You can run this from a USB socket on your TV which is what I am doing.
I would recommend this over a nowtv 2 if you are planning to use more than normal tv apps and now tv this does Netflix plex and other apps unlike the now tv which does not; however if you are going wired internet the now tv box is your best bet for price.
You can't watch terrestrial tele through this natively there may be an app but I didn't check as I have my TV for that.

I've just come off Roku on-line chat as I hadn't received my code. I was told that it had been escalated to their 'Concern' team! I've just taken another look at this promotions wording and it says:

I'm sure there must be some false advertising going on here? I doubt there are many people still looking at this thread but if anyone happens to have received a code from Roku and used it are you able to give a rough idea on the number of films you were able to select from and whether there is a particular link to those films given when you received your code? Also, whether the code needs to be used 3 times or if you need to choose your 3 films in one single 'purchase'?

I didn't have my code after 6 days so I did a web-chat with a rep on the Roku site and they gave me the code there and then.

Not sure if it's been mentioned before but Curry's are selling this for 17.99 with free delivery. Really tempted at that price and for the 3 free films, but I already own a Chromecast. Is there anything the Roku does that the Chromecast can't?

I bought one of these as the price was really good.... it seems really slow and pretty unresponsive, that's with the netflix app and youtube... I'm used to use the Amazon tv stick and now tv box which are both very very spritely in comparison.

A lot of the films on the page aren't HD, and the code I have doesn't work on those.

It works when you try it on one that has HD stated on the top corner of the film, but if you try it on any without HD the code says invalid?

So it's even less titles to choose from, this is seeming like a bit of a con. Doesn't make sense, why even show the non HD titles on that page if you can't redeem them?

Depends on your needs, I think the Fire stick is more versatile than this, but I personally prefer this.

That movie list doesn't include Captain America: Civil War - can anyone confirm this on their Roku?

They must have changed the need to register card details, as I signed up for my account without registering a payment option. I set up my Netflix account and amazon video etc no problem, and all worked fine without the need to register anything payment wise at roku.
They did say in the terms for the 3 free movie offer that you had to register a payment option, so did that for the offer by registering my PayPal. They do also have paid for services etc via roku so you would have to register a payment to use them.

I like the fact I have my now TV, netfix and amazon video all in one place (unlike my old fire stick), plus there are some private IPTV channels which offer UK/US streaming TV and on demand free movies.

I own one of these sticks but a couple of warnings for those that want this, it REQUIRES your debit/credit card information just to use it... and it's incredibly slow, even slower than the Amazon fire stick which I owned at one point and thought was slow, the youtube app stutters and lags like crazy but once you finally play video it's fine.

I'd highly recommend the fire stick over this if your intent on getting a media stick, it's faster and doesn't require your card info.

There are quite a lot actually, I don't think any are the most recent releases but there seems to be a wide range of ages from the old 'The Wizard of Oz' and possibly older films through to 'The Intern'. I am not at home now but remember those two showed up.

I just bought one of these and had problems setting it up, wouldn't see my extender so i moved the bedroom TV closer and still wouldn't connect. I got an error code 014.

Chromecast is more to send content from a Browser / Android device to a big screen, you find a source on the device then get the device to hand the details of the video stream over to the Chromecast and it will then show it independently of the phone / tablet/ PC.

Roku/Firestick / Now TV are self contained media players, You find and select the content all in the device (usually called channels).

As an example to watch iPlayer on a chrome case you find the app on your phone, then find the show on the phone, start it playing and then the App can offer to let you then send the video stream details to the Chromecast that will then display it on your TV. On the Roku you choose the channel on the TV, then select, find and play the content all within the same device.

As for the stick, I have had it for a few days now and I'm pleased with it. Bit laggier than the Fire TV stick, but I only really needed it to play Netflix on a TV as it won't work through my PC due to HD content protection. It works very well with Plex - less so with iPlayer.

I use it to watch a couple of paid for TV services, NowTV and Amazon Prime Video. You can also watch Netflix if you have a subscription to that. There are free services, such as BBC iPlayer, Channel 4s offering (All 4 or whatever it is called), ITV Player and Channel 5 - you just need a WiFi connection that is fast enough.

It does have universal search, though I believe Google already have something similar in the US which will presumably come to the UK eventually.

I didn't find Roku's version to work reliably, the search was fine but trying to play just sent me to the home page of the app, making it a bit pointless if I have to search again to play it.

Speed wise I think it feels faster than the NowTV v1, but slower than v2. The only thing I feel it is missing at the moment is UKTV Play.

I moved the wifi extender into our bedroom and it works a treat now but still can't pick up the main router from downstairs. Maybe it's because it's directly behind the TV and then next to a wall.

Anyway nice to have access to all of the catch up, Amazon Video, Now TV, Netflix and Plex all in place in one tidy package. Seems a little slow navigating even in comparison to the standard Now TV box bit its only £19 so hey ho.

Still no 3 free films but just had an email from Wuaki to get my first film for 99p!

The 1400 channels are apps within the Roku store, some are things like iPlayer and ITV Hub, others are the likes of YouTube and Spotify, there are also lots of useless ones on there.

If you want to use it as an alternative to Freeview, without having to run an aerial cable, you will want to install the unofficial FilmOn channel (the 6th November update has a link to add it to your Roku box), it doesn't have all Freeview channels (no Dave for instance) but it does have a large selection to watch.

I also recommend installing TuneIn from the Roku store, it has a lot of DAB radio stations in it which you can stream as well.

If you don't mind my saying it, if I were in your shoes and budget wasn't too limiting, I'd buy the Seiki 32 inch LCD for them - £99 delivered at Currys. This has composite, start and component connections so most legacy stuff is covered as well.

