Edit - actually scrap that it doesn't look like a great drive. Probably why it's cheap. :disappointed:

Does anybody know if it is a 7200RPM drive in there or just a 5400?

Yes this will work.
Any USB 3.0 hard drive will be fine.

Or alternatively just delete the installed files of games not currently being played much. Can always re-install/re-download later (for free). That's what I do for my PS4 with a 500GB drive. Can have 8-10 games fully installed no problem.

i have the 2GB version of this. not only does it add space, but games load alot faster off it too. When you get it move all games onto it and set it as the default location for installing/downloading data.

Cheers buddy. That's what I'm cautious about - I don't want to buy it and open it only to find it's unsuitable. I have no use for external drives when I've still got a bunch of bays left in my machine! I can afford to hang fire though as I don't really need another one just yet

Can you whip the drive out and use it internally? Internal 4Tb drives seem to be going for £120+

I would have thought so, found an internal image of the 3TB D3 which is just a sata Seagate Barracuda disk within an enclosure. Guess the worry is you've got no idea what's actually inside the box till you've opened it up (rpm, cache etc) and no warranty.
Some new internal HDDs on Fleabay for less than £100 see item# 201721055340 and 162282839961

Yes. The advantage with this particular case design is that you can open them without breaking any of the lugs. So it would be possible to re-assemble without anyone knowing it had been opened. The drives inside the ones I bought last year were Seagate ST4000DM000-1F2168.

Might need a bit of lube but I'm sure it's possible
