I've tried a trial of all. Torguard seemed good. Pia vpn always worked for me but I thought torrents were slow. Ibvpn seems quite fast for me. Need to try airvpn but heard good things. Waiting g for black Friday offers. I would stay away from stackssocials lifetime offers the companies rank below top 5 in list of vpns

Does anyone have personal experience with VPN Unlimited or VPN Forever??

https://stacksocial.com/sales/vpn-unlimited-lifetime-subscription
https://stacksocial.com/sales/vpn-forever-lifetime-subscription?aid=a-acj1xxje

They seems to be offering a Lifetime Subscription deal for $29, which does seem awfully low priced for the promise of lifetime VPN services for up to 5 devices.

Had good service from pia, connection seems pretty stable.

I like the PC client as it provides some useful features like internet killswitch, other clients might do that now.

If your really worried about logging they do accept payment via US gift cards but it does cost more.

What's wrong with CyberGhost? I got the year as part of the Lifehacker Humble Bundle deal and it seems to do exactly what's asked of it - gets good reviews and comes out cheaper than these ones?

I was about to say the main reason anyone should want a vpn is security over open networks, don't know why no one else has mentioned this. I've spent the last 2 years travelling and wouldn't want to not have one, PIA worked well for me including china which is a pita, dubai was only place it wouldn't work. Using seed4me at the mo because I got a free trial.

i need to get a VPN, ive used torrent sites but sky have blocked them, im not a massive downloader by any means. my concern is setting it up as i managed to set up my cctv cameras to see it outside my network and i dont want to mess that up so i cant see the house while im at work etc.

If you are looking to get a VPN because you think the government is interested in your favorite flavour of porn, please think again. Do you think the government care and/or have the manpower to trawl through the Petabytes of perverted material we go through on a daily basis?! And for what benefit?! (other than to add to their own collection).

Torrents work fine and they also offer a SOCKS5 proxy if anyone wants to configure their client to connect via that.

If you're looking to use a VPN to do bad things online, this probably isn't the website to be doing your research on VPN's. Also, please get a hobby.

If you're looking for a VPN because you're concerned about cyber security, online threats or are using unsecured public networks, this is a great solution. Actually, it's probably a good solution for all of the above, however I don't care if the government monitor my fetish of the month and I don't do bad things online. There's a PIA mobile app that comes in handy if you're connecting to public Wi-Fi, since they tend to be about as trustworthy as my ex.

The loads on the VPN peer points do vary, e.g. Southampton has a smaller capacity than London so sometimes it might be worth trying an alternative if one seems slower than the other. Times of day, distance etc. will all make a difference but personally I've never had a major issue. I have had problems trying to access certain US video streaming services (such as Netflix), known IP ranges tend to get blocked because VPN's are a pretty common way of avoiding country restrictions. Anyhoo... voted hot from me.

Probably safe enough in the uk tbh. A proxy will hide your ip address and protect you from having your ip address reported, but won't encrypt your traffic. If you were torrenting a lot of stuff or didn't want your isp to see your traffic for whatever reason then you might want to use a VPN. ISPs won't generally bust you for torrenting unless a copyright holder reports your IP.

I've used this service. It's decent. You can use the US server to watch US Netflix, works on Windows, Linux, Mac, Android (I don't know about ios). The installation is very simple - bit more niggly on Linux, but what isn't? note that when running, it was a huge drain on my phone battery.

Great for torrenting. I didn't notice more than a 10% drop in speeds either way.

I have tested this provider before, here is my lowdown.

Example speed on their German VPN peering point:-
http://www.speedtest.net/result/5797643676.png

Example Sweden VPN peering point:-
http://www.speedtest.net/result/5797673170.png

Example Southampton UK VPN peering point:-
http://www.speedtest.net/result/5797660622.png

Positives
Fast, just look at the speed test
Cheap... very cheap...
Lots of peering points all over the world
Lets you VPN a single port (good if you run a public server on your VPN to stop DOS attacks on your real IP)
Good security options in the Windows client if your ultra paranoid
Client regularly updated

Negatives
ALOT and I mean ALOT of their IP address range is banned on sites like twitch.tv
ALOT and I mean ALOT of their IP address range cause you to get a cloudflare captula on websites (including HUKD)
Tends to stop responding about 01:30 in the morning, you have to manually reconnect

For £29.48 its a great deal. Have some heat!