Noob question, how different is this to chromecast .... i have Amazon Prime trial and was watching the Grand tour tonight however i couldn't cast from my phone as my phone doesnt support amazon video and my laptop could only mirror using chromes extension but the stream quality was poor .... tried watching it on xbox Amazon app but again the quality was really poor although im on 62mbps.

I don't really want to pay £20 out for something i pretty much already have if it requires a smartphone to control everything my smartphone isn't really smart because it cost £20 lol vodafone smart 6 only used for android apps.

(I have chrome cast v1 + V2 which is pretty much the same as v1 except different shape lol)

I recently sold my Amazon Fire Stick for one of these - I don't use Kodi, and there is plenty on Amazon, Netflix and Now TV to keep the family entertained. I don't find navigation any slower than the Fire Stick. Plex actually seems to run better on the Roku too.

The closest competitor is the Amazon Fire stick. I have a Roku 3 puck and use the remote earphone facility quite a lot. On getting a Fire stick for a 2nd TV, I thought no chance of that. But in fact the Fire has very workable Bluetooth, pair of cheap Bluetooth earphones and solved (lip sync issue if any, not really noticeable). I guess this Roku stick does not have Bluetooth?

NB. these devices can suffer from interference from certain TV's...
If you find that you have a strong Wifi signal but streaming is 'choppy' and constantly buffers, I strongly suggest you purchase a HDMI extension cable or use a HDMI switcher to put some distance between the TV & the stick.

Short answer is that Kodi ican not (ever) be supported on Roku is because Kodi is a native C/C++ application and Roku does does not support (or rather allow) native C/C++ applications. Roku's SDK only support script applications that are written in Roku's own BrightScript language.

Reason that Kodi can run on Android is that Google provide an NDK (Native Development Kit) for Android. The Android NDK is a toolset that allows you to implement parts of your app using native-code languages such as C and C++.

I have Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, and this Roku. All three have their own advantages and disadvantages and there is definitely not one clear winner. But unless you use Amazon Video PLUS another service, I wouldn't bother with the Roku Stick unless price dictates you must. It feels positively antique compared to the other two devices, iPlayer in particular is so slow as to be barely usable. It does have Amazon Video, but it looks and feels like it belongs in a different decade.

If I had to pick just one I'd actually get a Chromecast and cast screen to watch Amazon Video instead.

Roku 1 has AV outs. Last time I looked thru were £18 cex + £2.50 P&P with 2 year warranty.

iPlayer, itv, C4, Five, Netflix and Prime. Realistically, are there any others worth watching? As others have said, like sky and virgin, there are loads of channels but after a week you go back to those few.

I'm confused by all these sticks. I have a fire stick at the moment as have amazon prime. Was looking at the new Now tv box as it can pause and rewind. Can anyone tell me what's best? Stick with fire stick (jailbreak with kodi??), get the roku or the new now tv box? Thanks

Is there something like this that you can get Google play store on? I want to be able to access sky q on a TV using a stick as there is nowhere to sit a box. I was hoping my fire sick could do this but unfortunately not.

Yes, it has hundreds of channels but a lot of them are garbage. Even the secret channels aren't that interesting in my opinion.

Amazon price match is PRIME ONLY ... so they can get lost and I'll get it from Argos thanks ... even if I have to wait a few days as no local stock - but wouldn't you think they might have got some stock in? ... would hardly take up any space - LOL

If possible better to power of a spare USB port on the TV than keep in the mains, then at least it only "warms" up when in use as it powers with the TV.

Navigating can be a little bit laggy however the quality of streaming is decent. The stick does seem to get very hot though, so I'm not convinced about the long term durability. £19.99 is a decent price though to pimp up your "dumb" HD TV.

I think only the NowTV Version1 (or the Roku 2400/2500 that the NowTV box is based on) have AV out, there may be some stock in stores but it will be a very sporadic as to what's left in any given store.

For £10 to £15 you can get a HDMI to SCART adapter, eg this one on Amazon but like most of the cheaper devices quality and performance may vary. Its probably not going to be as sharp as a HDMI connecter at this price point, and you also need another plug socket to power it, although some are USB powered so you could get a double output mains to USB plug to power both the Roku and the Adapter.

Is there anyway of using this on an old tv (ie no HDMI, just those old yellow, red, white connections or scart ?) I know the old Now tv box could do it, (not the new one).

In practical day to day terms there little difference performance wise, a lot of the performance issues are usually down to the network connection either your internal wi-fi or the broadband speed. The NowTV box will be cheaper as its subsidised by Sky, however the nowTV box is also more locked down, you may be able to add one channel by side loading that channel in developer mode to the NowTV box , but not all Roku channels can be found online, and only adding one may be a limit for you.

The NowTv App store is also more controlled so for example you won't get Amazon TV or Netflix as NowTv want you to buy Sky Entertainment / Movies. This is common elsewhere, I used to have a NowTv box, then a Chromecast, now use a Firestick, why so many, because I have Amazon prime, and Amazon wants you on their platforms so you are spending money in their store, and I didn't want the hassle of updating the chromecast with the latest workarounds.

The Roku store is more independent so there more channels to choose from, and yes you can put NowTV on if you want.

I currently have Nowtv, Netflix, Spotify, plex, youtube, google play, amazon prime and wuaki all ruuning off my older Roku 3 so I imagine this will have the same content. you can also choose from loads of other apps ie TED talks etc.

Banshee is on Sky , it was on Nowtv for a while (all 4 series) but is not on the Nowtv list anymore - it will probably reappear sometime in the future.

maybe silly question but if tv has Ethernet can this use it instead of WiFi ?
