send back to currys if it goes cheaper elsewhere tomorrow?
Can anyone reccomend a good tempered glass screen cover and case for this tablet?
The one posted by the OP is the newer version and is worth the money in my opinion. It is a great piece of kit.
Can someone recommend me somewhere else to keep an eye for this tablet as I believe it will go lower then 159.99 but not by much.

Currys e-giftcard give you 7% off, so order £155 (or £160, multiples of £5) for £144.15, couple that with quidco £10 bonus gives a total of £138.15 for this.
The delivery of the e-giftcard is instant too.
how long does it take to receive eGift card email please? gone 15 minutes still waiting!
did you get the edenred confirmation and worldpay emails? mine came the same time as those
Does this have much over the Tab 3? Thinking it might be time for an upgrade
£11.33 quidco. £137 ish final cost. thanks op and mug51:D
This
sharp graphics, smooth and good sound id recommend it
and
you have the tv player app pre installed that has normal tv channels and 30 premium channels you get a "exclusive free 3 months free trial" when you set up an account .think that has to be redeemed by 31st December this year .
Quidco says 8.8% on all tablet sales - don't know if this applies to R&C, I paid online and paid £3.95 for next day home delivery
Very tempted especially with work discount.
Luckily my local Argos have them in stock, albeit a tenner more. I won't be giving Currys any more of my business this festive shopping period!
Only thing I dont like about TCB is a lot of the time I have to raise a support ticket as my cashback either doesnt get tracked or wrong amount. Plus a lot of their cashback cant be taken out as amazon vouchers!
Have they just added it at Midday perhaps?
Also, both home delivery and click & collect are both showing as only 1.1%, so not sure what other form of purchase would qualify for the 12.1% ?
Picking it up later so will see :innocent:
It's now out of stock for home delivery anyway, coincidence :smirk:
Incidentally my purchase hasn't tracked yet, so if it doesn't at all, I will try and put in a claim for the 12.1%
I'm so close to trying a Chinese tab but I'm worried I'd live to regret it :smirk:
my tablet delivered today! that was super fast. delivered within less than 17 hours of ordering...wow. it is fantastic tablet.
Initial impressions are good, all very responsive. Feels solid but not too heavy. Screen very nice, colours decent. Haven't done a bleed/pixel test yet but can't see any obvious issues. Bloatware is bare minimum you'd expect and even that can be deleted. Useful Microsoft apps, 10 and a bit GB free overall.
Won't root it yet, I usually wait a few weeks just in case of a problem.
Am in currys now and wondering whether to bother if TCB doesn't track lol
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IBHEXHO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_RHhoyb0XT8FFV
£3 discount when purchased together. I've ordered both, if quality isn't good enough then back they go
Just got my via click and collect at currys. Hopefully TCB will track. Nothing on T&Cs to say it won't so fingers crossed
Let's see if my TCB tracks or not . I won't be opening it for a few days

Edit - Have ordered from JL. I'd forgot about the last time I went into Currys/PC World and tried to buy a laptop. They tried to convince me they only had one with a 'recovery USB' available, at a cost of £30 more than listed on the website, see: https://conversation.which.co.uk/technology/currys-pc-world-set-up-service-usb-knowhow-35-laptop/