Regards
Flea

I just finished a year of this service. The iPad app struggled to connect whilst abroad and recently unable to access iplayer and Netflix abroad so useless for what I need.
anthony69
14 Nov 16 1 #68
Your internet provider would only see you going to the VPN server, nothing else. All your traffic between the server and you is then encrypted, so they could not see what is was you were accessing or the sites you were visiting through the VPN. Even inspecting the data would be useless because it is encrypted.

Yes, they're very interested. Because for a huge percentage of people, if they have your internet history, they have you by the balls. And you may think "Well, I'm nobody important" - you might not be today but tomorrow you might find yourself in the middle of something of interest to the Government and they may find it necessary to destroy you in the eyes of the public. You might think that paranoid but here's cuddly Tony's government doing exactly that sort of thing to someone whose only "offence" was to be involved in a train crash:

Depends what you're using Kodi for. If you're just streaming, it's highly unlikely that you need a VPN unless your ISP was actually looking at your internet traffic. If you're using any torrent add-ons then yeah, a VPN is probably a good idea. Even then though, you'll probably just get a letter telling you to stop on your first few strikes. If you get a letter, get a VPN.

Amongst other things it allows you to access websites blocked by an isp, like torrent sites.

It also hides what you do online if you are worried about isp's being legally obliged to log what you do.

We do not store logs relating to traffic, session, DNS or metadata. In other words, we do not log, period. Privacy is our policy.

14 Nov 16 2 #44
Indeed. PIA are on the 'absolutely not' list on almost every forum I visit, apart from the lesser tech based ones.

Being based in the US means they can be told to start logging, can't talk about it, and even have to offer the service claiming they're still not logging.

You have no privacy with a VPN like PIA as they're based in the US. You are doing little more than changing your IP address.

With so many other good providers out there, I do have to wonder why people bother with PIA. Maybe it's the friendly website and convincing claims of security.

US law is very clear: If a request to log user data is made, they have to log it without telling anyone. If you think "we do not log" has any weight behind it, you're mistaken I'm afraid.

We've been here before though: Hide My Ass - a UK based VPN passing details to the FBI. If they have that reach over UK-US borders, then you can be sure they have way more control in the US.

I don't really care how much it costs as long as it reliably allows me to do what I want to do. To me a provider that doesn't allow me to overcome geo locked services is money wasted however little they charge me.

it's more with hiding the browsing history snd downloads

MonkeysUncle
13 Nov 16 #39
I'm with pia, its really fast for me, keeps up with my Usenet downloads on fibre. They also got rid of their Russian vpn server a good few months ago due to security risks there.
Most folks don't need **** amounts of security, and if say you were logged into somewhere which requires a login they don't just log your i.p address they usually log mac address etc. And your internet provider always logs what you do, mac address etc. Then you'd also have to have signed up anonymously and never logged in anywhere out of vpn, etc etc.

So in effect VPN is a bit pointless for security, its much better to buy payg sim card data bundles in cash etc. Same as its always been.

13 Nov 16 3 #37
I have used PIA for the last 2 years and I’m happy with the service.
As too the government spying on its citizens:
The Investigatory Powers Bill will force service providers to store browsing records for 12 months.
Service providers, such as BT or Sky, will be required to store the internet connection records - what services a device connects to - for everyone in the UK for a year so that police can access them.
The UK has more surveillance cameras than the rest of Europe; we are the most surveilled citizens in the world.

And no I do not wear a tinfoil hat

I live in Vietnam and I have no problem accessing BBC iplayer on airvpn.org It works far better on a Mac than a PC. If you use a PC there is a serious learning curve. I am not computer literate and I figured it out but as soon as I switched to a Mac it worked far better, no resetting of the network adapters every time I stopped using the vpn. Speeds are good and they take pride in defeating geo services. No logs and no cookies.
