A great price for a game changingly fast M.2 NVMe drive. Read speeds over 3,000MB/s and write speeds over 1,700MB/s. Yes, you pay a fair bit more for that speed than you would for a SATA drive, but then you're buying the supercar of SSD drives at a mere sportscar price. (Check that your motherboard or laptop supports the M.2 format.)

Here's a review of the drive (headline: "PC Storage Just Got Sexy") that emphasizes just how ludicrously quick it is:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2016/11/15/samsung-960-evo-m-2-ssd-review-pc-storage-just-got-sexy/#3de2ce609661

And here's another recent review where the drive won an Editor's Choice award:

You are wrong to compare drives by sequential read/write and assume multiplication of performance. This is entirely wrong and didn't reflect on the real world performance. Firstly you need to compare conventional hard drives versus ssds and then compare the ssd technologies. Suffice to say sequential read/write performance is nowhere near as important as latency and 4K random read/write. So that's the conventional versus ssd. Then sata versus NVMe means you need to compare queue depth, NVMe annihilates SATA for queue depth. The next question is can a consumer user saturate the queue depth of NVMe the straight answer is generally they can't.

I disagree, been dealing with them for years and years. Returned 2 motherboards and a graphics card that decided to die on me. They were helpful and replaced all 3 without any fuss.

Not only custom but the SSDs in question are just chips soldered onto the logic board. Not compatible in any meaningful way with m.2 format NVMe drives. Any removable blade drives in Macs are either PCIe AHCI or SATA based AFAIK.

Note quite not sure about the newer ones but you can replace the Late 2013-2015 PCIe SSD. Need to stick with apple though :disappointed:.

4k qd1 is about the same you wouldn't feel a noticeable performance increase unless you have a qd2 or qd4 workload and/or sustained file copy.

Technically Apple do support NVMe SSDs, but only their own custom designed NVMe drives.

Would anyone know if this would work in a Macbook Pro late 2013 a1502?
Thanks
dheydl to Ashton
2 Dec 16 #63
It won't. Apple does not support NVMe drives at all. A third party driver was written for use in the Mac Pro but is very flakey and does not work under Sierra. You need an M.2 PCIe AHCI drive - a specific Samsung SM951 with the right part code seems to work with the appropriate adapter. Try googling for details of the upgrade.

I've got a 256gb Samsung 950 Pro NVME drive in my build & it boots from cold to Windows 10 desktop in under 20 seconds. I don't know if a 'normal' SSD would be as fast but I'm happy with mine.

Do you honestly think that the layman on a non-technical forum understands what "saturating the queue depth" means?
fishmaster
1 Dec 16 #55
To be fair many people even on this non technical deals forum know that sequential read/write is not the most important factor when comparing drives. Latency and 4K random read/write are the measure of performance. Queue depth is less important as most consumer users can't saturate the queue depth with their workload.
Agharta
1 Dec 16 #54
Most people aren't that informed about tech to be frank. Quoting only sequential speeds is like describing a car purely by its top speed and 0-62 figure when clearly even when looking at performance you have to look at handling and breaking.
If you read reviews of SSDs the good ones also look at performance consistency which is also very relevant if you are pushing a drive hard. E.g.

Totally agree, returns and general customers service are a mess. If you need something fixed, be prepared for a hell of slow reply support tickets, bad tempered communication and argumentative staff. I spent thousands with them a few years back, now I avoid there store like the plague.

I still voted hot though, I vote based on the deal value, unfortunately not on the customer support.

Mixed read/write iops, is the most imported thing for a boot drive, the more that can be done the less slow down you will get. pure read/write speeds are only good for large files
Jim988
30 Nov 16 #11
Was considering one of these but its a great deal of money extra only for a read speed improvement. Gonna wait
taras to Jim988
30 Nov 16 #47
1.7GBytes/s write speed = 3x sata

The thing with this is that storage (well the amount on the sdd) no longer becomes a bottleneck. Upshot is also that larger page files start to become useful

Interesting. Why then are sequential read and write speeds the spec people generally refer to when discussing disk speeds if it's irrelevant? Why aren't 4K or latency speeds the spec people quote?

My above post was in reference to zangetsu19's post, but since I'm using my phone to post, the quotation function appears not to have worked maybe I screwed it up. Anyway my post was not a direct response or in fact a response to the description posted by the OP.

Over double the price of a similarly sized SATA drive. These are largely pointless in a desktop system unless you have a very specific need for high bandwidth.

The money you save getting a normal SATA drive would be better spent on any other component rather than this.
zangetsu19 to Minstadave
30 Nov 16 #34
depends, if your getting this you ain't to worried about money you just want a kick ass pc,
Also you notice the difference between HD and SSD, so you would notice difference with this.

HD 50-75mb
SSD 500-600
M.2 3k
Each is 6 ish times faster than the other,

would you notice it in games yeh and no, my friend has the pro and he loads about 15 seconds faster into games in bf4 (ssd 950pro here).but thats all you would notice.

so if your on a budget then i totally agree that you can spend it in better places.

dont amazon have this at the same price?

If you want to use it as a Boot drive then your system firmware has to support booting from an NVMe drive in a PCIe slot with an adaptor which most don't allow.

Quick question about these M.2's - WHY?

Can you really notice a difference between this and say an 850 SATA III drive?

Also curious about this, would I notice any "real world" performance difference between this and my current Samsung 850 Evo sata 3 SSD... let me rephrase that, would I notice enough to justify the cost of this upgrade incl. buying a new board to support pcie 3.0x4 nvme. Now I heard there are boards with 2 or 3 slots to raid these drives.
Agharta to johnthehuman
30 Nov 16 #22
Not with most consumer workloads except for copying/moving files.
They give very poor performance per £ unless you use some very demanding software.
So a waste of money for most people.

I have a MacBook Pro retina 2016 with 3200 read speed and 2300 write speed according to Crystaldiskmark. Subjectively I haven't noted it to boot super fast, and GTA V still takes ages to load, not a huge difference over PS3. However, I was able to install Windows 10 on bootcamp in a matter of minutes.
Agharta
30 Nov 16 #23
... which is not significantly faster than a half decent SATA SSD for most consumer workloads which cost less than half the price .
It does change the game in terms of being very poor value though if you aren't able to access the extra raw performance.

Is 'changingly' an English word? Of course not, the OP is just being makeupedly.
Genki to othen
30 Nov 16 #20
The expression "game changingly" is used on over 8,000 sites, including in newspaper articles, books etc. It's not in common use, granted, but since English evolves over time based on usage, it's not "wrong" either.

It's true, however, that I would have been better off hyphenating it.
s1m0n1980
30 Nov 16 #18
I have the 256GB version and it's fast, if you generally use your PC you won't see a great difference in speed over ssd but if you do gaming or video editing etc you see the difference.
johnthehuman
30 Nov 16 #16
Not sure why you'd want 3,000MB/s+ read speed. Realistically is e-peen waggling at it's worst.

ANY SSD (even the cheapest Sandisk or Crucial) will give you benefits far and beyond your wildest dreams* compared to an old fashioned spinning HDD. Short of some pretty heavy enterprise data work, I can't imagine justifying the cost of a new mobo plus one of these.

*(not quite)

Just going by the review posted by the OP, then no, you won’t see much performance increase compared to the premium price. Look at page 5 of the Techreport review, most scores are so close you wouldn't noticed a blind bit of difference.
